Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What number one album was produced by ex-Chic guitarist Nile Rodgers and included the Rose Royce cover song "Love Don't Live Here Anymore"? Any fan of the "Material Girl" should easily guess this album.

Answer: Like A Virgin

Although Madonna's self titled debut put her on the musical map, it was the release of "Like A Virgin" that made her a bona fide superstar. This album spent three weeks at number one and included four top ten singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
2. What act featured a singer born with the name Georgios Kyrriacos Panayiotou?

Answer: Wham!

Wham! was comprised of Georgios Kyrriacos Panayiotou, better known as George Michael, and Andrew Ridgely. These two flamboyantly dressed guys hit number one with the album "Make It Big" in 1985. The album spent three weeks at number one and spawned three number one hit singles ("Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go", "Careless Whisper" and "Everything She Wants"). George Michael went on to huge solo success while Andrew became the answer to countless trivia questions.
3. What ex-member of Creedence Clearwater Revival had a number one album in 1985?

Answer: John Fogerty

John Fogerty released "Centerfield" in January of 1985 and it peaked at number one for a week late March. The album's title track peaked at number 44 on the singles chart while the single "The Old Man Down the Road" hit number 10. Here's a little CCR trivia, the band was originally known as the Golliwogs in the late 1950s before Fogerty changed the name.
4. What 1985 number one album won the Grammy for Pop Album of the Year in 1986?

Answer: No Jacket Required

Phil Collins, ex-drummer and lead singer of the prog rock band Genesis, hit it big with "No Jacket Required". The album debuted at number one on Billboard's album chart and remained there for seven weeks. Collins also won another Grammy for Male Vocal that year.

The album was a smashing success and featured the number one single "One More Night". All other incorrect answers were Grammy Award winners, but in different years.
5. Which of the following artists did not contribute a single to the USA for Africa album "We Are the World"?

Answer: Cyndi Lauper

Although Lauper appeared on the "We Are the World" single, she did not contribute a single to the album. This album, released to combat hunger in Africa, was considered to be the epitome of music activism. The title track was written by Quincy Jones and Michael Jackson. The album racked up four Grammy Awards.
6. What soundtrack from a television show went to number one in 1985?

Answer: Miami Vice

The soundtrack from the television show "Miami Vice" spent eleven weeks at number one. The title track, composed by Jan Hammer, reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart as well. The soundtrack featured hits by Phil Collins, Glen Frey, Tina Turner and Chaka Khan.
7. What video was an MTV favorite, had a guest vocal performed by Sting and was created by computer animation?

Answer: "Money for Nothing" by Dire Straits

The fact that MTV played the video nonstop during the late 1980s should have helped you remember the haunting lyric provided by Sting ("I want my MTV" repeated over and over...). The album "Brothers in Arms" spent nine weeks at number one beginning August 31. This album also picked up a Grammy Award for Engineered Recording.
8. What album contained the hit "Summer of '69"?

Answer: Reckless

The Bryan Adams album "Reckless" spent two weeks on top of the chart and featured the hits "Heaven", "Run to You" and the duet with Tina Turner "It's Only Love". Adams was nominated for a Grammy for Male Vocalist during the 1985 Grammy's, but lost out to Don Henley.
9. What American, Vancouver based band released a number one album in 1985, an album that many would consider a comeback effort?

Answer: Heart

The clue here is that only Heart is from Seattle, the other bands are well known to be from other U.S. cities. Heart released the album "Heart", their most popular effort since 1978's "Dog and Butterfly", in June of 1985. Heart certainly caught on quick to the MTV era of rock music.

Their videos gave the MTV viewers lots to look at with the tight corsets, big hair and plenty of seductive shots of the pouting Nancy Wilson. The album included the hits "These Dreams', "Never" and "What About Love".
10. What movie soundtrack reached number one in 1985?

Answer: Beverly Hills Cop

Although all these soundtracks came out around the same time, only the compilation album from "The Beverly Hills Cop" reached number one. An interesting fact about this album is that all songs on the album were not included in the film. The soundtrack spent two weeks on top of the charts, won the Grammy for Composition for Motion Picture/TV and had three top twenty singles. Artists contributing to the soundtrack include Patti LaBelle, The Pointer Sisters and Harold Faltermeyer.
