Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 'Le Salaire de la Peur', he played Mario, one of four men hired to deliver a dangerous cargo without proper safety precautions. As Jean-Marc Clement, he made love to Marilyn Monroe. Grand Prix driver Jean-Pierre Sarti was ready to retire when he came to a tragic end at Monza. Who was this suave European?

Answer: Yves Montand

'The Wages of Fear' (1953) is the English title of the first named film, a French/Italian production about delivering a cargo of nitroglycerin in South America. Montand played Clement in 'Let's Make Love' (1960) and the ill-fated Sarti in 'Grand Prix' (1966). The racing scenes in the latter are superb.
2. Emile de Becque fell in love across a crowded room. Signor Naccarelli had some concerns about his son's future wife, a young American girl. Roberto Orlandi lost out to a younger suitor in his pursuit of Prudence Bell. Which actor portrayed all three?

Answer: Rossano Brazzi

In 'South Pacific' (1958), Brazzi romanced Nellie Forbush (Mitzi Gaynor). Giorgio Tozzi provided his singing voice. In 'Light in the Piazza' (1962), George Hamilton (he of the perfect tan) played the younger Naccarelli, and Yvette Mimieux his bride-to-be. Orlandi lost out to a young American, played by Troy Donahue, in 1962's 'Rome Adventure'. Suzanne Pleshette played Prudence.
3. He played the eponymous Russian hero in one David Lean epic, and Sherif Ali ibn el Kharish in another. Twice he played Nicky Arnstein. Who is he?

Answer: Omar Sharif

Born Michael Shalhoub in Alexandria, Egypt, Sharif was Dr. Yuri Zhivago in 'Doctor Zhivago' (1965) and Sherif Ali in 'Lawrence of Arabia' (1962). His two turns as Nicky Arnstein were in 'Funny Girl' and 'Funny Lady', in 1968 and 1975. He was still active in films in 2004, and is also a world-class bridge player.
4. The role of Po-han, a coolie who was taught how the engine of the gunboat San Pablo worked, brought Best Supporting Actor nominations for both the Oscar and Golden Globe. In 'The Island at the Top of the World' he played an Inuit named Oomiak. His comedic skills were tested in the role of Calvin Coolidge Ishimura. Who is this Japanese actor?

Answer: Mako

It was his work in 'The Sand Pebbles' (1966) that brought the award nominations. He lost both - the Oscar to Walter Matthau in 'The Fortune Cookie', the Golden Globe to Richard Attenborough in 'The Sand Pebbles'. 'Island' (1974) was a fantasy-adventure.

The comedy was a Bob Hope vehicle, 'The Private Navy of Sgt. O'Farrell' from 1968. Mako, aka Mako Iwamatsu, also played Admiral Yamamoto in 'Pearl Harbor' (2001).
5. Albert Loriflan was 'The Playboy of Paris'. Honore Lachaille thanked Heaven 'for little girls'. Paul Barriere enjoyed the 'Can-Can'. Which debonair Frenchman brought these roles to life?

Answer: Maurice Chevalier

I fell in love with Chevalier at the age of seven, after seeing him as Lachaille in 'Gigi' (1958). Gallic charm oozed from every pore. 'Playboy' dates from 1930 while 'Can-Can' (1960) is set in Paris in the 1890s and also stars Frank Sinatra and Shirley MacLaine. His earliest entry at imdb.com is 'Trop credules' from 1908!
6. Heinrich Dorfmann claimed to be an aircraft designer, and was, of a sort. Franz von Werra really was 'The One That Got Away'. Wolf Hauser was a German student at Cambridge, who inevitably fell in love with a pretty English girl. Which actor portrayed them all?

Answer: Hardy Kruger

In 'The Flight of the Phoenix' (1965), the other crash survivors only discover quite late in the movie that Dorfmann designed model aeroplanes. 'The One That Got Away' (1957) is the true story of von Werra, the only German prisoner of war to make good his escape from Canada, and return to Germany.

As Hauser in 'Bachelor of Hearts' (1958), a light-hearted British comedy, Kruger romanced Sylvia Syms.
7. Antonius Block played chess with Death. Henrik Akerman in 'Wild Strawberries' and Tore in 'The Virgin Spring' were also performed for the same director. Roles outside his native country included Abner Hale and Father Lankester Merrin. Can you name him?

Answer: Max von Sydow

Von Sydow appeared in no fewer than thirteen films directed by the great Ingmar Bergman, including 'The Seventh Seal' (1957), in which he played Block, 'Strawberries' (1957) and 'Spring' (1960). He was Hale in 'Hawaii' (1966) and Father Merrin in 'The Exorcist' (1973).
8. Hans Rolfe, a defense attorney, was a role that brought a Best Actor Oscar to the actor who played it. A second nomination in that category was received for portraying Arthur Goldman, and the role of Johann in 'Julia' brought a nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Which European actor received these accolades?

Answer: Maximilian Schell

The Oscar-winning role of Rolfe was in 'Judgment at Nuremberg' (1961). Arthur Goldman was 'The Man in the Glass Booth' (1975), arrested by the Israelis as a suspected Nazi war criminal. 'Julia' (1977) starred Jane Fonda and Vanessa Redgrave, and was based on a novel by Lillian Hellman, played by Fonda in the movie.
9. A very early role for this actor was Azimoolah in 1916's 'The Victoria Cross'. More recognisable are roles such as Colonel Saito in 1957 and Colonel Suga in 1950, or Kuala the pirate in 1960's 'Swiss Family Robinson'. Who is this actor?

Answer: Sessue Hayakawa

The 1916 film was a drama, made in the US, which also starred Lou Tellegen and Ernest Joy. Colonel Saito was the sadistic camp commandant in 'The Bridge on the River Kwai' and Colonel Suga enjoyed a similar position in the women's internment camp depicted in 'Three Came Home', based on the true story of Agnes Keith and starring Claudette Colbert.

The 1960 version of 'Swiss Family' starred John Mills and Dorothy McGuire.
10. Johnny Monterez was a boxer. Private Johnny Rodriguez did not survive the movie 'Battleground'. Jose O'Rourke romanced bathing beauty Eve Barrett, and sang 'Baby It's Cold Outside' with her. Which Spanish-speaking actor played these parts?

Answer: Ricardo Montalban

Mexican-born Montalban became familiar to TV viewers in the seventies and eighties as Mr. Roarke on 'Fantasy Island'. He played Monterez in 'Right Cross' (1950) and the unlucky Rodriguez, who was wounded and left under a burned out vehicle while a friendly barrage was called down on his position, in the 1949 movie about the siege of Bastogne.

The much more light-hearted role of polo player O'Rourke was in 'Neptune's Daughter' (1949) opposite Esther Williams as Eve.
