Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What band was known for smashing their instruments?

Answer: The Who

It was very, very unusual for the time and hampered them financially for a few years. Later, Jimi Hendrix copied this move.
2. At which location did The Doors actually form after a chance meeting of Jim Morrison and Ray Manzarek?

Answer: Venice Beach

This was after they had left UCLA, where they did not know each other well. They happened to meet on Venice Beach, and the rest is history. A good Doors tribute band sometimes plays in venues on the boardwalk there to this day.
3. What instrument does Steve Howe play in the beginning of "Wondrous Stories"?

Answer: Portugese 10 string guitar

Such a beautiful instrument, by my favorite guitarist ever.
4. What is very unusual about 1969's "Seattle Pop Festival"?

Answer: No one filmed any portion of it at all

It was held in Woodinville, and was almost entirely peaceful, with very few incidents, typical of the nice Northwest people.
5. Which band was known to not use drugs?

Answer: Paul Revere and the Raiders

Few bands did not use drugs, by the late 1960s, at least. Paul Revere and the Raiders still tour today.
6. Which of these played at all three of the "major" 1960s festivals- Monterey, Woodstock, and Altamont?

Answer: Jefferson Airplane

Jefferson Airplane was also one of the highest paid acts of the era.
7. What is the unusual guitar the Hollies used on many live versions of "Stop, Stop, Stop"?

Answer: Vox Phantom

Many prefer this to the banjo of the studio version and some live versions.
8. Which of these declined an invitation to Woodstock?

Answer: The Byrds

The Byrds did not want to play, because they thought that they might not get paid. Many believe that outdoor theme festivals, then or now, should be free, with no compensation to the artists, as opposed to concerts and other venues.
9. For which band did Rick Wakeman play, just before joining Yes?

Answer: The Strawbs

And the rest is history. Classic band, classic keyboardist.
10. Who was the other lead singer besides Keith Relf, in the original lineup of Renaissance?

Answer: His sister

This lineup, including Jane Relf, the sister of Keith, did not last long- about one year.
