Her father, a doctor, was the GP for the York Theatre, where her mother worked as the wardrobe mistress. Judi enrolled in the Central School of Speech and Drama, where she graduated with a first class degree in drama. She won the school's Gold Medal as Outstanding Student. Her first professional stage appearance was with the Old Vic Company in 1957. In 1961 she joined the Royal Shakespeare Company. She made her film debut in 1964 in "The Third Secret".

In 1970 Judi Dench was appointed an "Officer of the Order of the British Empire" (OBE), and in 1988 was made "Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire" (DBE), and in 2005 was appointed a "Companion of the Order of the Companions of Honour" (CH).
