Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which album is NOT by a band that is part of The Big Four of Thrash Metal?

Answer: The Years of Decay

The Big Four consist of the four most commercially successful thrash metal bands: Megadeth, Metallica, Slayer and Anthrax.

"Divine Intervention" is Slayer's sixth studio album and the first without the original drummer, Dave Lombardo. It was released in 1994.

"St. Anger" is Metallica's eight studio album released in 2003. It's commonly credited as the worst Metallica album and it is. It's one of the worst albums by popular bands for sure. Just unlistenable.

"Worship Music" is Anthrax's tenth studio album. It was released in 2011.

"The Years of Decay" is the fourth album by New Jersey thrashers, Overkill. It was released in 1989 and it's one of the milestones of thrash metal. It's a masterpiece.
2. Which band's debut album's release date is the latest, of these?

Answer: Annihilator

Death Angel is an amazing band from Concord, LA. They released their debut album, "The Ultra-Violence" in 1987. All of the members were under 20 at the recording; the drummer, Andy Galeon was only fourteen years old.

Nuclear Assault is from New York City. They released their debut, "Game Over" in 1986.

Testament is also from Bay Area, LA, like Exodus. They released their debut in 1987, titled "The Legacy".

Annihilator is the biggest Canadian thrash metal band. They released their debut in 1989, titled "Alice in Hell".
3. Which song's intro features a nearly eight-second-long scream?

Answer: Slayer- "Angel of Death"

"Angel of Death" is the first song on Slayer's third studio album, "Reign in Blood".

The lyrics were written by Jeff Hanneman, the guitarist of the band, and are based on the experiments of the Nazi scientist, Josef Mengele, who is known as the "Angel of Death". The song talks about the human experiments Mengele did in Auschwitz, during the World War II.

It's one of Slayer's coolest songs.
4. Gary Holt is the long-time guitarist of Exodus. In which other thrash metal band did he play?

Answer: Slayer

Gary Holt was born in 1964, Richmond. He joined Exodus in 1981 as the replacement of the tragically passed away Tom Agnello. He played on every Exodus album.

He joined Slayer in 2013 to replace Jeff Hanneman, who passed away in the same year. He played the guitar on Slayer's final studio album, the 2015 "Repentless".
5. Which legendary thrash metal album's release date was NOT in 1990?

Answer: Dark Angel- "Time Does Not Heal"

"Rust in Peace" is Megadeth's fourth studio album.

"Seasons in the Abyss" is Slayer's fifth studio album and the last to feature drummer Dave Lombardo for a while.

"Impact Is Imminent" is Exodus' fourth studio album.

"Time Does Not Heal" was released in 1991. It's Dark Angel's fourth and final studio album.
6. Which thrash metal band is NOT from Germany?

Answer: Artillery

Kreator was formed in 1982, Essen. They are one of the German Big Four, alongside with Destruction, Sodom and Tankard.

Destruction was formed in 1982.

Tankard was formed in Frankfurt am Main, in 1982.

Artillery is from Denmark.
7. Which band's singer doesn't play on any other instruments?

Answer: Overkill

Metallica's singer is James Hetfield, who also plays the rhythm guitar in the songs.

Nuclear Assault's singer is John Connelly, who is the guitarist of the band too. He is also a high school teacher.

Sodom's singer is Thomas Such, or better known as Tom Angelripper. He is the bassist of the band.

Overkill's frontman is Bobby Ellsworth, or better known an Bobby Blitz. He only sings.
8. Municipal Waste is one of the finest new thrash metal bands. What's the name of their most famous album?

Answer: The Art of Partying

It's their third studio album, released in 2007.

Municipal Waste is a crossover thrash metal band. They are from Richmond, Virginia. They were formed in 2001, by vocalist Tony Foresta and guitarist Ryan Waste.
9. Probably, most people think of thrash metal when we mention moshpits. Which band of the Big Four has a song about moshpits?

Answer: Anthrax

"Caught in a Mosh" is the second song of Anthrax's third studio album, "Among the Living". The inspiration for the song came from an incident, when Ian Scott's (the guitarist of Anthrax) guitar tech was injured in a moshpit. When he was asked what happened, he replied: "I got caught in a mosh".
10. At the beginning of Overkill's song, "Elimination" there's the same riff as another thrash metal anthem. Which song is that?

Answer: Metallica- "Master of Puppets"

"Elimination" is the second song on Overkill's fourth studio album, the legendary "The Years of Decay". The song tells a story of a man who got infected with a deadly disease and tries to infect as many people as he can.

"Master of Puppets" is the title track of Metallica's third studio album.

"The Years of Decay" was released in 1989 and "Master of Puppets" was in 1985, so probably Overkill was inspired by Metallica. Both songs are amazing, but I prefer "Elimination".
11. Which T-letter band's album starts with a song called "Think This" and finishes with the song "Think That"?

Answer: Toxik

These two songs are from the album, "Think This". "Think This" is the second studio album by Toxik. It was released in 1989. After the supporting tour of this album, Toxik disbanded in 1992.
12. Which band's song has this line: "Ask the sheep for their beliefs, do you kill on God's command?"?

Answer: Megadeth

This line is from the song "Holy Wars...The Punishment Due", which is the first song on Megadeth's fourth studio album, the almighty "Rust in Peace".

This brilliant song has two parts. The first one "Holy Wars" was written about the religious conflict in Northern Ireland which started in 1960.

The second part was influenced by the Marvel Comics character, The Punisher. Another Megadeth song "Killing Is My Business...And Business Is Good" was based on the story of that character, too.
13. Which album is NOT a debut album?

Answer: Megadeth- "Peace Sells...But Who's Buying?"

"Obsessed by Cruelty" is Sodom's debut which was released in 1986.

"Fistful of Metal" is Anthrax's debut album, which was released in 1984. It's the only Anthrax album to feature Neil Turbin on vocals. He was replaced by Joey Belladona in 1985.

"We Have Arrived" is Dark Angel's debut, which was released in 1985. This is the only Dark Angel album without the iconic logo.

"Peace Sells...But Who's Buying?" is Megadeth's second studio album, released in 1986.
14. Which band has a song inspired by the true story of a Montreal girl with a mental disorder?

Answer: Annihilator

This song is "Alison Hell", off Annihilator's debut, the 1989 "Alice in Hell". The song talks about a girl who is terrorized by an evil spirit. She asks help from her parents but they ignore her. She goes insane slowly and probably kills herself (The last line says "Goodbye").

The song is based on a true story about a girl in Montreal who was in the news in the early '80s.

In a Songfacts interview, Jeff Waters explained: "She had a mental disorder and her parents would lock her in her room because she was waking up with these nightmares about the Boogeyman and things like that. And the parents did this for a few years. The kid was really young, and she went into some kind of full-on mental breakdown and had to be institutionalized."
15. Which thrash metal band's member has NOT been the member of Metallica?

Answer: Overkill

Kirk Hammett, the Metallica guitarist, was the guitarist of Exodus, but he left the band in 1982 to join Metallica.

Former Metallica bassist, Jason Newsted, played on the amazing Flotsam and Jetsam debut album, "Doomsday for the Deceiver". He also left the band to join Metallica. He played on four Metallica albums, the first one was the 1988 "...And Justice for All" and the last one was "Reload".

Megadeth's frontman, Dave Mustaine, was the original Metallica guitarist, but he got kicked out in 1982, because of his drug problems. After he got kicked out, he formed Megadeth.
