Answer: Addicted to Love

Although he was born in England, Robert Palmer did a lot of his growing up on the island of Malta. From his album "Riptide', "Addicted to Love" was his first number one solo hit. The song's success was greatly assisted by the video that was filmed the song, which featured a group of sexily dressed beautiful women.
2. What was the #9 hit for the year 1986? "In the burning heart, just about to burst, There's a quest for answers, an unquenchable thirst. In the darkest night, rising like a spire, In the burning heart, the unmistakable fire."

Answer: Burning Heart

Survivor had a huge hit with "Eye of the Tiger", a song that was written for "Rocky III". "Burning Heart", written for "Rocky IV", was not nearly as successful, although it was probably their second biggest hit. The band slowly slipped into decline after this hit, eventually breaking up in 1989.
3. What was the #8 hit for the year 1986? "The wind blows hard against this mountainside, Across the sea into my soul. It reaches into where I cannot hide, Setting my feet upon the road. My heart is old, it holds my memories, My body burns a gemlike flame. Somewhere between the soul and soft machine, Is where I find myself again."

Answer: Kyrie

The first album released by Christian rock group Mr. Mister was not a huge success. Their second album, "Welcome to the Real World" was much more successful, with two number one hits. "Kyrie", or "Kyrie elesion" is a Greek expression used in a Roman Catholic mass that means "God have mercy".
4. What was the #7 hit for the year 1986? "I can't understand it why you want to hurt me, After all the things I've done for you. I buy you champagne and roses and diamonds on your finger. (Diamonds on your finger) Still you hang out all night, what am I to do? My girl wants to party all the time."

Answer: Party All the Time

At the risk of offending all you die-hard Eddie Murphy fans, it pains me to see this song on the year's top ten list. Eddie Murphy first rose to fame during his four year stint on "Saturday Night Live". Since then he has had a very successful career as both a comedian and an actor.

It amazes me that someone who was known for his particularly vulgar humour has come to be a bit of a specialist in movies aimed at children!
5. What was the #6 hit for the year 1986? "I say a prayer with every heart beat. I fall in love whenever we meet. I'm asking you what you know about these things. How will I know if he's thinking of me? I try to phone but I'm too shy (can't speak). Falling in love is all bitter sweet . This love is strong why do I feel weak?"

Answer: How Will I Know

Trained in gospel singing, Whitney Houston was the first singer to achieve an amazing 7 consecutive number one hits. Her voice is so wonderful that she even scored a top 20 hit with her version of "The Star Spangled Banner" which was recorded at a Super Bowl game.
6. What was the #5 hit for 1986? "Take these _____________, And learn to fly again, And learn to live so free. And when we hear the voices sing, The book of love will open up, And let us in."

Answer: Broken Wings

"Broken Wings" was another number one hit for Mr. Mister from their second album, "Welcome to the Real World". The group chose their name after they had already begun recording their first album. The name comes from the fact that they often called each other nicknames that started with the word Mr.
7. What is the #4 hit for the year 1986? "I miss you and me. Is it done and over this time? Have we really changed our minds? But it's other's love, All the feelings that we used to share. I refused to believe, That you don't care."

Answer: I Miss You

"I Miss You" was a huge hit for Klymaxx, an all girl band who wrote their own songs. The band was drawn together in '79 by drummer Bernadette Cooper, and included Cheryl Cooley, Lynn Malsby, Lorena Porter Shelby and Joyce Irby. Although I recognize the name of the group, I have no recollection of this song, even when I listened to a clip.
8. What was the #3 hit for the year 1986? "I'm ____________. Why did it end this way? ______________. This wasn't how it was supposed to be. _____________. I wish that we could do it all again."

Answer: On My Own

Michael McDonald and Patti Labelle had a huge number one hit with this beautiful duet that was written by Burt Bacharach. McDonald first rose to fame when he joined the Doobie Brothers and scored hits such as "What a Fool Believes". Labelle sung with a number of groups before cutting out on her own in 1975 for a more successful solo career.
9. What was the #2 hit for the year 1986? "I had a dream, I had an awesome dream. People in the park, playing games in the dark, And what they played was a masquerade, And from behind of walls of doubt, A voice was crying out."

Answer: Say You Say Me

From the soundtrack of the movie "White Nights", starring Mikhail Baryshnikov and Gregory Hines, "Say You Say Me" was a number one hit for Lionel Richie. Formerly with The Commodores, Richie had 13 top ten hits between going solo in 1981, and 1987. Five of those hits were number ones.
10. What was the #1 hit for the year 1986? "Keep smiling, keep shining, Knowing you can always count on me, for sure, That's what friends are for. For good times and bad times, I'll be on your side forever more..."

Answer: That's What Friends Are For

This Grammy award winning song was released by Dionne and Friends, with all proceeds from sales going to the American Foundation for AIDS Research. The 'friends' were Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight and Elton John, and millions of dollars were raised to fight the disease.

This quiz marks the last in the upward progression of my BRI series (although there will be a couple of more from the 60s). We are reaching a point where songs on the lists are either unfamiliar to me, or are songs that I don't particularly care for. Thank you to all who have played these quizzes, and shared with me what the songs in them meant in their lives.
