"Touch Me in the Morning", written by Ron Miller and Michael Tasso, was Diana Ross' second number one hit after leaving The Supremes. It was a good time for Diana. In '72 she played Billie Holiday in the film "Lady Sings the Blues", a role which won her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress.

Carly Simon had just married James Taylor when this song hit number one. There has always been a great deal of debate about who she might have written this song about. Some of the possible candidates that have been suggested are: Mick Jagger, Cat Stevens, Warren Beatty, Kris Kristofferson and Hugh Hefner, all of whom she has had close relationships with.

However she has continually refused to reveal who served as her inspiration.

John Reginald Kenneth Dwight (Elton John) was playing piano by the age of four. By the time he reached 11, he'd won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music. It wasn't until he hooked up with friend and lyricist Bernie Taupin that he really became famous.

Billy Preston spent three years touring with Ray Charles before meeting up with The Beatles. He played keyboard during the "Get Back" cut on the "Let It Be" album, and was part of the infamous rooftop concert. He also had a few number one hits of his own in the '70s, this being one of them.

Marvin Gaye has had music in his soul his whole life. Part of the Motown stable of artists, Gaye married Barry Gordy's sister in 1961. He had a string of hits and developed a growing addiction to cocaine. "Let's Get It On" was written by Marvin Gaye and Ed Townsend. Marvin was shot to death by his father on April 1, 1984.

Jim Croce had a lifelong love of music, learning to play accordion when he was 5 years old. He played in a number of different bands over the years, including a duet with the woman who would become his wife. "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown", which he wrote about a man he once knew, was his first number one hit.

He too was taken too soon, when the plane he was in crashed into a tree shortly after take-off.

Answer: Tie a Yellow Ribbon 'Round the Old Oak Tree

Irvin Levine and Russell Brown were inspired to write this song after reading a story in the paper about an actual, similar incident. A bus driver in Miami had a passenger who had just been released from prison for writing bad cheques. He had written his wife and asked her to tie a yellow ribbon around a certain tree if he was still welcome at home.

The song became a huge hit for Tony Orlando and Dawn, selling more than 7 million copies.
