Tony Orlando recorded the song "Candida", hiring session musicians to come in later and add back-up vocals. It was released under the name Dawn, after his daughter. The song was a huge success, giving a number one hit to a group that didn't really exist, who had never actually met each other.

By the time "Knock Three Times" was released, they had formed as a group, under the name Tony Orlando and Dawn.

The Temptations make their third appearance on our BRI's countdown, with another number one hit, written by Whitfield/Strong. Shortly after this song, two of the founding members, Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams, left the group.

In the 70s Donny Osmond had a very successful individual career while also singing, at the same time, lead in the group The Osmond Brothers. "Go Away Little Girl" fills the number eight slot on the BRI list for 1971, while The Osmond Brothers hold the number five spot.

Born Henry John Deutschendorf, John Denver changed his name because he aspired to becoming a recording artist. He named himself after the capital city of Colorado, which is nestled in the Rockies, an area that he loved. He died when the plane that he was piloting crashed on Oct. 12, 1997.

Paul Revere and the Raiders were better known for their television appearances than they were as recording artists. The spent 2 years as the resident band on the show "Where the Action Is", and 2 years as the band on the show "Happenings". '(The Lament of the Cherokee Nation) Indian Reservation", written by John D. Loudermilk, was their biggest hit.

Alan, Wayne, Merill, Jay and Donny Osmond sang together for almost ten years before securing a recording contract. "One Bad Apple", also a hit for the Jackson 5, was their first number one hit, staying number one on the charts for more than 3 months.

Barry, Maurice and Robin Gibb started singing in movie theatres in Manchester when Barry was nine and Maurice and Robin were six. The family moved to Australia in 1958, where the boys had a reasonably successful career as performers and songwriters. They moved back to Britain in 1967, where things really took off for them. This was their second number one hit in the U.S.

Both songs were performed by the amazing Carole King on her incredibly successful album, "Tapestry". Perhaps they were released as a single, where the songs blended together. However I can find no record of this, and certainly don't remember it. King wrote "I Feel the Earth Move", and co-wrote "It's Too Late" with Toni Stern.

Rod Stewart has had a long and varied career, singing with a number of bands (including the Jeff Beck Group and Faces) before settling down to a successful solo career. "Maggie Mae", written by Stewart and Martin Quittenton, was originally released as the B side to "Reason to Believe", but became a much bigger hit.
