Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Karma Police', 1997
Answer: Radiohead
From 1997's 'Ok Computer', 'Karma Police' began as an in-joke with the band, stating if something bad happens, the 'karma police' will come after you. The song goes on about insanity and stress in life, as singer Thom Yorke would describe it as 'schizophrenic'. The music video shows a car slowly making its way in the darkness, occasionally the camera turns back to show Thom Yorke looking dazed as he sings the chorus. After a while, its revealed the car is pursuing a man, and just as the driver reverses to go after the man for a final dash, the burly fellow drops a lit match and the fuel leak from the car reaches the vehicle as it tries to escape the blaze to no avail.
Director Jonathan Glazer originally pitched the video to shock rock artist Marilyn Manson, but got turned down.
2. 'Only Happy When it Rains', 1995
Answer: Garbage
Sarcastic, dry and dreary is the best way to describe 'Only Happy When it Rains', Garbage's third single of their self titled debut album. Tired of the grunge scene that began to wane in the mid 90s, Garbage wrote this song as a parody of the bleak lyrics often heard in other alternative rock groups of the period, while admitting that they loved listening to songs that weren't too happy in nature. Come to think of it, so do I.
3. 'Beauty on the Fire', 2002
Answer: Natalie Imbruglia
Natalie Imbruglia's third single from 'White Lillies Island' is the sweeping 'Beauty on the Fire'. The video, filmed in Hawaii, shows Natalie and a slew of beach goers running into the sea, finding a hidden area beneath the waters, and upon entering begin to party as the song goes into full bloom.
A relatively minor success in the Australian ARIA and the UK Singles chart, it peaked at number 78 and number 26 respectively, while failing to chart in the US.
4. 'I've Got a Feeling', 1997
Answer: Ivy
Ivy are a dream pop band, and 'I've Got a Feeling' is the first single from the album 'Apartment Life'. The music video shows the band and other individuals taking photos in a stylized photo booth.

5. 'Beautiful Day', 2000
Answer: U2
U2's comeback in 2000 saw them release the inspirational 'Beautiful Day' from the album 'All That You Can't Leave Behind'. The song tells of losing everything in your life, yet finding joy in it, cherishing what you truly have, which is life itself. The music video was shot at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris, where lead singer Bono wanders the terminal, having playful interactions with waiting passengers interspersed with scenes of the band performing at the runway and within the terminal.
6. 'Six Days', 2002.
Answer: DJ Shadow
Hip hop artist DJ Shadow sampled 'Six Day War' by Colonel Bagshot to create this brooding track, accompanied by a music video directed by acclaimed Hong Kong film director Wong Kar Wai.
Inspired by the line 'Tomorrow never comes until it's too late', the video shows the attempts of a man trying to erase the memories of his cheating girlfriend, only to realize it can never be fully erased.
'Six Days' was also remixed for the soundtrack of 'The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift', in a collaboration with rapper Mos Def.
7. 'Man! I Feel Like a Woman!', 1997
Answer: Shania Twain
From 1997's 'Come On Over', the album that brought Shania Twain to the world stage to become a country crossover star, comes 'Man! I Feel Like a Woman!'. Released as a single in 1999, it became a global smash with its racy music video which was a tribute to Robert Palmer's infamous 'Addicted to Love' video, with the roles reversed; Shania being surrounded by buff, clueless looking male models who didn't put much effort into playing their instruments.
The appeal was clear, peaking as high as number 23 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number three on the Australian ARIA chart.
8. 'Kiss Me', 1997
Answer: Sixpence None the Richer
Reaching as far as number two on the Billboard Hot 100, 'Kiss Me' gave Sixpence None the Richer their major breakthrough. The song's great legacy was with its longevity on the charts, staying in the top ten for 16 weeks and even exceeding in sales some number one singles in 1998.
'Kiss Me' was heavily used in film and TV, notably in 'She's All That' and 'Dawson's Creek'.
9. 'Closer', 2008
Answer: Ne-Yo
RnB and Hip Hop artist Ne-Yo danced and grooved in this number; 'Closer' is one of his biggest hits, going as far as number seven in the Billboard Hot 100 and the top spot on the UK Singles chart and Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs. It was the first single off of 'Year of the Gentleman', and was used for advertising for retail company Overstock.com.
10. 'Back at One', 1999
Answer: Brian McKnight
'Back at One' was Brian McKnight's biggest hit, staying at number two for eight weeks straight, being held back by Santana's 'Smooth'. The ballad was accompanied by an impressive music video, which sees Brian wandering from a plane crash in a corn field, slowly walking the streets and eventually to his home, where his wife tearfully waits at the phone after realizing Brian was in the plane when it crashed.
The video was almost rejected by Brian himself and the crew, uncertain of how the scenes would play out, especially the corn field scene which Brian commented didn't look that good on the planning sketches.
