Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to Grandpa Seth, what is the goblins' favourite food?

Answer: Half-man, half-plant

The film opens with a grandfather, 'Grandpa Seth', telling a story to his grandson, Joshua. The tale, about a young man named Peter who walks through a forest of cruel, deformed goblins whose modus operandi involves not needing to justify evil deeds, takes a turn for the worse when Peter comes across a seductive young woman who makes him drink an unnatural, green substance that turns him into a plant (and allows him to sweat chlorophyll green). She reveals herself to be a goblin, of course, and the creatures feast on their prey.

Joshua is shocked to find from his grandfather that goblins still exist and prey on the innocence with "a veracity unequal to anything on Earth." It is at this point that Joshua's mother turns on the light to find her son still awake. When he says that his grandfather was just telling him a story, the camera pans out to show that there's no one there. Grandpa Seth has been dead for six months!

To add insult to injury, Grandpa Seth is reading from a book called 'Davy and the Goblins', so there's that too.
2. What is the name of Holly's boyfriend (or, as her father says, 'her beau')?

Answer: Elliot

Joshua's mother tells him to go to bed since they're all getting a month-long rest in the country starting the very next day. His sister, Holly, stays up while his parents head to bed eager to live in a country town but also worried that poor Joshua's delusions are too serious to ignore. Joshua's father, Michael, says not to worry because he too had an imaginary friend when he was younger.

Holly is visited in the night by her boyfriend, Elliot, who climbs in through her bedroom window and learns of her trip to the country. With his three best friends close behind, he manages to invite himself along to an extent; they'll be following along in a camper. It's a shame her family hates him so much-- almost as much as she hates his friends (because friends would make him a virgin for life). She decides to tell her father that he's coming along on the trip but she's disappointed when he gives her an absolute no...and Elliot doesn't show anyways. She spends the drive moping in the back seat.
3. What is the name of the town in which Joshua and his family battle the goblins of the film?

Answer: Nilbog

On the drive to Nilbog, Joshua falls asleep and has a nightmare that he is turning into a half-human, half-plant creature for goblin food. When he awakens he believes that he can see Grandpa Seth outside holding up a sign that reads 'Stop Them!' When they stop the car he tries to speak to his grandfather but only receives cryptic warnings about their destination.

Elliot and his buddies head to Nilbog as well after he convinces them that the town is full of beautiful girls. They park their camper in a vacant lot next to the woods.

When the Waits family arrives at the house they'll be staying at, they don't think anything of the fact that the town is deserted. The deal is that they trade places with a family from the country, swapping houses with them for a month (which, when you think about it, seems senselessly complicated...but this movie isn't based on logic). Oddly ecstatic, the Waits survey the property and Joshua notices unique moles on each of the family members they're trading with before they leave. As the other family's truck pulls away, the youngest member tosses Joshua a baseball; scrawled on the side in chlorophyll green are the words 'eat before we eat you'. This seems like they type of evidence one would use to alert the family and get away. No such thing happens. Joshua simply tosses it aside.
4. From where did Creedence's ancestors hail?

Answer: Stonehenge

The Waits head inside and Joshua's mother says that she's "willing to bet they left something behind" to eat. Sure enough, genuine country hospitality is found on the dining room table in the form of an entire welcome meal; only Joshua notices a slight green tinge to all the food (including green butter spread liberally on the corn). The family decides to dig in, but Joshua heads to the window to find Grandpa Seth beckoning him aside. Seth tells them not to eat the food or they'll turn into chlorophyll-green, half-human, half-plant hybrids for the goblins to eat. To stop them, Grandpa Seth freezes time for thirty seconds and Joshua urinates on the dinner table. Seriously.

Unsurprisingly, this stunt does not go over well. The family assumes he's acting out and his father, who starts taking off his belt (but instead tightens it to avoid hunger pangs), says that they'll all need to go without food.

At the camper, the guys hang around and one of them, Arnold, heads outside for a smoke only to find a scantily-clad woman running for her life in the forest. He decides to help her by following her-- this is something she doesn't notice until he tackles her. She's amazed that he's human and she says that they made her eat "that stuff".

When the goblins appear with their weapons (and toss a spear through his shoulder) Arnold and the mystery woman flee through the woods to a church-like structure (which they mistake for a house). Inside they meet a woman named Creedence Leonore Gielgud (of ancient druid origins) who greets them in an eccentric manner, allows them to stay, and forces Arnold to drink a mysterious, smoking brew (which looks to be dry ice more than the miracle cure he needs). The brew, Creedence claims, is a mix of all the 'vegetal properties' of the Earth and is made of sap. This doesn't help the mystery woman who promptly vomits chlorophyll green and proceeds upstairs to be eaten by waiting goblins. Arnold, watching worriedly downstairs, finds himself unable to move and exclaims "They're eating her...and then they're going to eat me."

This alone is worth the price of admission.
5. Which of these products seems to be the only thing for sale at the general store?

Answer: Milk

Joshua continues to dislike living in Nilbog, but more mysteriously, Grandpa Seth appears to his sister, Holly, while she dances in front of the mirror (having mistaken her room for Joshua's...as spirits are wont to do). When the family finally checks the mirror they don't find anything of importance. Joshua later calls upon Seth when they leave and he's told to get the family away since they're in the kingdom of the goblins. Joshua asks him to tell his parents but Grandpa Seth is afraid that they won't listen.

Out at the trailer, Drew decides to take a run into town for some supplies but he's stopped by a local cop. The cop offers him a drive and a sandwich and Drew accepts both before getting dropped off at the general store. He receives some Nilbog Milk and is encouraged to let his friends have some too, especially since there's nothing else in the store-- everyone in Nilbog is allegedly a vegetarian.

