Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Don McLean wrote the very popular "American Pie" in 1971. The story behind the song is about three great musicians plane crash in 1959 (Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper). There are many influences for this classic tune, but the biggest influence was from the Beatles. What Beatles album was McLean influenced by?

Answer: Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band

Some proof of this is the line "Sergeants played a marching tune" is likely a reference "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band". However there are also many other references in the song, including references to Bob Dylan, the Byrds, Janis Joplin, and the Altamont Speedway Concert in 1969. "American Pie" was released as a single, despite the song running about 8 minutes long, and hit number one on the U.S. charts and number three on the U.K. charts.
2. Janis Joplin released "Me and Bobby McGee". The 1971 song is about two lovers traveling together but break up to discover the world on their own. The song reached number one on the U.S. charts. What album was the song released off of?

Answer: Pearl

"Me and Bobby McGee" was written by Kris Kristofferson, who has written hundreds of songs for a lot of artists in his career. The song was released as a single after Joplin died, the death causing everybody to give attention to her album. This effect made "Pearl" go number one.
3. "Led Zeppelin IV" was released by Led Zeppelin in 1971. This album may be the best one by the band, as it hit songs like "Stairway To Heaven" and "Black Dog" made this album very popular. Out of the following songs off the album, which one was released as a single off of the album?

Answer: Rock And Roll

"Rock And Roll", a favorite from Zeppelin, reached number 47 on the U.S. Charts. The only other single that was released off of "Led Zeppelin IV" was "Black Dog", which hit number 16 on the U.S. Charts.
4. Pink Floyd had their hit album "Meddle" in 1971. This was one of the albums that eventually led up to "Dark Side Of The Moon", which would lead Floyd to rock-n-roll fame. The album only consists of a short number of tunes, but there is one song over twenty minutes long! What's the title of the song that takes up the entire first side of the vinyl album?

Answer: Echoes

Pink Floyd also released two more albums in 1971, "Relics" and "Atom Heart Mother", but "Meddle" was the most popular.
5. "Ain't No Sunshine" was written by Bill Withers and released in 1971. The R & B tune is famous for the "I know, I know, I know..." section of the song, as "I know" is said 26 times! What number did this song reach in the U.S.?

Answer: Three

All the instruments on this song were acoustic, and Stephen Stills played lead guitar on the song. "Ain't No Sunshine" didn't chart in the U.K., but Michael Jackson's cover hit number eight there in 1972. Also this song won a Grammy for best R & B song in 1972.
6. "L.A. Woman" is considered one of the best Doors albums ever. Released in 1971, the album contains hits like "L.A. Woman", "Riders On The Storm", and "Love Her Madly". There is also something unusual about this album, what is it?

Answer: The last Doors album to be recorded with Jim Morrison

Jim Morrison shortly died after the recording of "L.A. Woman". R.I.P Jim. "L.A. Woman" was the FIRST Doors' album to be produced by the Doors. Their usual producer, Paul Rothchild, who produced the previous Doors 5 albums, refused to produce this one because he did not like the songs. He instead produced an album for Janis Joplin.
7. The Rolling Stones released "Sticky Fingers" in 1971 and was a big hit for the band. With songs like "Brown Sugar", "You Gotta Move", and "Wild Horses" this album was a sure go-getter. The album cover also was unique too, as a close-up picture of a man's jeans with a real zipper. The tongue logo was the first time it was used too. Who designed the famous album cover?

Answer: Andy Warhol

Andy Warhol was a famous painter who created very interesting painting (my opinion) and are selling at good prices these days. The two big songs off of "Sticky Fingers" (as mentioned before) are "Brown Sugar", which hit number one in the U.S. and number two in the U.K., and "Wild Horses", which hit number 28 in the U.S.
8. "Just My Imagination" was a popular tune from the Temptations from the 1971 album "Sky's The Limit". The song reached number one in the U.S. "Just My Imagination" was also released in the U.K. What number did the song reach in the U.K. charts?

Answer: Eight

This was the third of four number one hits by the Temptations. Another interesting footnote is that this was the last single the Temptations with Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams in the group. Kendricks pursued a solo career, Williams unfortunately died in 1972.
9. The Who released "Who's Next" in the awesome year of 1971. Critical acclaimed as the Who's greatest album, it certainly does show as a great album with songs like "Baba O Riley", "Won't Get Fooled Again", and "Behind Blue Eyes". Pete Townshend wrote all the songs on the album, except for one which was composed by John Entwistle. What song was it?

Answer: My Wife

The dark-humor song "My Wife" was written by Entwistle, which lead to the bassist to become the band's alternate song writer. Most of his tunes are on the humorous side, like "Boris the Spider" of off the early Who album "A Quick One". "My Wife" is about a man out to late partying and gotten in trouble with his wife. A great album overall.
10. John Lennon, after breaking up with the famous Beatles, pursued a solo career. In 1971, he hit it big when he wrote the political-strong song "Imagine". When released, it hit number 3 on the U.S. Charts. It was released as a single in the U.K. in 1975, then re-released shortly after Lennon's death in the U.K. raising it to number one on the charts. What number was "Imagine" on the U.K. charts when it was first released in 1975?

Answer: Six

In 1980, when it was re-released, it hit number one on the U.K. charts easily. It was replaced by Lennon's song "Woman", marking only the second time an artist replaced himself/herself on top of the U.K. charts. The Lennon lead Beatles did it first, by following "I Want To Hold Your Hand" with "She Loves You". Thanks for playing my 1971-Year of Music quiz. Keep rocking.
