During a depth charge attack, he cracks under the strain and tries to get out of the submarine while it's submerged. "Das Boot" was released as a 2 1/2-hour movie in 1981, a 5-hour miniseries in the same decade, and a 3 1/2-hour director's cut in 1997.

The film follows his horribly miserable experiences during WWII, including being partially deafened by an aerial attack, discovering that his parents are likely dead, wandering through a minefield, and narrowly avoiding being burned to death when Nazis lock villagers in a church and set fire to it.

Many of the bullets used in the film were real, not blanks, and were fired near the actors.
