Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. My nose grew upon telling lies. Who voiced me?

Answer: Dickie Jones

Jones, born on February 25th, 1927 in Snyder, Texas, lent his voice to the title role of Pinocchio. Pinocchio was a puppet who came alive one night thanks to The Blue Fairy. His father, Gepetto, was both thrilled and shocked. Pinocchio was informed that he would be a real boy if he proved he was truthful, brave and unselfish. Jiminy Cricket helped Pinocchio out as his conscience and was in charge of showing him the difference between right and wrong. One day, Pinocchio ran into a nefarious showman named Stromboli who locked him in a bird cage and planned to exploit Pinocchio for profit and then eventually kill him.

When Pinocchio got assistance while in the bird cage, he told certain lies and, as a result, his nose grew. At the end of the movie, Pinocchio became a real boy since he met the requirements of being truthful, brave and unselfish. Jones was in the films "Requiem for a Fighter", "The Devil's Bedroom" and "The Wild Dakotas".
2. I brought Pinocchio to life. Who voiced me?

Answer: Evelyn Venable

Venable, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, voiced The Blue Fairy. We first saw The Blue Fairy on the night Gepetto wished on a star that his puppet, Pinocchio, would be a real boy. The Blue Fairy entered Gepetto's home and told him while he was asleep that he'd been a good man and therefore she would grant his wish. With a stroke of her wand, Pinocchio came alive and was shocked to see how he could walk and talk.

The Blue Fairy set the conditions which he must meet in order to be transformed into a real boy.

When The Blue Fairy aided Pinocchio while he was locked in a bird cage, she asked him why he did not go to school that day. After Pinocchio's nose grew as a consequence of lying to her, she used her wand to both restore his nose to normal size and allow him to escape from the cage. Venable starred in the movies "He Hired the Boss", "Lucky Cisco Kid" and "Female Fugitive".
3. I gave Pinocchio an apple to give to his teacher on his first day of school. Who voiced me?

Answer: Christian Rub

Rub, born in 1886 in Passau, Bavaria, Germany, lent his voice to Gepetto. Gepetto was a puppet maker and he was delighted at how lovely his new creation, Pinocchio, looked. After he created Pinocchio, he danced with him using his strings and sang the song "Little Wooden Head".

After Gepetto celebrated Pinocchio becoming alive, he informed him that he would be going to school the next day. When morning arrived, Gepetto dressed up Pinocchio and gave him an apple to give to his teacher. Gepetto got upset when Pinocchio did not come home that night so he went out looking for him. Near the end of the film, we found out that Gepetto took his cat, Figaro, and his fish, Cleo, out fishing and they were swallowed by Monstro the whale. Pinocchio managed to get inside Monstro's mouth and therefore reunited with Gepetto, Cleo and Figaro.

In the show's final scene, Pinocchio and Gepetto used firewood to cause Monstro to open his mouth and sneeze so they could escape from him. Rub played characters in the films "You Can't Take It With You", "Fall Guy" and "Something for the Birds".
4. I advised Pinocchio not to go off to become an actor. Who voiced me?

Answer: Cliff Edwards

Edwards voiced Jiminy Cricket. Jiminy was Pinocchio's conscience and guided him on issues of morality. While Jiminy led Pinocchio to school, Pinocchio ran into a man named Honest John who told him he could make lots of money as an actor. Jiminy told Pinocchio to inform Honest John that he could not go there since he had to attend school. Pinocchio ignored Jiminy Cricket's advice and went to the theater.

After Pinocchio wound up in the bird cage, Jiminy Cricket came to him and tried to spring the lock open but he was unsuccessful.

At the film's conclusion, Jiminy Cricket was rewarded for his efforts with a gold badge. Edwards had roles in the movies "Gone With the Wind", "His Girl Friday" and "They Gave Him a Gun".
5. I locked Pinocchio in a bird cage. Who voiced me?

Answer: Charles Judels

Judels, born on August 17th, 1882 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, lent his voice to Stromboli. Stromboli was a showman who held shows which featured marionettes performing songs and he saw the opportunity to make lots of money off Pinocchio by putting him in those shows.

