Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of the castle where the mission took place?

Answer: Schloss Adler

Although the Schloss Adler never existed, the Burg Hohenwerfen was the actual castle used in the movie "Where Eagles Dare", and it also appeared in the film "The Sound of Music".
Baden Baden is a town located at the western foothills of the Black Forest.
Colditz was the infamous inescapable castle that served as a P.O.W camp.
Berchtesgaden was Hitler's private home in the Alps, which also served as a resort for many of his other top German brass.
2. Why was the phrase used to describe the castle as "The castle of the Eagles"?

Answer: Only an eagle could get to it.

This was mentioned during the mission briefing at the beginning of the movie. The castle was the headquarters of the German Secret Service in Southern Bavaria. The title of the movie was from Act l Scene ll of Shakespeare's play Richard III: "the world is grown so bad, that wrens make prey where eagles dare not perch".
3. What was the name of the radio operator who was the first commando to die out of the crew?

Answer: Harrod

Harrod was killed as soon as the group parachuted out of the plane. Major Smith believed he was struck on the back of the head by either the haft of a knife, or the butt of a gun. The double-agents were trying to eliminate as many of the commandos as possible, and Harrod was their first victim.

Berkeley, Thomas, and Christiansen were all found out to be double-agents working undercover in England for Germany. MacPherson was the fifth commando in the group, but he later got his throat cut.
4. Who arrived at the castle on board a helicopter?

Answer: General Rosemeyer

Colonel Kramer was the Commanding Officer at the Schloss Adler. He informed General Rosemeyer, his superior in Berlin, that he had captured a General of the Allied Forces. General Rosemeyer then arrived to interrogate the prisoner, with hopes of revealing explicit Allied plans.
Colonel Turner was the head conspirator who worked for the Germans in England.
Major Von Hapen was the head of the Gestapo in Southern Bavaria.
5. In the middle of the movie we encountered Mary Elison, a British female agent. What did she change her name to in order to acquire a job at the castle?

Answer: Maria Schenk

Maria's job on the mission was to gather inside information on the whereabouts of a captured Allied General, and she was successful.
Mary Elison/ Maria Schenk, played by Mary Ure, was married to legendary actor Robert Shaw. Mary Ure was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in the 1960 movie "Sons and Lovers".
6. Mary had a few drinks and a dull conversation with a high ranking SS officer. What was his name?

Answer: Major Von Hapen

Major Von Hapen seemed to become more suspicious as the storyline progressed. He began to trust absolutely no one.
7. After the conversation between Mary and Major Von Hapen, suspicion arose when Mary gave false information as to the location of buildings in her home town. What was her supposed home town?

Answer: Dusseldorf

"Funny, I seem to remember the cathedral being on the other side of town..." With that said, Major Von Hapen began to realize that something was going on, and he escorted Mary to her room before beginning his investigation.
8. When the interrogation proceeded, Major Smith requested to call whom for the verification of his identity?

Answer: Major Wilner

Major Wilhelm Wilner was Colonel Kesselring's adjutant. Major Smith called Major Wilner to prove that his name was Major Schmitt. Smith worked as a double agent for Britain in Germany, and so Major Wilner proved that Schmitt was who he claimed to be by asking Colonel Kramer to check for two parallel marks on his arm. He verified this.
Major Schmitt was Major Smith's other alias.
Admiral Rolland was the British officer whom we met at the beginning.
9. Who were the three double agents Major Smith proved guilty with the help of Colonel Kramer?

Answer: Thomas, Christiansen, and Berkeley

Thomas, Christiansen, and Berkeley were the three men who worked for the Germans as British Army Officers. They had posed as loyal commandos for some time, until high ranking officials created a plan to indentify the traitors. MacPherson and Harrod were the only two legitimate commandos, and so they were killed early in the movie. MacPherson's first name was Jock.

This would make a slight reference to the T.V. show Hogan's Heroes, during which, an episode included a prisoner of war claiming that his name was "Jock MacPherson".

The episode aired in 1965, and this movie was made in 1968.
10. Who did Clint Eastwood play?

Answer: Lieutenant Schaffer

Lieutenant Schaffer was brought along in the primarily British mission because he was an American officer. Major Smith felt that since Schaffer was from another army, he was the only one to be trusted. In the end, Schaffer managed to escape the castle with Major Smith and Mary. Maitland, Colt, and Kelly were all characters appearing in Eastwood's 1970 war comedy "Kelly's Heroes", another classic.

In the scene where Major Von Hapen died, Schaffer said "Smith!" indicating that Major Smith should duck so he could shoot Von Hapen. If you listen closely, it almost sounds like Smith calls Schaffer by his own name, even though Eastwood and Burton hardly sound alike.
