Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Roxanne" is based upon the 19th century stage play "Cyrano de Bergerac". Which French playwright authored the play?

Answer: Edmond Rostand

"Cyrano de Bergerac" was written by Edmond Rostand (1868-1918). It was his greatest work. Alexandre Dumas (pęre) (1802-1870) was most famous as the author of the historical novels "The Three Musketeers" and "The Count of Monte Cristo". He also wrote hundreds of plays during his literary career. Honore' de Balzac (1799-1850) was a French novelist whose masterpiece was a compilation of a series of novels and short stories entitled "The Human Comedy". Moliere (1622-1673) was one of France's greatest playwrights, whose comedic masterpieces included "The School for Husbands", "The School for Wives", and "The Doctor In Spite of Himself".
2. Steve Martin plays C.D. Bales, one of the most well-liked and respected citizens of the town that's the setting for "Roxanne". What is C.D.'s occupation?

Answer: fire chief

C.D. is the chief of the town's volunteer fire department. "I have a dream," he tells his bumbling, incompetent volunteer firemen. "I would like the people of this community to feel that if there were a fire, calling the fire department would actually be a wise thing to do!"
3. Daryl Hannah plays Roxanne, a beautiful blonde visitor to the town. What is Roxanne's occupation?

Answer: a college student studying astronomy

Roxanne Kowalski, a graduate student of astronomy, thinks she may have discovered a new comet. "If I have," she tells C.D., "I'll get to graduate, and name the comet as well."
4. As our movie opens, C.D. must defend himself against a couple of obnoxious, intoxicated fellows who order him off the sidewalk, make fun of him, then attack him. With what weapon does C.D. defend himself?

Answer: a tennis racquet

Late one afternoon, C.D. is walking from his house to return his friendęs borrowed tennis racquet. He's accosted by two inebriated visitors to the town. When he finishes defeating his drunken adversaries, he announces, "Game! Let's play again sometime!"
5. What's the name of the town that's the setting for "Roxanne"?

Answer: Nelson

"Roxanne" was actually filmed in the town of Nelson, British Columbia, and the town's name was carried over to the movie. Nelson's volunteer fire department kindly gave its permission to use its fire station and fire fighting equipment in the making of the film.
6. Chris McConnell is another of the town's summer visitors. What's the purpose of his visit to the town?

Answer: train the volunteer firemen in how to fight fires effectively

Chris is a professional fireman, called in by C.D. Bales to help train Nelson's hopelessly incompetent band of volunteer firefighters in how to fight fires.
7. Although Chris has a reputation of "being a maestro with the women," he always has a nervous reaction when he tries to talk for the first time to a woman he likes. What is that reaction?

Answer: He tries to run away, and he sometimes gets nauseous.

Chris tells C.D. that whenever he meets a woman he likes, he gets nervous and tries to run away. Sometimes he gets sick to his stomach. Usually, when he runs away, he manages to trip over his own two feet, knocking someone or something to the ground.
8. The town's mayor is always looking for a gimmick to draw more tourists to the town. One day, he's seen walking down the main street with his latest idea in tow. What does the mayor have?

Answer: the town's "promotional cow" on a lead

The mayor's idea is to teach the "promotional cow" to drink beer. Then the suds-guzzling bovine's picture would be taken and put on all of the townęs signs and other promotional literature.
9. Chris desperately wants to meet Roxanne, but he can't bring himself to talk to her. He proposes an idea to C.D. to "break the ice" with Roxanne. What's his idea?

Answer: Chris would write a letter to Roxanne.

Initially, Chris hits on the idea of writing a letter to Roxanne. He takes the letter to C.D. and asks for his help in improving it. The letter is so bad, though, that C.D. ends up writing it for him.
10. Chuck is a totally obnoxious jerk who fancies himself a ladies man. In an early scene, he "hits" on Roxanne by inviting her to what?

Answer: a town tradition of "hot-tubbing"

"So, a hundred years ago, the town's settlers began a tradition of hot-tubbing?" Roxanne asks incredulously. Naturally, she brushes Chuck off.
11. Why can't C.D. just simply get his bulbous, over sized nose fixed?

Answer: He's allergic to anesthetics.

C.D. barges into Dr. Dave Schipisi's office, frustrated by the fact he can't seem to get Roxanne to show any interest in him. He pleads, "Cut it off, Dave. Give me 'the American Beauty.'" Dave replies, "I can't do that. Allergies to anesthetics are dangerous. You know that; you've been in comas before."
12. Chris buys a publication from the local bookstore for Andy, one of the volunteer firefighters, because Andy is too embarrassed to buy it for himself. What does Chris buy for Andy?

Answer: a copy of "Being and Nothingness" by Jean-Paul Sartre

Roxanne is in the bookstore and sees Chris buy a copy of "Being and Nothingness." Of course, she thinks Chris is buying it for himself, and therefore must be a bit of an intellectual. It adds to his attractiveness in her eyes.
13. Chuck owns a business that has an unusual name. What's the name of his business?

Answer: All Things Dead

Chuck's store, "All Things Dead," specializes in furs, furniture, and other novelty items made from the skins and bones of exotic African wild animals.
14. What's the name of the bar where the obnoxious lout makes fun of C.D.'s nose, and then challenges C.D. to come up with 20 "something betters" than his "where ya goin', big nose?" insult?

Answer: 279 Club

"279 Club" can clearly be seen on the darts scoreboard in the scene where C.D. comes up with his "20 something better" insults.
15. What's the name of the cat the volunteer firefighters attempt to rescue from being stuck in a tree?

Answer: Snowball

The firefighters can't even seem to do THIS right! Their efforts to climb the tree, using ladders and other fire fighting equipment, end in abject failure. C.D. arrives late on the scene, and saves the day with a small can of cat food.
