Answer: Mungo Jerry

Mungo Jerry had a number one hit for two weeks on the UK chart with "Baby Jump" in 1971. It did not chart in the US.

This record was Mungo Jerry's second and last UK number one hit. Group leader singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Ray Dorset wrote and sang "Feels Like I'm In Love" on a solo album. Elvis Presley was about to record the song but died before doing so. It became a UK number one in 1980 when singer Kelly Marie record it. This enabled Ray Dorset to hit the UK number one spot as a singer and a songwriter.

Answer: T. Rex

T. Rex had a number one hit for six weeks on the UK chart with "Hot Love" in 1971. It reached number 72 on the US pop chart the same year.

T.Rex was formed in 1967 by Marc Bolan as Tyrannosaurus Rex. The group which at first had four members split up. It was then a duo with Bolan and Steve Took, then that duo split and Mickey Finn joined Marc Bolan. After the first two hits "Ride A White Swan" and "Hot Love" they added Bill Legend and Steve Currie to the group to tour.

Answer: Double Barrel

Dave an Ansil Collins had a number one for two weeks on the UK chart with "Double Barrel" in 1971. It reached number 22 on the US pop chart the same year.

Dave and Ansil Collins from Jamaica were the first black duo to top the UK chart. Their only other UK hit (as Dave and Ansel Collins) was "Monkey Spanner" which reached number seven in 1971.

Answer: Tony Orlando

The lead singer of Dawn Tony Orlando, had a number five hit on the UK chart with "Bless You" in 1961. It reached number 15 on the US pop chart the same year.

Dawn had a number one hit for five weeks on the UK chart with "Knock Three Times" in 1971. It was number one for three weeks on the US pop chart the same year. Tony Orlando's backing singers on their first two hits were Toni Wine and singer/songwriter Ellie Greenwich. Then a permanent trio was formed with singers Telma Hopkins and Joyce Vincent. The trio split up in 1977.

Answer: Middle Of The Road

Middle Of The Road had a number one hit for five weeks on the UK chart with "Chirpy, Chirpy, Cheep, Cheep" in 1971. It did not chart in the US (you lucky people).

Middle Of The Road were a Scottish group that based themselves and recorded in Italy after having no success on the UK chart in the '60s. "Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep" is supposed to have sold in excess of 10,000,000 copies world wide. It was number one in Switzerland and Norway.

Answer: I'm Still Waiting

Diana Ross Had a number one hit for four weeks on the UK chart with "I'm Still Waiting" in 1971. It reached number 63 on the US pop chart the same year.

After being the lead singer of the most successful girl group of the '60s The Supremes, Diana Ross went solo and added six more US number one hits to the 12 she achieved with The Supremes. In the UK The Supremes had one number one hit and Diana Ross had two more solo number one hits.

Answer: The Tams

The Tams had a number one hit for three weeks on the UK chart with "Hey Girl Don't Bother Me" in 1971. It reached number 41 on the US pop chart in 1964.

"Hey Girl Don't Bother Me" was re-released and became a hit on the UK chart in 1971 because of the song's popularity on the UK northern soul scene. The group had to wait 16 years for their next UK hit, a number 21 hit on the UK chart "Ain't Nothin' Like Shaggin'". It was banned by the BBC because the song title definitely does not mean dancing in the UK.

Answer: Rod Stewart

Rod Stewart had a number one for five weeks on the UK chart with "Maggie May" in 1971. It was simultaneously number one for five weeks on the US pop chart the same year.

Roderick David Stewart (Rod The Mod) sang with a number of groups before having solo success such as The Hoochie Coochie Men with Long John Baldry, Steampacket, Shotgun Express with Mick Fleetwood and Peter Green (later of Fleetwood Mac), The Jeff Beck Group and The Faces. He has had six UK number one hits and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.

Answer: Slade

Slade had a number one hit for four weeks on the UK chart with "Coz I Love You" in 1971. It did not chart in the US.

Slade were Neville "Noddy" Holder (vocals/guitar), Dave Hill (guitar/vocals), Jim Lea (bass guitar/vocals) and Don Powell (drums). They had six number one hits on the UK chart, three of which entered the chart at number one. They were the first act to achieve this feat. Since Noddy Holder left Slade he has become and actor, DJ and TV personality.

Answer: Milkman

Benny Hill had a number one hit for four weeks with "Ernie (The Fastest Milkman In The West)" on the UK chart in 1971. It did not chart in the US.

Written by Benny Hill (born Alfred Hawthorn Hill) in 1955, inspired by his experience as a milkman in pre WWII Hampshire UK. It was re-released the year Benny died and reached number 29 on the UK chart in 1992. The 1966 US hit "The Ballad Of Irving" by Frank Gallop has the same melody. The Benny Hill Show which had run in one form or another from 1951 was cancelled by John Howard Davies (he played Oliver Twist in the 1948 movie "Oliver Twist") who was then the head of light entertainment at Thames TV.
