Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who directed "The Big Lebowski"?

Answer: The Coen Brothers

"The Big Lebowski" was absolutely brilliant. Besides "The Big Lebowski", the Coen Brothers directed "Blood Simple", "Raising Arizona", "the Hudsucker Proxy" and "Fargo" to name a few.
2. What Texan directed "Bottle Rocket"?

Answer: Wes Anderson

Wes Anderson met Owen Wilson at the University of Texas, Austin. They were movie partners in crime from then on.
3. Who directed "Near Dark"?

Answer: Kathyrn Bigelow

Kathryn Bigelow also directed "Point Break", "Strange Days", and "K-19: The Widowmaker", strangely enough.
4. A Texan directed this wonderful film. Who directed "Waking Life"?

Answer: Richard Linklater

Rachel Galligan directed "Awakening" (1990), Aaron Russo directed "Rude Awakening" (1989) and Penny Marshall directed "Awakenings" (1990).
5. Who directed "Desperate Living"?

Answer: John Waters

"Desperate Living" is one of my favorite John Waters films even though Divine is not in it. Other Waters films include "Hairspray", "Pink Flamingoes", "Multiple Maniacs" and "Female Trouble".
6. Who directed "Tokyo Drifter" ("Tokyo nagaremono")?

Answer: Suzuki Seijun

Suzuki Seijun was the original Quentin Tarantino. Over his career, Suzuki made films featuring hard-boiled cops and elaborate gun fighting sequences with a touch of the art house that puts Tarantino to shame. I recommend "Branded to Kill" (1967). The killer has a fetish for steamed rice. Must be seen to be believed.
7. Who directed "The Pornographers"?

Answer: Shohei Imamura

Shohei Imamura is one of the most understated Japanese directors. He constantly is making thought provoking films that go at a pace all of its own. Other Imamura films include "The Eel", "Dr. Akagi", and "The Ballad of Narayama".
8. Which Chinese director ran the "Days of Being Wild"?

Answer: Wong Kar-Wai

Wong Kar-Wai has to be one of my top ten favorite directors of all time. Strange but true. For some reason his movies really move me. If you haven't seen anything of his yet please do so. Some of his other films include "Ashes of Time", "Fallen Angels", "Chungking Express" and more recently "In the Mood for Love".
9. Who directed "The Horse Thief"?

Answer: Tian Zhuangzhuang

Tian Zhuangzhuang's "The Horse Thief" was a very interesting and controversial movie/documentary. It employed many techniques of documentary filmmaking which benefits the film greatly as Tian's subject is a Tibetan horse thief. The film looked at many Tibetan religious and ritual practices but doesn't offer any explanation of these practices.

This perhaps is the only downfall of the movie. The viewer who is not familiar with Tibetan religious practices are often left in the dark as to what is going on. Overall however, the film is very beautiful.
10. Who directed "Withnail and I"?

Answer: Bruce Robinson

Bruce Robinson is primarily known as a screenplay writer. He wrote "The Killing Fields" coincidentally. Richard Grant and Paul McGann of course starred in "Withnail and I" and Hanif Kureishi directed "My Beautiful Laundrette" and "London Kills Me".
11. Who directed "Trainspotting"?

Answer: Danny Boyle

While Boyle did the directing, Hodge writes and MacDonald produces. Sometimes they overlap, but not in the case of "Trainspotting".
12. Who directed "Small Faces"?

Answer: Gillies MacKinnon

"Small Faces" is a fantastic film for those who are interested in seeing how Glasgow was in the late '60s and early '70s. MacKinnon also directed "Hideous Kinky".
13. Who directed the classic "Easy Rider"?

Answer: Dennis Hopper

Peter Fonda, Jack Nicholson and Terry Southern all helped to write "Easy Rider", but it was Dennis Hopper who directed it.
14. Who directed "Five Easy Pieces"?

Answer: Bob Rafelson

Even though Bob Rafelson hasn't done a lot, he still did "Five Easy Pieces" and "Head" (You know, that Monkees movie).
15. Who directed "To Die For"?

Answer: Gus Van Sant

Before Gus Van Sant made the monstrosities known as "Good Will Hunting" and "Finding Forrester", he had cred with films like "My Own Private Idaho", and "Drugstore Cowboy".
16. Who directed "The Naked Kiss" (1964)?

Answer: Samuel Fuller

I can't tell you how many people were influenced by Sam Fuller. Although he remained largely a cult director his style was "copped" by many a contemporary director. A must see is "Tigrero: A Film that Was Never Made". In it Jim Jarmusch interviews Fuller about a movie set in the jungles of Brazil that was never made.
17. Who directed "Fast Times at Ridgemont High"?

Answer: Amy Heckerling

Originally, "Fast Times" got an X-rating because of an explicit sex scene between Jennifer Jason Leigh's character and Robert Romanus' character. It later got an R rating after they took out a bit of full frontal nudity. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, they kept that bit with Phoebe Cates coming out of the water! What a double standard!
18. Who directed "The Producers" (1968)?

Answer: Mel Brooks

It was his first film, and one of the best.
19. Who made "Strictly Ballroom"?

Answer: Baz Luhrmann

Of course, Baz Luhrmann also directed "William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet" and "Moulin Rouge!".
20. Who directed one of my favorite Emilio Estevez films, "Repo Man"?

Answer: Alex Cox

Teehee. Tracey Walter plays Miller (a repo man) in the movie. Otto Maddox is Emilio Estevez's character in the film, and Keith Morris is the lead singer for the Circle Jerks, a band featured on the soundtrack to "Repo Man".
