At the beginning of the film Meilin "Mei" Lee mentions that the #1 rule is to honor your parents which basically means you have to do everything they ask. While this is the #1 rule, Mei struggles to always do what her parents, specifically her mom, ask of her. Mei wants to be a 13 year old and have fun but feels held back by her mother's rules and overbearingness.

"Turning Red" is set in the city of Toronto in the year 2002. The CN Tower is visible in the film as Mei and her three best friends are laying on a roof looking at the moon. The SkyDome, renamed the Rogers Centre in 2005, is shown as the locale of a boy band concert.

The Lee Family Temple is located in the Chinatown area of Toronto and it gives the family a great sense of pride. It is successful and every day Mei helps her mom clean it as well as assisting with tours and performances.

Every day Mei and her mother would pray in their temple to Sun Yi. Sun Yi is described as a scholar, poet and defender of animals. One day while her people were under attack Sun Yi prayed to her gods to turn her into a red panda so that she could defend her people. The hint in the clue about the two 20th Chinese leaders refers to Sun Yat-sen and Puyi.

As a 13 year old Mei Lee has very strong emotions like anger, sadness, happiness and guilt that act to trigger her body to turn into a red panda. After Mei calms down her body gradually transforms back into her human self.

Prior to her red panda transformations that started at the age of 13 Mei Lee had black hair. After the red panda transformations started, her hair remained red even after she returned back to her human form. The other women in Mei Lee's family had undergone a ritual that locks away their red panda transformation abilities inside a talisman that they wear on their bodies.

Mei and her three best friends are obsessed with 4*Town and they see the concert as a rite of passage into adulthood. After each of their parents tell them they cannot go to the concert they devise a plan to save up $800 to get the four tickets to the show. Of course this involves lying to their parents about being in a Mathletes club when they are really selling pictures and merchandise of Mei in her red panda form.

While at the 4*Town concert Mei and her friends notice that Tyler is also attending. At first he tries to hide from them because Tyler knows that his love of 4*Town doesn't quite go with the persona he shows other people. Even so, Tyler eventually joins Mei and her friends at the concert and sings along with them to the songs.

The ritual must be completed during a red moon and the women participants must be within a circle drawn out in chalk. Also, the ritual requires that others sing or chant while a mystic performs the ceremony. While the ritual is ongoing the participant is partially transferred to a bamboo forest in which she decides if she wants to lock up her red panda transformation abilities. Unlike her other family members, Mei decides to keep her red panda transformation abilities rather than lock them up.
