Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Kylie Minogue played the part of the Green Fairy in the 2001 film "Moulin Rouge", but the character's distinctive laughter was voiced by someone else. Which rock star, famous for his plaintive cry of "Shaaarrronnn" and biting the head of a live bat on stage, provided the laugh?

Answer: Ozzy Osborne

The film was directed by Baz Luhrmann and starred Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor.
The "Green Fairy" is a euphemism for the drink absinthe, which is said to send those who imbibe to excess mad.

Ozzy Osborne's real name is John, and he is (in)famous for his wild partying lifestyle.
2. In 2011, Kylie Minogue was given an honorary doctorate by Anglia Ruskin University, in the United Kingdom. She then became entitled to use the letters D.H.Sc. after her name, and is Doctor Minogue. What does the H stand for in D.H.Sc.?

Answer: Health

Kylie was awarded the Doctorate of Health Science in acknowledgement of her work raising awareness of, and raising funds for research into, breast cancer.
She herself has undergone both surgical and chemotherapy treatment for the disease, after being diagnosed in 2005.
3. What would an Australian aborigine do with his "kylie"?

Answer: Hunt with it, it's a weapon

A "kylie" could be described as a "boomerang that doesn't come back" (surely that would make it a stick :-D) and is perhaps best categorised as a "hunting stick".
When thrown by a skilled user, a kylie hunting stick can bring down or kill prey up to the size of an adult kangaroo, and could even kill a person if they were struck full force!
4. When Kylie Minogue's character Charlene married Jason Donovan's Scott in the soap "Neighbours", the song that was played became a huge hit in Australia and the UK. Called "Suddenly", it was a ballad recorded by an artist more usually known for his rock/punk style. Who was he?

Answer: Angry Anderson

Anderson was lead singer of the band Rose Tattoo for many years, and they enjoyed chart success in their native Australia. "Suddenly" was taken from his first solo album "Beats From a Single Drum", and when it was used for "the Wedding" in 1987, it shot to number two on the Australian Singles Chart.

The following year, the episode aired in the UK, where it was watched by an audience larger than the entire population of Australia, and went to number three in the charts. It was held off the number two spot by Kylie and Jason's duet "Especially For You".
5. In 2004, Kylie Minogue won a Grammy Award for "Best Dance Recording", and attended the ceremony to accept her award in person. Which singer, known for her shaved head and controversial political and religious views, became the first person to decline a Grammy when she rejected hers in 1991?

Answer: Sinead O'Connor

The Grammy Awards began in 1959, and the award itself is in the shape the old fashioned wind up gramophone after which it is named.

Although the awards have been subject to criticism and derided as "insiders choice" and "self publicity" on behalf of the music industry, Sinead O'Connor was the first person ever to refuse one outright. In an interview, she said that her refusal was due to the "extreme commercialism" of the awards.
6. In 1989, Kylie Minogue played the female lead, Lola Lovell, in the film "The Delinquents". Who wrote the book upon which the film was based?

Answer: Criena Rohan

Criena Rohan was the pseudonym of Dierdre Cash, an Australian musician and poet.
When "The Delinquents" was first published in 1962, it garnered critical acclaim, particularly in the UK, with the "Daily Mail" saying it was "a back-street Tristan and Isolde".

Her only other novel to be published was "Down at the Dockside" (1963), although since her untimely death in 1963, there have been rumours of a lost manuscript.
7. Kylie Minogue's 2001 song "Can't Get You Out of My Head" reached the number one spot on the singles charts of forty countries world wide. The only country in Europe in which it did NOT reach number one was Suomi or "The Land of 1000 Lakes" - the first country in the world to give women full suffrage. Which country is this?

Answer: Finland

"Suomi" means Finland in Finnish. In 1906, Finland became the first country to give its female citizens full suffrage - they could vote and run for office.
8. Kylie Minogue was immortalised for the fourth time by Tussaud's Waxwork Museum in London, England in 2007. Most people have heard of Madame Tussaud who founded the waxworks, but do you know her first name?

Answer: Marie

Marie Tussaud made her first wax model in the 1770s, and began displaying her collection in England after she was forced into exile there by the Napoleonic Wars.

With the unveiling of her fourth likeness in 2007, Kylie became the "second most modelled woman" in the collection. Only Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II had been created more times.
9. The song "The Locomotion" was the best-selling single of the 1980s in Australia, and gave Kylie Minogue her first number one chart hit. Who wrote "The Locomotion"?

Answer: Gerry Goffin and Carole King

Goffin and King wrote the "Locomotion" in 1962, and it reached the top five of the Billboard Top 100 charts in the USA three times, in different decades, by different artists in the 20th century. The first two times it was released, by Little Eva in 1962 and Grand Funk Railroad in 1974, it reached number one. Kylie's version, released in 1988, reached number three.
10. In 1994, Kylie Minogue played Cammy in a film which was loosely based on a very successful Capcom video game. The film was Raul Julia's last ever performance, and was dedicated to him. Which film was this?

Answer: Street Fighter

The film, fully titled "Street Fighter: The Ultimate Battle", was both directed and written by Stephen de Souza. Alongside Kylie and Raul Julia, it also starred Jean Claude van Damme. The film was poorly received by the critics, although audiences liked it, and it received nominations for two Saturn Awards.

The Capcom video game on which the film was based first came out as an arcade game in 1987.
