"Treasure Island" (1950) Trivia Quiz

"Treasure Island" was set in 1756. Black Dog the pirate came to the Admiral Benbow, an inn on the west coast of England, looking for Captain William Bones. Jim Hawkins told Black Dog that he had never heard of him, but Black Dog looked behind the counter and recognized Bones' sea chest in the open storage space underneath the staircase.

Bobby Driscoll (1937-1968) was one of the silver screen's brightest child stars. His first movie for Walt Disney was "Song of the South" (1946). At age twelve, he won a special Academy Award as the outstanding juvenile actor of 1949 for his work in "The Window" and Disney's "So Dear To My Heart".

In 1950, Bobby played the part of Jim Hawkins in "Treasure Island". He was the voice of Peter Pan in Disney's 1953 full-length animated movie "Peter Pan", and he also acted out Peter Pan's scenes for the animation artists. Jackie Cooper played Jim Hawkins in the 1934 movie "Treasure Island" that was directed by Victor Fleming and starred Wallace Beery as Long John Silver.

Billy Bones told Jim Hawkins that whereever Black Dog was, the one-legged man would not be far away. Jim realized later that the man Billy Bones was speaking of was Long John Silver.

Billy Bones knew that the pirates would be coming after him and the tresure map, so he gave the map to Jim Hawkins and sent him after help. Squire Trelawney, Dr. Livsey, and Jim arrived back at the Admiral Benbow and scared off the pirates, but it was too late for Billy Bones, he was dead.

The map showed the latitude and longitude of Flint's treasure island with an X marking the spot where the treasure, worth £700,000 was located.

Squire Trelawney meet Long John Silver when he went to Bristol to hire a ship to take him, Dr. Livsey, and Jim Hawkins on the hunt for Flint's treasure. How did Long John Silver and his pirates get aboard the ship? Long John Silver, who was running a tavern, was such a good cook that Squire Trelawney hired him as the ship's cook.

The Squire also gave Long John Silver authority to hire all of Silver's old shipmates, who Silver said had sailed with him under Admiral Hawk.

"Treasure Island" has endured as a classic adventure film because of its wonderful ensemble cast. One of the finest performances was that of English actor Robert Newton's Long John Silver. Robert Newton (1905-1956) also played Long John Silver in the 1954 movie "Long John Silver" (also released as "Long John Silver's Return to Treasure Island") and in the 1955 Australian television series "The Adventures of Long John Silver".

Some of the other cast of Disney's "Treasure Island" included: Finley Curree as Billy Bones, Basil Sydney as Captain Smollett, and Walter Fitzgerald as Squire Trelawney.

Long John Silver told George Merry that he would take care of Mr. Arrow, and so he did. When Long John Silver told Jim Hawkins that he wanted to sweeten Mr. Arrow's temper by fixing him a Rum Duff, Jim got a bottle of rum for him from the Squire. On a stormy night, when a man would most need his sea legs, Long John Silver invited Mr. Arrow into the galley for some Rum Duff, leaving the rum bottle beside Mr. Arrow's plate. Mr. Arrow tipped up the rum and staggered back up the ladder and out onto the stormy deck. That was the last that was seen of Mr. Arrow.

In the next scene, Long John and all the crew are on the deck at Mr. Arrow's memorial service. As Captain Smollett finished the service, a big "Arr-men!" was heard from Long John.

Jim was down inside the apple barrel when he oveheard Long John Silver and his men plotting to take over the ship just as soon as they reached the island.

Ben Gunn told Jim Hawkins that Long John Silver, who had been Flint's quartermaster, had marooned him on the island five years ago. Gunn showed Jim the boat he had made out of bamboo and goat skin. Gunn then took Jim to the old stockade to join Squire Trelawney, Dr. Livsey, and Capt. Smollett.

Jim snuck out the stockade after dark and rowed out to the Hispaniola in Ben Gunn's boat. The two pirates left to guard the ship, Agate and Israel Hands, were fighting, and Hands killed Agate. Israel Hands followed Jim up the rigging and stabbed him, and Jim shot Hands. Jim took down the Skull and Cross Bones flag, ran up Union Jack, and steered the ship toward the bay.

When Long John Silver looked out into the bay from the top of the stockade with a spyglass, he saw the Hispaniola flying the Union Jack. He knew that without the ship, the pirates had no way off the island.
