Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The actor who played the undertaker, R. Ryan, appeared in which movie?

Answer: The Searchers

Hank Worden played the part of R. Ryan in "True Grit".

He played Mose Harper in "The Searchers". This classic movie starred John Wayne as Ethan Edwards, who had returned from the War between the States. His brother and his family were killed by Indians and his two nieces taken captive. He searched for years to find the one niece still living.

John Wayne's real life son, Ethan, was named after the movie character.

The Buddy Holly classic song, "That'll Be The Day" title was taken from the phrase Ethan Edwards used in the movie.

Hank Worden also appeared in other John Wayne movies, including "Big Jake" as Hank, "McClintock!" as Curly Fletcher, and "Red River" as Simms Reeves.
2. The actor who played the horse dealer, Col. Stonehill, also appeared in which movie?

Answer: Rooster Cogburn

Strother Martin appeared in the sequel to "True Grit", "Rooster Cogburn", as the irritable sailor, Shanghai McCoy.

"Rooster Cogburn" reprised the Duke's character from "True Grit". Wayne and Katherine Hepburn were good together but the movie itself, like so many sequels, was an inferior effort. Hepburn played the part of Miss Eula Goodnight, a straight-laced minister's daughter whose father was killed by the bad guys. Rooster had been brought out of retirement to track them down, as they stole nitroglycerine from an Army detail.

Martin also appeared as Jeb Ross in "The Sons of Katie Elder".
3. The actor who played Moon, killed by his friend Emmitt Quincy, also appeared in which movie?

Answer: Sons of Katie Elder

Dennis Hopper, well known for his part in "Easy Rider", the 60's counterculture, motorcycle adventure with Peter Fonda, played Dave Hastings, the son of the bad guy, in "Sons of Katie Elder".

The four Elder brothers came back to town for the funeral of their mother, Katie, who did not appear in the movie. While there, they learned that the family property had been lost to Morgan Hastings, Dave's father. It turned out that all was not on the up and up in that transaction and the Elders set out to make it right.

Dean Martin played the part of one of the Elder brothers, Tom.
4. Judge Parker, the hanging judge, was played by this actor, who also appeared in what other movie?

Answer: Sons of Katie Elder

James Westerfield appeared as Mr. Vennar, one of the townfolk, in the "Sons of Katie Elder". The family ranch had been gambled away by the Elder brothers' father when he was said to be drunk, and he was killed the same night. The four Elder brothers, reunited for their mother's funeral, set out to right the wrong.

The actor who played Judge Parker in the sequel to "True Grit", "Rooster Cogburn" was John McIntire.
5. The sheriff in Fort Smith, who had no jurisdiction in the Indian Nation, gave Mattie her Poppa's gun and told her about Rooster. He was also in what film?

Answer: Big Jake

John Doucette played the part of the Texas Ranger leader, Buck Duggan, in "Big Jake".

John Wayne played Jake, whose grandson was kidnapped and held for ransom. Jake's estranged wife, who ran the wealthy ranch and was played by frequent female lead in Duke movies, Maureen O'Hara, sent for Jake. Jake went off on horseback to deliver the ransom while the Texas Rangers drove off in new-fangled autos, hoping to ambush the bad guys.

Of course it failed leaving Jake, along with his two sons and his faithful Indian companion, Sam Sharpnose, to rescue Little Jake.
6. The deputy who was there when Rooster unloaded the prisoners he had brought to Fort Smith and spoke kindly to Mattie when she tried to see Rooster, was also in a non speaking role in this movie. Which one was it?

Answer: Rio Bravo

Myron Healy, that fellow with the familar face who seemed to be in every other western movie, played one of the bad guys, not named, in the bar scene in "Rio Bravo".

"Rio Bravo" was basically the same movie as "El Dorado", but with Dean Martin as the drunken sheriff, Rick(y) Nelson as John Wayne's new sidekick, and Walter Brennan as the sheriff's faithful assistant, comparing to Robert Mitchum, James Caan, and Arthur Hunnicutt respectively. The first was released in 1959, the second in 1967.

It was the same basic story. Bad guys tried to take things over, John Wayne helped the sheriff sober up and defeat them.
7. The actor who played the "original" Mexican Bob was also in what movie?

Answer: The Undefeated

Carlos Rivas had a small part as Diaz in "The Undefeated".

A bunch of Confederate soldiers headed to Mexico after the war. They were captured by supporters of Juarez who opposed Maximillian. They were to be executed, unless the herd of horses owned by John Wayne, who was a Union officer, were turned over to the Juarez faction, rather than to Maximillian.

Union or Confederate, they were all Americans and they joined forces for a happy outcome.

The movie featured two NFL football players, Roman Gabriel and Merlin Olsen.
8. The actor who played Chen Lee had another ethnic part in what movie?

Answer: McClintock!

H. W. Gim played the part of Ching in "McClintock!".

"McClintock!" was a comedic western with Maureen O'Hara as John Wayne's estranged wife. McClintock, played by Wayne, was the big man in town who lived on his ranch, attended to by Gim and others. The movie featured the scene of Wayne chasing O'Hara through town and giving her a spanking as the townfolk watched.
9. Red, the man at the ferry had a small part in which movie?

Answer: The War Wagon

Red Morgan played the part of Early in "The War Wagon".

The war wagon was an armor plated vehicle that was designed to carry gold to sale. John Wayne was defrauded of the gold bearing land and planned to exact his due. He was able to destroy the wagon but much gold was lost in the end.
10. Reuben J. Cogburn was played by an actor also in which movie?

Answer: McQ

Possibly the worst John Wayne movie ever made, he played the part of a policeman in "McQ", although this was rivaled by the equally dull policeman movie "Brannigan". There was not much plot in either and Wayne looked silly as a large man driving a small car. In "McQ" he was a police lieutenant whose friend, a fellow cop, was killed by bad guys. The Duke sought justice but learned that his friend was corrupt and part of the plot dealt with other police and drugs. He made things right in the end.

As an aside, in the hanging scene of "True Grit", where Mattie and Yarnell watched the prisoners on the gallows, in a non-speaking and uncredited role as one of the condemned men was Jay Silverheels, who played Tonto for many years in the tv show, "The Lone Ranger". No "Hi-Ho, Silver" but some "Getum-up, Scout".
