Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which genre best describes the band Triumph's musical stylings? Fellow Canadians Rush fit in there as well.

Answer: Hard rock power trio

The original incarnation of the band had four members but two of them left early in the band's career and were replaced by a single guitarist/vocalist. This would become the band's lineup for the next 15 years. Following a contentious split in 1991, the band didn't speak for nearly 20 years, but have since reconciled.
2. Which location, on the shores of Lake Ontario, does the band hail from?

Answer: Mississauga

Considered a suburb of Toronto, its name can be translated "Those at the great river mouth". Members of the group have continued to support the local community through volunteer work, contributions to local arts, and charitable donations. In 2011 the city named a street "Triumph Lane" in honor of the band.
3. Triumph's first album, the eponymous 'Triumph' was released in what year? It happens to coincide with America's bicentennial.

Answer: 1976

This release didn't receive much airplay outside of Canada, but it did achieve Gold certification in 1979. The album was remastered in 1995 and retitled to 'In The Beginning'. The original cover art featured the band shown through a burning ring. On the reissue the cover was a rock being split in half by a lightning bolt.
4. Triumph scored nine Billboard 200 albums during their career. What was their most successful album, reaching a peak position of number 23 on that chart on 11/21/1981?

Answer: Allied Forces

The album contained their fourth Billboard Hot 100 hit, 'Magic Power'. "Fight The Good Fight" and "Say Goodbye" also charted on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart.
5. Speaking of the Billboard Hot 100, Triumph landed six songs on the chart. What was their highest charting single, hitting number 27 on 11/8/1986? It comes from 'The Sport of Kings' album.

Answer: Somebody's Out There

The accompanying video also saw significant airplay on MTV. Triumph was not known for putting out videos of high production value as most of their offerings were live performance clips, but "Somebody's Out There" did feature shots of the guys hamming it up a bit cut in between shots of them playing the song.
6. The band were headliners at which 1983 musical festival?

Answer: US

Give yourself a gold star if you knew that Steve Wozniak, cofounder of Apple, created the US festival. Wozniak was a fan of the band and asked them personally to play. Half of their set featured songs from the "Allied Forces" album.
7. Triumph were nominated in the Group of the Year category four times for which award that is the Canadian equivalent of the American Grammys?

Answer: The JUNO

No wins for these guys, but they did receive a number of other honors in the 2000s including induction into the Canadian Music & Broadcast Industry Hall of Fame, the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, and Canada's Walk of Fame. Both individually and as a band, Triumph received many awards for philanthropic activities.

Some of these include the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for Community Service, the Mississauga Board of Trade's Sam McCallion Award, and a star on the Mississauga Music Walk of Fame.
8. Triumph has received how many gold and platinum album awards? It's equivalent to scoring four touchdowns but missing one extra point in American Football.

Answer: 27

Overall, Triumph have received 18 gold and nine platinum album awards in Canada and the USA. Their 1977 release, "Rock & Roll Machine", became the group's first 2x Platinum selling album in 2013. Their influence goes beyond record sales. Gil Moore trains engineers and sound technicians at Metalworks Studios in Mississauga. Triumph also donated royalties from one million units of the song "Magic Power" to support the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Science and Juno Award.
9. Who were the three members of Triumph during their most active era (1975-1991)?

Answer: Rik Emmett, Gil Moore, Mike Levine

Rik Emmett left the band in 1991, but they would reunite in 2007. All three members were known for contributing to, or collaborating on, the band's music. Emmett and Moore often shared lead singing duties. As their music became more complex it required an increasing number of touring musicians to recreate their sound live.
10. Which musician was recruited to join the band in 1992, following the departure of their lead guitarist?

Answer: Phil X

His birth name is Theofilos Xenidis. He has also played for Aldo Nova and replaced Richie Sambora in Bon Jovi. He only recorded one album with the band, "The Edge of Excess", which did not chart and is widely regarded as the band's poorest effort.
