Answer: Whitney Houston

Whitney Houston released her self titled debut album March 8, 1985 and it reached number one on the charts exactly one year later, where it stayed 14 weeks, longer than any other album that year. The album quickly became the highest selling album by a female artist and also was the first album ever by a female to debut at number one on the charts. The album, "One Down" was a mixture of funk, jazz and avant garde experimental music.

A true departure from the pop sound that made her famous.

Answer: Jon Bongiovi

Although this was the third Bon Jovi album, this is the effort that really propelled the band to superstardom. Bon Jovi did have some help in the early days though, Jon Bon Jovi's cousin was Tony Bongiovi, and he owned the famed Power Station recording studio in New York. Bon Jovi received lots of session and recording time as a result of his acquaintance, assistance that led Jon to record his first single "Runaway" which appeared on the debut album.

Boston's long awaited "Third Stage" reached number one on the charts on November 1, 1986 and remained there for four weeks. The single "Amanda" was number one for two weeks, and was Boston's first number one single. The "Third Stage" album is also the first album to be certified gold in the compact disc format. Prior to this album, all other gold and platinum records were certified in the long play record fomat.

The album spent two weeks on top of the charts. Rounding out a great year for Sade, she won the Best New Artist Grammy in 1986.

Mr. Mister was the brainchild of Richard Page and Steve George, two childhood friends from Phoenix. After moving to Los Angeles, the two found work as session musicians working with artists ranging from REO Speedwagon, Toto, Kenny Loggins and even The Village People. Mr. Mister found success on "Welcome to the Real World", their second album.

The album produced two number one singles in "Kyrie" and "Broken Wings". The album spent one week at number one.

Not only that , but every additional studio album released with Hagar as singer also reached number one. A triumph for Roth though is that the best selling Van Halen is the debut album, selling over 10 million copies.
