Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Spike Lee joins the countdown here with his magnum opus entitled 'Do the Right Thing'. What is the name of the character Lee plays in this, perhaps his greatest film?

Answer: Mookie

'Do the Right Thing' is a many layered look at the issues of race relations in Brooklyn's toughest neighborhood. Under Lee's excellent direction an all-star cast, including John Turturro, Danny Aiello, Rosie Perez, Samuel Jackson, Ossie Davis, Rosie Dee and several other notables, really propels this film into the upper stratosphere.
2. 'The Killer', starring Chow Yun Fat, is the name of one of the most intensely striking films from which Asian director's marvelous oeuvre?

Answer: John Woo

'The Killer' (or 'Die Xue Shuang Xiong' in Mandarin -- 'Bloodshed of Two Heros') is the greatest, among several, Hong Kong-based collaborations between director John Woo and actor Chow Yun Fat, both of whom have 'graduated' to Hollywood cinema. Beyond the showers of bullets and the sometimes cheesy dialogue, this film deals deftly with fascinating themes of loyalty, friendship and honor. Please have a look at this one!
3. One of Jim Jarmusch's most interesting and provocative films, this one tells three stories. Ones about two Japanese teen worshippers of Elvis who visit Memphis for the first time, another is about an Italian woman unexpectedly marooned in that same town and the last is about three men (also in Memphis) who get themselves in trouble after one shoots a liquor store owner. Together, these vignettes combine to form what film?

Answer: Mystery Train

Sounds strange? Indeed it is! This should not deter you from watching this fun-filled film, replete with interesting dialogue and imagery. Actors such as Steve Buscemi, Nicoletta Braschi and Clash frontman Joe Strummer star in this charming flick.
4. Director Steven Soderbergh's feature length film debut was a doozy. Starring Andie MacDowell and James Spader, what was the title of this cinematic foray into voyeurism?

Answer: Sex, Lies and Videotape

Andie MacDowell plays a woman married to a man who is having an affair, with her sister no less! Andie meets the James Spader character, whose project is to videotape women who describe their sex lives, and eventually falls for him. 'Sex, Lies and Videtape' is considered to among the most influential independent films of the modern era.
5. Create the image in your mind of an all-black regiment formed for the eventual purpose of engaging in action during the American Civil War. Imagine Matthew Broderick as the unit's commander and Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman as soldiers within the regiment. What movie have you conjured up the makings of in your brain?

Answer: Glory

'Glory' is the true-to-life story of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, under the command of Robert Gould Shaw (Broderick in the film). Denzel Washington won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in this fabulous film.
6. One of the most successful films based on a comic book in Hollywood history, 1989's 'Batman' was groundbreaking for its dark tones and epic imagery. Who was the director behind this modern masterpiece?

Answer: Tim Burton

In this first major film adaptation of 'Batman', Michael Keaton dons the mask of the caped crusader. Kim Basinger plays the lady love of Bruce Wayne, Batman's alter ego. Oh yes, and Jack Nicholson steals the show as the comically villainous Joker.
7. How many girls named Heather can one high school have? Apparently, quite a number according to the quirky 1989 black comedy 'Heathers', starring Christian Slater and Winona Ryder. Speaking of Winona, her name in the film, oddly enough, is not Heather, but rather what?

Answer: Veronica

The Heathers are as follows: Heather Duke (Shannen Doherty), Heather McNamara (Lisanne Falk) and Heather Chandler (Kim Walker). Winona is Veronica, certainly part of the 'Heathers' club, but unfortunately named Veronica. Christian Slater plays the delightfully homicidal J.D., Veronica's wayward beau.
8. 'Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure', one of the best films of 1989? No way! Yes way, I say! Not only does it feature colorfully comical dialogue, it has a clever plot, interesting characters and a brilliant gimmick. Which of these actors does not appear in this now-classic comedy gem?

Answer: Kevin Bacon

Oddly enough (or not oddly, if you happen not to be a fan), this film almost never saw the light of day. Filmed in 1987, it was not given theatrical release until 1989 due to the bankruptcy of the film's distributor. That aside, 'Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure' became an anthem for an entire generation of slackers who had nothing better to do than form bands, woo girls (or boys) and carve their way down totally excellent waterslides.
9. Tom Cruise became a credible actor with his appearance in the 1989 classic Vietnam War-themed film 'Born on the Fourth of July'. Which generous director provided Cruise with this chance to shine?

Answer: Oliver Stone

'Born on the Fourth of July' was the second installment in Oliver Stone's trilogy of films about Vietnam (the others being 'Platoon' and 'Heaven and Earth'). It was based on the autobiography of Ron Kovic, an American veteran who was paralyzed during his tour of duty in Vietnam. Stone won his second directing Oscar for this film, but Cruise failed to bring home Oscar gold for his fairly decent acting job.
10. Here's another directorial debut, this one by Cameron Crowe. He tells the story of Lloyd Dobler, an average high school student who suddenly decides to pitch woo with the class valedictorian, namely Diane Court. What is the title of this anthemic late-80s film?

Answer: Say Anything

'Say Anything' featured the acting of John Cusack and Ione Skye. One of its most memorable scenes comes when Lloyd and Diane's relationship has broken down, and Lloyd decides to stand outside Diane's window holding a boombox which plays the Peter Gabriel song 'In Your Eyes'. Quite the image!
