"Girl" helped convey to the viewer that Jude's story was about a girl that he loved. It provided a solid introduction for the movie. Jude was a shipyard worker in Liverpool, England who lived with his mother. Jude was played by Jim Sturgess.

Answer: Her boyfriend went into the army.

Lucy's boyfriend, Daniel, joined the United States Army. He was sent to boot camp. This is why Lucy was upset during "All My Loving". In the same scene, Jude's girlfriend was upset because Jude was leaving for America.

He was not killed, but Max was injured during the war. He was also very traumatized in Vietnam by the killing he saw all around him.
