Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The protagonist of the film is Catherine 'Kya' Clark. What derogatory nickname do the other residents of Barkley Cove, North Carolina call her?

Answer: Marsh Girl

"Where the Crawdads Sing" takes place in the fictional town of Barkley Cove in Eastern North Carolina. The opening scene has Kya explain how the area contains both marsh and swamp. Due to where her home is located, the townspeople refer to Kya as Marsh Girl. The nickname is certainly not a compliment but rather it is said to her condescendingly.
2. What is ruled as the cause of death for Kya's former boyfriend, Chase Andrews, who died on October 30, 1969?

Answer: Fall from a fire tower

Chase Andrews is described as a former star quarterback who came from a wealthy family. Near the beginning of the film two boys find Chase's body and eventually the coroner declares that he died after falling from a 63 foot high fire tower. Chase's actual death is never shown in the film.
3. Very few people are nice to Kya in Barkley Cove. However, when she is taken into custody a nice attorney offers to represent her. What is this attorney's name?

Answer: Tom Milton

Tom Milton is played by David Strathairn. In an early scene in the film Milton is seen having a drink at a bar and being visibly upset about how people judged the 'Marsh Girl' as guilty without the trial having even taken place. From Milton's conversation with other bar patrons it seems that he is retired and has come out of retirement to represent Kya.

Sixteen years before the trial Milton had met Kya in town and he told her that she has just as much of a right to go to school as the other kids her age.
4. In a flashback scene to 1953 Kya is shown attending school for one day. What word does she incorrectly spell that causes the other students to make fun of her?

Answer: Dog

The teacher of the classroom asks Kya if she can read and write but Kya doesn't really answer yes or no. Kya is then asked to spell the word dog which she incorrectly spells g-o-d. This mistake causes the other students to laugh at her and call her names so she runs out of the school.

In Kya's narration about the scene she mentions that it was the only day she remembers ever attending school.
5. Kya's whole family abandons her before she is even a teenager. What does she initially do at nighttime to help ease the feeling of being alone?

Answer: Sleep on the porch so she can hear the crickets and frogs

Kya had three older sisters and an older brother who all left shortly after their mother left their home. Their exodus from home was prompted by their father beating them. Kya ends up living with her father for some time but he ends up leaving their home as well. Rather than run away, Kya decides to stay but she is scared at nighttime so she sleeps on the porch so she can hear animal sounds at night that give her comfort.
6. Another flashback scene in the film depicts events from 1962. At this time Kya falls in love for the first time. What does she exchange with Tate when they reunite in 1962?

Answer: Bird feathers

In a prior scene in the film set in 1953 Tate is shown being friendly with Kya but her father tells her to stay away from Tate. In 1962 Tate and Kya are both exploring the marsh and they exchange bird feathers that they have found. The two both have a love for the local nature of Barkley Cove and they are shown observing birds and collecting their fallen feathers.
7. Although they are in love, Tate decides that he will go away to college so as not to follow in the same line of work as his father. What is his father's occupation?

Answer: Shrimper

Tate tells Kya that he has to go away to college so that he can make a better life for him and her and that eventually she will have to leave too. Kya is heartbroken and feels that if Tate leaves he will not come back to her regardless of what he tells her. Tate further explains that he doesn't want to be a shrimper like his father and if he stays in Barkley Cove that is almost certainly going to happen. Tate ends up studying biology in college and he does return to Barkley Cove but much later than he had promised Kya.
8. In 1968 Kya fears that she may lose her home to developers so she goes to her local government office. What does she find out that her family owes $800 for?

Answer: Back taxes

The main reason Kya goes to her local government office is to ensure that she is the legal owner of her home. When she is there she discovers that her home has been with her Clark ancestors since 1897. However, she is informed that she owes $800 in back taxes and according to the law whoever pays these back taxes can make a rightful claim that the land and home are theirs.
9. Reflecting her interests and talents, what is the first book that Kya gets published for which she is given a check for $5,000?

Answer: Shells of the Carolina Marsh

Both Tate and Chase tell Kya that her drawings and descriptions of the local animal and plant life are good enough to be published. Kya decides to send some of her original work to a publisher and she is pleasantly surprised that they are interested and it eventually becomes the book "Shells of the Carolina Marsh".

This book is displayed prominently at the Barkley Cove's general store and her estranged brother who lives far away sees the book and decides to come back and visit Kya. Later on Kya would get additional books published about insects, sea birds and mushrooms of North Carolina.
10. What verdict does the jury reach in regard to Kya being tried for the murder of Chase Andrews?

Answer: Not guilty

Kya is found not guilty for the murder of Chase Andrews. Her attorney, Tom Milton, makes arguments that Kya had an alibi of being located in another city when Chase died and there being very little evidence at the crime scene.

In a flash forward sequence decades later Tate is shown living with Kya in her childhood home. After Kya dies Tate is going through her belongings and he is shocked to find a shell necklace that Kya had given to Chase Andrews at the back of one of her books. The shell necklace being missing from Chase's deceased body was mentioned at Kya's murder trial in 1969 by Chase's mother of being indicative of foul play by Kya so maybe she really was guilty...
