Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Beatles crooned which song that featured the lyrics: "Suddenly, I'm not half the man I used to be, There's a shadow hanging over me."

Answer: Yesterday

"Yesterday", an acoustic ballad written by Lennon-McCartney, was recorded by The Beatles for their 1965 album "Help!". Although the writing was credited to Lennon-McCartney, it is claimed that McCartney alone wrote the song. The music was written before the lyrics and for a time, the working title was "Scrambled Eggs".

The song met some resistance from other band members and also their record producer. Singer Chris Farlowe was offered the song but rejected it, saying it was "too soft". Eventually The Beatles recorded the ballad and it made the coveted Number One spot on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1965.
2. "Where did you come from, baby? How did you know, I needed you?" Which 1975 song had Hot Chocolate believing in miracles?

Answer: You Sexy Thing

Penned by lead singer Errol Brown, "You Sexy Thing" reached number two on the UK Singles Chart in 1975 and has featured in many movies, including the 1997 hit "The Full Monty". It was originally released as a 'B' side, but later remixed and released as an 'A' side when it became the group's biggest and most well-known song.
3. Not quite the Chinese Zodiac, but a hit for Al Stewart in 1976. "She comes out of the sun in a silk dress running, Like a watercolor in the rain, Don't bother asking for explanations, She'll just tell you that she came"

Answer: Year of the Cat

"Year of the Cat" is the title track off Stewart's 1976 album which he recorded in London's famous Abbey Road studios. Co-written by Stewart and Peter Wood, the song became Stewart's signature song and most well-known single although it wasn't quite as successful as his subsequent release "Time Passages".
4. Carly Simon was the quintessential woman scorned when she released which song with these lyrics? "You walked into the party Like you were walking onto a yacht Your hat strategically dipped below one eye Your scarf it was apricot"

Answer: You're So Vain

Released in 1972, the song caused worldwide speculation; everyone wanted to know who Simon had written the song about. Initially it was thought to be about Mick Jagger, but in 1989 Simon said it was "a little bit about Warren Beatty", but also said it was about men in general. In 2007, Beatty himself said "Let's be honest. That song was about me."

"You're So Vain", Simon's biggest hit, was ranked number 72 on Billboard's Greatest Hits of All Time and is considered to be her signature song.
5. "I feel like this is the beginning, Though I've loved you for a million years, And if I thought our love was ending, I'd find myself drowning in my own tears" Stevie Wonder found himself with a Grammy after releasing which ballad in 1973?

Answer: You Are the Sunshine of My Life

Written and produced by Stevie Wonder for his album "Talking Book", "You Are the Sunshine of My Life" won the Grammy for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance in 1974.
6. "Young man, there's no need to feel down. I said, young man, pick yourself off the ground." Which 1978 Village People song not only became a hit for the group, but a gay anthem as well?

Answer: YMCA

"YMCA" was the only single released off the band's 1978 album "Cruisin'" and became the group's biggest hit. It reached Number One in the UK and simultaneously reached the Number Two spot in the US. The song has sold over 10 million copies worldwide since its release.

The dance and its distinctive arm movements first appeared on Dick Clark's "American Bandstand" in 1979 with the audience performing the movements while the band sang. After seeing this, lead singer and founding member Victor Willis admitted the song deserved a place in their routine.
7. "You've got a cute way of talking You got the better of me Just snap your fingers and I'm walking Like a dog hanging on your lead I'm in a spin you know Shaking on string you know Which 1976 song had Leo Sayer in a Spin?

Answer: You Make Me Feel like Dancing

"You Make Me Feel Like Dancing", from Sayer's album "Endless Flight" album, became his first US Number One. It also won him a Grammy in 1978 for "Best R&B Song".

Leo Sayer was a regular performer on Australia's "Countdown" and the clip of his live performance on the show was often shown instead of the studio clip. Sayer also toured as part of the "Countdown Spectacular" in 2006.
8. "I need love, love Ooh, ease my mind And I need to find time Someone to call mine" What advice did Phil Collins's mama give him in his 1982 cover version of a previous hit by The Supremes?

Answer: You Can't Hurry Love

Collins recorded his version of "You Can't Hurry Love" for his 1982 album "Hello, I Must be Going!". Although he had recorded covers of other songs previously, this was the first one he released as a single.

"The Supremes" released their version in 1966 where it made Number One on the US Billboard Hot 100 and the Billboard R&B Singles Chart.
9. "In the town where I was born Lived a man who sailed to sea." Where did The Beatles live a life of ease in 1966?

Answer: Yellow Submarine

Featuring lead vocals by Ringo Starr, "Yellow Submarine" was penned by Paul McCartney but credited to the song writing team of Lennon-McCartney. It stayed on the charts for 13 weeks and made the Number One spot on every major British music chart at the time. The song was released as a single, coupled with "Eleanor Rigby".

In 1968 an animated film, "Yellow Submarine", was released with the hit as the title song.

Popular thought has it that Thunderbird 4 (from Gerry Anderson's TV series "Thunderbirds") was modelled after the song, however the series was first aired in 1964, two years before The Beatles released "Yellow Submarine".
10. "It's a little bit funny this feeling inside I'm not one of those who can easily hide I don't have much money but boy if I did I'd buy a big house where we both could live" Reggie Dwight may have claimed that he doesn't have much money in this 1970 ballad, but it certainly earned Elton John a packet.

Answer: Your Song

John and long-time collaborator, Bernie Taupin composed many songs while living together and John said this song was written in a day. The 27th October 1969 to be exact. Apparently Taupin wrote the lyrics over breakfast and Elton John composed the music in ten minutes later in the day. He claimed once in an interview that the song was one of his favourites and "I don't think I have written a love song as good since".

Originally the song was released as the 'B' side to "Take Me to the Pilot", but it was re-released as the 'A' side after radio disc jockeys preferred "Your Song". A wise move as the song reached Number One on both the UK and the US Music Charts.