As Pinocchio was the first marionette who could talk, Stromboli knew this would bring him big audiences. Pinocchio walked down a flight of stairs when the show began but tripped and this upset Stromboli. In Stromboli's next scene, he promised Pinocchio a future as a popular actor and Pinocchio told him how exciting that was.

When he tried to leave to go tell his father, Stromboli locked him in a bird cage. Judels starred in the films "The Great Ziegfeld", "San Francisco" and "Panhandle".
6. I was the first person to talk to Pinocchio about Pleasure Island. Who voiced me?

Answer: Walter Catlett

Catlett, a native of San Francisco, California, voiced Honest John. Honest John was first seen watching a bunch of kids go to school and that was when he ran into Pinocchio. Honest John realized Pinocchio was a marionette without strings and he could not believe his eyes.

He managed to convince Pinocchio to become an actor instead of getting an education. Honest John was next seen with Pinocchio when he stopped him from running home after he and Jiminy Cricket escaped from Stromboli. Honest John told Pinocchio about a fun place called Pleasure Island and, as was the case with the theater, this convinced Pinocchio to give the place a try. Catlett was in the movies "Mr. Deeds Goes to Town", "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and "Bringing Up Baby".
7. I was the first person to mention that boys on Pleasure Island would not return as boys. Who voiced me?

Answer: Charles Judels

Judels also lent his voice to the coachman. The coachman spoke with Honest John and his friend, Gideon, about his plans to take many young boys to Pleasure Island and this frightened Honest John. Honest John mentioned to the coachman how the law forbid anyone from entering Pleasure Island and was afraid one of the boys would turn the coachman into the police. That was when the coachman reminded him how boys on Pleasure Island did not return as boys (we later found out that boys on Pleasure Island turned into donkeys).

The coachman drove a carriage full of boys, including Pinocchio, to the boat to take them to Pleasure Island. He was next seen on Pleasure Island when he informed the gatekeepers to close and lock the gates. Judels also starred in the films "Her Adventurous Night", "The Mighty McGurk" and "Tangier".
8. I played pool with Pinocchio. Who voiced me?

Answer: Frankie Darro

Darro, born in 1917 in Chicago, Illinois, voiced Lampwick. Lampwick met Pinocchio while they both rode on the carriage to Pleasure Island and he informed Pinocchio about what a fun place it was. While on the island, Pinocchio and Lampwick played pool and Jiminy Cricket interrupted the game to scold Pinocchio for what he had done. Eventually, Jiminy Cricket left the pool room and Lampwick advised Pinocchio to let him go.

In the middle of their game, Lampwich transformed into a donkey and this frightened Pinocchio since he began to change into one himself. Luckily, Pinocchio did not transform fully into a donkey like Lampwick, and only got donkey ears and a donkey tail. Darro had parts in the movies "Operation Petticoat", "The Phantom Empire" and "Wild Boys of the Road".
9. I was with Honest John when he first met Pinocchio. Who voiced me?

Answer: Mel Blanc

Blanc, born on May 30th, 1908 in San Francisco, California, lent his voice to Gideon. Gideon was a cat and friend to Honest John and they both met Pinocchio while he walked to school. Both Gideon and Honest John were annoyed when Jiminy Cricket came along and Gideon noticed him atop Honest John's hat.

He got a mallet to hit Jiminy Cricket but instead hit Honest John by accident. Later on in the film, Honest John and Gideon ran into Pinocchio again and Honest John believed Pinocchio to be sick. Impersonating a doctor, he got out a pad and paper for Gideon to write down Pinocchio's symptoms. Blanc voiced characters in the films "Duck Amuck", "What's Opera, Doc?" and "Jetsons: The Movie".
10. We performed with Pinocchio in Stromboli's show. Who voiced us?

Answer: Patricia Page

Page voiced all the marionettes who starred with Pinocchio in a puppet show Stromboli hosted. There were several kinds of marionettes in the show, such as French ones and Russian ones. At times, the marionettes would bump into Pinocchio and others when they clicked up their skirts to dance. One thing all the marionettes had in common was noticing that Pinocchio did not have any strings.

When the show concluded, the audience applauded Pinocchio and the marionettes for a job well done. Page's only other acting credit was in the movie "Hammer the Toff".
