Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Jerusalem, what gives Gerry a vital clue about the infection?

Answer: He sees the zombies pass by a feeble old man and a bald boy.

Gerry realizes that the zombies are not interested in eating diseased animals. The infirm old man was diseased, and the boy was probably bald from chemotherapy.

However, most predators in the real world, both those acting singly and social predators (those acting in a group), routinely target diseased, injured, very old, and very young animals because they are easier to catch. Transference of diseases and especially parasites from prey to predator is common.
2. How does Gerry get out of Jerusalem?

Answer: On a commercial jet, stopped by Israeli soldiers

The pilot of Gerry's plane sees the swarm of infected coming, and decides not to wait. At the same airfield there is a commercial jet about to take off with a plane full of passengers. Armed soldiers stand in front of the taxiing plane, and the plane stops and lowers a ladder for Gerry and Segen. The plane lifts off moments before the zombies swarm the runway.
3. Where is the pilot told to take Gerry and Segen?

Answer: To Cardiff (a World Health Organization facility location)

Thierry Umutoni directs the pilot to take Gerry and Segen to the (fictional) World Health Organization facility in Cardiff.
4. How do Gerry and Segen survive the outbreak on the plane?

Answer: Gerry throws a grenade

Gerry throws a grenade, solving the zombie problem, but also causing the plane crash. Most planes don't fly very well with a gaping hole in the fuselage!
5. What first-aid no-no does Gerry consider doing when he awakens after the crash?

Answer: He considers removing the piece of metal in his side.

Since Gerry knows he and Segen are heading to the World Health Organization facility, and that there is every chance of receiving a higher level of care once there, he does not remove the metal skewering his side.

Removing small foreign objects from the body in the process of cleaning or flushing a wound is OK, but this does not include the removal of large and/or deeply embedded objects (like Gerry's chunk of metal, bullets, etc.). Only remove foreign objects when you can do so without causing further damage.
6. Why does Gerry's family leave the Argus?

Answer: Gerry is believed dead; only familes of vital personnel are allowed on board.

The commander of the Argus manipulates Gerry into going on the mission to South Korea by threatening to kick his family off the ship if he does not go. After 48 hours of not hearing from Gerry, the commander has Gerry's family removed from the ship, despite the efforts of Thierry Umutoni, who had promised Gerry that his family would be cared for.
7. When the World Health Organization doctor first asks Gerry, "Now, why did you come here? What do you need from us?", what is Gerry's response?

Answer: "Your worst disease."

Gerry believes that the infected pass by any diseased prey animal. He puts this together with what the virologist told him about the greatest serial killer of all, Mother Nature: "She leaves... crumbs. Now the hard part, while you spend a decade in school, is seeing the crumbs for the clues they are. Sometimes the thing you thought was the most brutal aspect of the virus turns out to be the chink in its armor."

Gerry believes he has found that "chink". He wants to test his theory by infecting himself with a deadly, though curable, pathogen.
8. The pathogen locker is in B-wing. Why is this a problem for the party?

Answer: B-wing is occupied by zombies.

The W.H.O chief virologist, Dr. Spellman, became infected while working on samples of the virus... in B-wing. Now all B-wing personnel are infected. They are dormant, mostly just standing in one place, waiting for stimuli (noise, smells, or movement).
9. What four items do Gerry and his team take as weapons on their foray into B-wing?

Answer: pistol, fire axe, crowbar, baseball bat

When offered the choice between the bat and the fire axe, Gerry chooses the fire axe. He also refuses to take the pistol because of the potential noise. Segen doesn't hesitate; she already has the bat, but takes the pistol, too.
10. In B-wing, what noise finally causes the infected to chase them?

Answer: The W.H.O. doctor hitting a metal cabinet with his crowbar

The group causes all of these noises, but the zombies start chasing them because of the noise of the crowbar striking the cabinet.
11. After killing his first zombie in B-wing, why does Gerry almost get killed by the second one?

Answer: The crowbar gets stuck in the first zombie's skull.

Gerry starts out with the fire axe as his weapon, but he has to use it to prop open a squeaky door. The W.H.O. doctor gives Gerry the crowbar when they have to split up.

When set upon by a zombie, Gerry follows good zombie-killer protocol and goes for the head, but the crowbar gets stuck in the zombie's skull. As the second zombie approaches, Gerry frantically tries to free the weapon, and succeeds just in time.
12. What kind of lock is on the pathogen locker?

Answer: Numeric keypad

Gerry is about to break the locker's glass door, which would attract attention and then leave him vulnerable to attack, when the wall-mounted phone rings. It's the female W.H.O. doctor, calling with the door code. He gets into the locker just in time, shutting the door on a determined zombie. The zombie waits for the unarmed Gerry outside the door.
13. What does Gerry do right before injecting himself with the pathogen?

Answer: He holds up a sign to the survelliance camera.

The sign reads, "TELL MY FAMILY I LOVE THEM". Then Gerry injects himself and begins to wait.
14. Do we ever find out what it was that Gerry infected himself with?

Answer: No

The film shows the female W.H.O. doctor giving Gerry an injection before he and Segen leave the W.H.O. facility, but it is never revealed what it was he was infected with.
15. The other members of the B-wing foray party race back to safety. They get through the door in the nick of time, and bar the door against the infected that pile up on the other side. How does Gerry distract the zombies away from the door so he can rejoin the W.H.O. doctors and Segen?

Answer: He rigs a soda machine to drop a column of cans.

As the zombies run toward the sound, they flow past Gerry like river water around a boulder. This is additional proof that Gerry has discovered the virus's Achilles heel.
