There was some dispute as to who conceived the song. Credits are given to Robbie Williams and Guy Chambers but Ray Hefferman, an Irishman, Robbie met in a Dublin pub in 1996 claims that the original idea for the song came from him. Ray Hefferman received a waiver fee of around £7,500 a meager amount considering the success of the song.

The original stage version of the musical "Phantom of the Opera" was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and opened in London in 1986. As of 2010 it is in its 24th year. In 1988 it won seven "Tony" awards. It was subsequently made into a 2004 movie directed by Joel Schumacher.

The song is sung by Christina who has been coached by "The Angel of Music," she believes it is the spirit of her dead father but in reality it is the Phantom who "haunts" the opera house and is obsessed about by Christina.
