Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Far Tick Hoe" (1958 - one word) was set in San Francisco. Who was NOT in the cast?

Answer: Grace Kelly

The blonde in "Vertigo" was Kim Novak, who played the wife of Helmore's character. Jimmy Stewart played the detective, Scottie Ferguson, who had a fear of heights, and who Helmore hired to keep an eye on his wife, about whom he was concerned. Bel Geddes played Scottie's friend Midge.
2. What was the name of the character who ran a motel in "Sigh Cow"? (1960 - one word)

Answer: Norman Bates

His performance as the sinister Bates in "Psycho" doomed Anthony Perkins to playing similar characters for much of the rest of his career. He even went so far as to reprise the role in a number of weak 'sequels' under the direction of lesser directors.
3. How did Hitch make his cameo appearance in "Lie Fib Oat"? (1944 - one word.)

Answer: In a newspaper advertisement

"Lifeboat" was set entirely in, well, a lifeboat, so Hitchcock had to be even more clever than usual to get his cameo appearance included. This was done by having a newspaper somehow make it into the boat along with the survivors, one of whom held it up so viewers could see an advertisement for a weight-loss product, featuring before and after photos of Hitch.

The cast included Tallulah Bankhead, William Bendix, John Hodiak and Hume Cronyn, as survivors of a torpedoed ship.
4. The hero of "Weir Fin Dough" (1954 - two words) was incapacitated. What was wrong with him?

Answer: His leg was broken.

James Stewart played L.B. 'Jeff' Jeffries, a photographer who became suspicious of the goings-on in a neighbour's apartment, whilst watching through his "Rear Window" as he recovered from a broken leg. He enlisted his girlfriend (Grace Kelly) and nurse (Thelma Ritter) to do the legwork for him, to try to find out if a murder really had been committed.
5. In "Sad Boat Tour" (1942 - one word), the hero has to go on the run and try to prove his innocence by catching the villain who really sabotaged the aircraft factory. Who played the wrongly accused Barry Kane?

Answer: Robert Cummings

After a chase that spans most of the United States, Cummings eventually confronts the "Saboteur", played by Norman Lloyd, in an exciting sequence at the top of the Statue of Liberty. Priscilla Lane and Otto Kruger also appeared in the movie.
6. Several classic Hitchcock moments occur in " Nor Thumb Buy Nor the Vest" (1959 - three words). Which of the following is NOT one of them?

Answer: A fight atop the Statue of Liberty

Cary Grant starred as advertising man Roger Thornhill, who is mistaken for a spy and gets involved in a number of life-threatening situations in "North by Northwest". The bad guys had poured the booze down his throat, so his protestations in a very amusing scene had some merit.

The crop-duster and Rushmore scenes are unforgettable. (The Statue of Liberty scene is from "Saboteur".) Eva Marie Saint and James Mason also starred.
7. Joel McCrea starred in "Four End Cornice Pundit" (1940 - two words). In what city was the film set?

Answer: London

"Foreign Correspondent" involves the efforts of the American reporter played by McCrea to track down German agents in London just before World War Two. Laraine Day, Herbert Marshall and George Sanders also appeared.
8. Which member of the cast of "Tub Herds" (1963 - two words) won a Golden Globe award for her performance in that movie?

Answer: Tippi Hedren

"The Birds" is a pretty scary story of what might happen if our 'feathered friends' decided to gang up and attack us! Tippi Hedren shared the Golden Globe for Most Promising Newcomer - Female with Ursula Andress ("Dr. No") and Elke Sommer ("The Prize"). The three wrong choices all were in the cast of "The Birds", along with Miss Hedren.
9. "Strain Jar Sonnet Rain" (1951 - four words) starred Robert Walker and Farley Granger. What sport did Granger's character play?

Answer: Tennis

Bruno Anthony (Walker) and tennis player Guy Haines (Granger) meet as "Strangers on a Train", and Bruno suggests that they could each do the other a favour - by murdering someone the other would like to be rid of. Haines doesn't take him seriously, which turns out to be a mistake. Ruth Roman and Leo G. Carroll also starred.
10. The characters played by Joseph Cotten and Teresa Wright in "Chad Hoe Huff Head Out" (1943 - four words) shared the same first name. What was it?

Answer: Charlie

Charlie Newton (Wright) adores her Uncle Charlie (Cotten), but comes to suspect that he might not be the model citizen she has always thought he was when a detective chasing a murderer comes looking for him in the thriller "Shadow of a Doubt". Macdonald Carey played the detective.