Drew is told to visit the house that looks like an old church to meet with Arnold, so that's his next destination. At this point, Drew is feeling woozy from the sandwich and Arnold has been transformed into a half-human, half-plant creature. Creedence makes her exit when she decides to visit the Waits with a tainted welcome pudding made with wild nettles. When she returns she finds that Drew has arrived and attempted to free Arnold. Creedence kills them both; Arnold is chopped down with a chainsaw (which actually appears to tickle him) and fed to Drew in a shake.
6. All of the goblins have moles on their faces in the shape of which of these?

Answer: Four-leaf clover

Creedence enters the Waits' new place without being asked and offers her welcome pudding. When Holly comes downstairs to say that she's going for a walk, Creedence accidentally calls her both "appetizing" and "provocative".

Joshua and his father, meanwhile, head to Nilbog to buy some supplies as well since all they have in the house is rancid Nilbog Milk. When they reach the general store, the town has headed to a sermon so they wait outside. Joshua soon discovers (with the help of a reflection of the town sign) that 'Nilbog', the name of the town, is actually 'Goblin' spelled backwards!

Shocker, eh?!

Unfortunately, Joshua's dad falls asleep so Joshua hops onto his skateboard to investigate the sermon. When he hides on the second floor he witnesses the goblins discussing ways of eating the Waits family. He also finds the family that they swapped houses with in the crowd. Joshua is found and nearly forced to eat tainted ice cream but his father steps in at the last second to save him. He tries to tell his father that they're all goblins; he can tell since they have clover leaf moles on their faces.

On the way home, Holly and Elliot argue at the trailer before her father picks them up and brings them along to the house.
7. What weapon does Grandpa Seth present to Joshua to fight off the goblins?

Answer: A molotov cocktail

When Joshua, Holly, Elliot, and Mr. Waits arrive at the farmhouse they find that the residents of Nilbog (including those at the sermon) have arrived to show off genuine country hospitality with a feast. Joshua is sent to his room for claiming that everyone is a goblin and when he tries to talk with Grandpa Seth in the mirror he's shocked to find a goblin in the reflection generated by none other than Creedence. Grandpa Seth cuts the goblin's hand off with an axe which, in turn, cuts off Creedence's hand. She uses 'Stonehenge, Magic Stone' to heal herself in an instant while Seth presents a molotov cocktail he'd been saving.

When Joshua and Grandpa Seth head outside they're stopped by the preacher of Nilbog who tells Seth to go back to his kingdom of shadows and uses magic to incapacitate him. In a brief lapse, Seth is able to call upon a lightning strike to spark the molotov cocktail and set the goblin on fire. When everyone rushes outside to investigate, the Waits family finally discovers the truth; everyone in Nilbog is a goblin!

It's about time.
8. How does the Waits family ultimately contact Grandpa Seth?

Answer: Through a seance

The Waits family (and Elliot) races back inside the house and holes up inside. The goblins threaten to kill them violently if they don't come out willingly or turn themselves into half-human, half-plant creatures by eating Nilbog food. When Holly suggests that they perform a seance to contact Grandpa Seth, Joshua insists upon the genius idea.

Creedence seeks strength from Stonehenge, Magic Stone and day abruptly turns to night. Creedence is instantly transformed from a spinster into a seductive witch and decides to use these powers to her advantage. She decides to stalk Brent in the trailer by appearing on his television set and encouraging him to come outside to meet her and share a cob of corn. When they retire to the trailer, she buries him in popcorn.

Really.

When the family sets dozens of candles up on the kitchen table they are finally able to call upon Grandpa Seth in the spirit realm and he says that he can help them, but only for ten minutes (at which point he can't reappear in their world ever again). He says they need to destroy Stonehenge, Magic Stone, and Joshua is teleported to Creedence's house moments before the family is attacked by hordes of goblins. How they got in we'll never know.
9. Joshua is able to save himself from the goblins by eating which of these?

Answer: A double-decker bologna sandwich

When he appears at Creedence's house, Joshua is met by his grandfather who presents him with a bag containing a mystery item he assures will come in handy...but he can only use it when he really needs it. They both find the glowing, smoking magic stone that is 'Stonehenge, Magic Stone' (not that you can miss it) and touch it to try to put an end to the curse of the goblins. This is when Creedence calls upon the goblins and they disappear, saving the Waits family from almost certain death. The time runs out for Grandpa Seth who promptly evaporates into nothingness.

Creedence is able to capture Joshua and toss him to the goblins who, in a brief moment, make the mistake of dropping him on the floor. Creedence plans to feed him plant food to transform him but he opens Grandpa Seth's backpack to find a double-decker bologna sandwich and eats it, making his bloodstream toxic to the goblins (because that's how it works).

The rest of the family arrives at that moment and they place their hands on Stonehenge, Magic Stone. With the power of goodness, the family is able to defeat Creedence and the others causing some to explode and others to die in seemingly painful seizures.
10. Who ultimately becomes goblin food in the end of the film?

Answer: Mrs. Waits

The family drives back home to their suburban house and, clearly exhausted, Joshua's father says he needs to go to the office (because clearly there are more important things); he decides to take Elliot and Holly to Elliot's place while Joshua and his mother stay home.

In the kitchen, Joshua's mother bites into an apple, one from a bowl in the fridge. Joshua, despite having not eaten in days, seems to not be hungry and he heads upstairs to his room. When Joshua sits down to play with his toys he thinks he hears something whispering in the house. He checks the bathroom to see if his mother is in the shower but finds chlorophyll-green inside. She's become half-human, half-plant!

When Joshua heads to the kitchen he finds that the apples contain green goo. At the kitchen table, the goblins are eating his mother. A goblin asks if he wants some.

Fin.
