Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. John Lydon was born in London on the 31st of January of which year?

Answer: 1956

He was born in the inner-city district of Holloway. His parents were a couple of working class immigrants from Ireland, John and Eileen.
2. At the age of seven, Lydon was hospitalized with spinal meningitis for a whole year. The treatments for this left him with what abnormality?

Answer: Curved spine

He spent the year in St. Anne's Hospital in Haringey, London. He suffered from hallucinations, nausea and headaches during his stay, and the spine curvature was caused by nurses drawing out fluid from the spine. It was also responsible for giving him what he would later describe as the "Lydon stare".
3. Lydon went on to join the Sex Pistols, forming in 1975. What was the first single the band released in the UK (and there only under the EMI label)?

Answer: Anarchy in the U.K.

The song was released on 26 November 1976; EMI would drop the group one and a half months later for using expletive language on a live television broadcast. Their next label, A&M Records, would drop them on 16 March 1977, having signed them only a week beforehand.
4. On 27 May 1977, after original bassist Glen Matlock had left and the subsequent replacement Sid Vicious had joined, the Sex Pistols' second single, "God Save the Queen", was released in the UK. The song instigated major controversy to such a point that there was debate as to whether it had been deliberately kept out of the number one position of the UK chart (week of June 11, 1977) to avoid a 'spectacle'. In either case, which song was awarded the number one spot for that week?

Answer: "I Don't Want to Talk About It"/"The First Cut Is the Deepest" - Rod Stewart

Before release, staff at the pressing plant had instigated a strike in protest of the song's content. The song was released to coincide with Queen Elizabeth's Silver Jubilee celebrations - in mockery of these events, the Sex Pistols performed the song while sailing down the River Thames, passing Westminster Pier and the Houses of Parliament.

However, police forced the band to dock, and many of the band's entourage (and manager Malcolm McLaren) were arrested.
5. Later in 1977, the Sex Pistols would release their only studio album, "Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols". The album would be certified platinum in the UK, but in which year did this certification occur?

Answer: 1988

It would take only three weeks for Gold certification (100,000 copies sold), but 11 years for Platinum certification (300,000 copies sold). A CD re-release in 1993 sold more copies, achieving double Platinum certification in July 2013.
6. Lydon left the Sex Pistols in early 1978 after a turbulent tour of the US. In which venue did he perform for the last time before the band broke up?

Answer: Winterland Ballroom, San Francisco, CA

After refusing to perform more than one song for the encore (a Stooges cover, "No Fun"), he stated to the audience "Ah-ha-ha. Ever get the feeling you've been cheated? Good night" before promptly throwing down his microphone and leaving the stage.
7. After leaving the Sex Pistols, later the same year he formed a new band, Public Image Ltd, with former Clash member Keith Levene and school friend Jah Wobble. Which of these wasn't a single they released in the UK in the remainder of the 1970s?

Answer: Bad Life

"Public Image" was their first single, in 1978. "Death Disco" and "Memories" would follow a year later, in 1979. "Bad Life" would not be released until 1984, by which time both Levene and Wobble had left the band.
8. In 1987, Public Image Ltd released a song in the UK that was named after which city in North America?

Answer: Seattle

All four cities have been song titles. "Tampico" was originally sung by June Christy in 1945, peaking at number three on the Billboard charts, "Detroit" has been used by many acts including Rancid and Primal Scream, and "Vancouver" was performed by Genesis on their 1978 album "...And Then There Were Three...". "Seattle" peaked at number 47 on the UK charts for Public Image Ltd.
9. Two years later, in 1989, Public Image Ltd. released an album titled "9". Which song off the album reached number one on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart in the US?

Answer: Disappointed

"Disappointed" stayed on the chart for 13 weeks and reached number one on 29 July 1989. It also entered the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play Songs charts, where it stayed for five weeks and reached number 26 on 8 July 1989.
10. In February 2004, in an interview with the Scottish newspaper "Sunday Mirror", Lydon stated he and his wife "should be dead" because due to his wife taking too long to pack, what type of disaster did they avoid?

Answer: Plane crash

They were scheduled to be on Pan Am Flight 103, which was brought down on December 21, 1988, killing everyone on board and 11 people on the ground. Tennis world number one Mats Wilander and actress Kim Cattrall should also have been on the same flight, but changed their plans shortly beforehand.
