Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start with the quiz title. Who had a hit record with "All She Wants to Do Is Dance"?

Answer: Don Henley

Don Henley's recording of "All She Wants To Do Is Dance" peaked at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in March, 1985. The song was written by Danny Kortchmar, considered by many to be one of the architects of the singer-songwriter genre so prevalent in the 1970s. Kortchmar also played guitar on the session.

It followed "The Boys of Summer" as the second single from Henley's second solo album "Building The Perfect Beast".
2. The Drifters and Orleans both had hit records with the same title but the songs were completely different. What was that title?

Answer: Dance With Me

"Dance With Me" was the second Top 40 hit for The Drifters, peaking at number 15 on the Billboard pop chart in November, 1959. It featured Ben E. King on the lead vocal. Orleans recorded their song in 1974 and released it in July, 1975 from their third studio album "Let There Be Music".
3. Back in the 1950s, who had a hit with "Dance With Me Henry"?

Answer: Georgia Gibbs

"Dance With Me Henry" was a sanitized version of the song "Work With Me Annie" by Hank Ballard and The Midnighters. The Hank Ballard song was considered too risqué for mainstream radio due to its sexual overtones. It was common practice in the 50s for white artists and groups to cover songs by black artists because the original versions did not get radio play on the majority of stations around the country. Etta James also covered the song but it was the Georgia Gibbs version that reached number one on the Billboard pop chart in May, 1955 and remained there for three weeks.
4. What artist scored with "I Want To Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)"?

Answer: Whitney Houston

"I Want To Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)" was Whitney Houston's fourth consecutive number one record in the US. It was the first single release from her second studio album "Whitney". It debuted at number 38 on the Billboard chart, her highest debut to date. Future "American Idol" judge Randy Jackson played synthesized bass on the recording.
5. Several artists have covered "Do You Want To Dance?" but who had the original hit?

Answer: Bobby Freeman

Bobby Freeman wrote and recorded "Do You Want To Dance" in 1958. It peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot 100 pop chart and number two on their R&B chart. Among the many covers of the song was a slow ballad version by Bette Midler which ended up being the subject of a lawsuit by Midler against the Ford Motor Company. Ford used a Bette Midler "sound-alike" singing the song in one of their commercials.

She won the suit and an injunction banning the commercial from being shown again on TV.
6. In which movie did The Beatles sing "I'm Happy Just To Dance With You"?

Answer: A Hard Days Night

George Harrison sang the lead vocal on "I'm Happy Just To Dance With You". Although John Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote the song, both were critical of it. McCartney referred to it as a "formula song" and Lennon, in interviews, said "I never would have sung it myself".

The song was recorded on March 4, 1964 and released on June 26th as part of the soundtrack for "A Hard Days Night". As the flip side of "I'll Cry Instead" is only reached number 95 on the Billboard Hot 100. In the film there is also a brief jazz piano version of the song, played during rehearsals for a television appearance by the group.
7. What female country artist had a crossover hit with "I Hope You Dance"?

Answer: Lee Ann Womack

Two versions of "I Hope You Dance" were released: one with background vocals by country group "Sons of The Desert" and the other with more "pop" sounding vocals. The co-writers of the song, Mark D. Sanders and Tia Sellers, later wrote a self-help book with the same title which included a CD of an acoustic version by Womack as well as her introduction. Irish singer-songwriter Ronan Keating covered the song in 2004.

It peaked at number two on the UK Singles Chart.
8. Anne Murray had a big hit with "Could I Have This Dance?" But what movie soundtrack is that song from?

Answer: Urban Cowboy

"Could I Have This Dance" was written by Wayland Holyfield and Bob House. Anne Murray's recording was released in August, 1980. It was chosen for the soundtrack of the movie "Urban Cowboy" and used in the scene where John Travolta's character Bud had his first dance with his new bride Sissy (played by Debra Winger).

The wedding reception and dance scenes were filmed at Gilley's in Pasadena, Texas.
9. Frank Sinatra recorded a song called "The Last Dance". But what disco diva had a big hit with a different song with that title?

Answer: Donna Summer

"The Last Dance" was from the soundtrack of "Thank God It's Friday". It won the Academy Award for Best Original Song as well as a Golden Globe for the same. It also peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1978. Actor Greg Evigan and the female Asian duo Pink Lady covered the song on an episode of the TV show "Pink Lady and Jeff". Donna Summer herself performed the song in a karaoke scene on the show "Family Matters", portraying Steve Urkel's "Aunt Oona from Altoona".
10. One of the signature songs of this popular country artist is "The Dance". Who is that artist?
