Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison, Ringo Starr

Answer: The Beatles

The Beatles are probably the most popular music group in all of history. They are famous for their suits, their catchy songs, their vocal harmonies, and the fact that everybody in the band sang and wrote songs. They are also famous for trying many different styles of music, including pop, rock, folk, and avant garde. Most musicians who came after them were either influenced by them or they were influenced by other bands but those other bands were influenced by them, or they were influenced by other bands who were influenced by other bands who were influenced by them, and so on. I could go on listing their accomplishments but you're probably already aware enough of them.

Songs that Paul McCartney sang include "Hey Jude," "Eleanor Rigby," "Hello Goodbye," and "Can't Buy Me Love."

Songs that John Lennon sang include "Come Together," "A Hard Day's Night," "Help!" "Nowhere Man," and "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds"

Songs that George Harrison sang include "Taxman," "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," "Within You Without You," "Something," and "Only a Northern Song."

Songs that Ringo Starr sang include "Yellow Submarine," "With a Little Help From my Friends," "Octopus's Garden," "What Goes on," and "Good Night."
2. Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Peter Criss, Ace Frehley

Answer: KISS

KISS was one of the most popular hard rock bands of the 1970s. They are famous for their black and white make-up, their outlandish costumes, and their live shows that include pyro, explosions, Gene Simmons breathing fire, Gene Simmons sticking out his long tongue and spitting fake blood, and Paul Stanley flying by trapeze to a mini-stage in the middle of the audience. They are also beloved for songs that are catchy and that people can relate to.

Songs Gene Simmons sang include "Rock and Roll All Night," "Calling Dr. Love," "Christine Sixteen," "I Love it Loud" and "God of Thunder." Ironically, he is sometimes called the god of thunder even though Paul Stanley wrote that song.

Songs that Paul Stanley sang include "Detroit Rock City," "I Was Made For Lovin' You," "Forever," "Love Gun," and "Lick it Up."

Songs that Peter Criss sang include "Beth," "Hard Luck Woman," "Black Diamond," "Hooligan," and "Dirty Livin'."

Songs that Ace Frehley sang include "Shock Me," "Rocket Ride," "Hard Times," "Talk to me," and "Into the Void."
3. Don Henley, Glen Frey, Randy Meisner, Bernie Leadon

Answer: Eagles

Eagles were a popular soft rock band from the 1970s. "Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975)" sold 38 million copies in the United States, becoming the best-selling album there. The most impressive thing about that is that greatest hits album accomplished that without having "Hotel California" on it, or any songs from that album. That album sold 26 million copies worldwide and became the third highest selling album in the United States. The Eagles have sold over 2000 million albums worldwide, becoming one of the world's best-selling bands.

Songs that Don Henley sang include "Hotel California," "Witchy Woman," "Desperado," "Life in the Fast Lane,"and "The Long Run."

Songs that Glenn Frey sang include "Take it Easy," "Already Gone," "Tequila Sunrise," "Peaceful Easy Feeling," and "New Kid in Town."

Songs that Randy Meisner sang include "Take it to the Limit" "Too Many Hands," "Try and Love Again," "Take the Devil" and "Is it True?"

Songs that Bernie Leadon sang include "Earlybird," "Twenty-One," "Bitter Creek," "My Man," and "I Wish You Peace."
4. Stevie Nicks, Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham

Answer: Fleetwood Mac

Fleetwood Mac were a band from the 1970s. They started off as a blues band, but later they became a pop rock band. They've gone through many line-up changes. Their most successful line-up was in the mid 1970s when they had two female singers (Nicks and McVie) and one male singer (Buckingham).

Songs sung by Nicks include "Landslide," "Rhiannon," "Dreams," "Gold Dust Woman," and "Sisters of the Moon."

Songs sung by McVie include "Over My Head," "Over My Ways," "You Make Lovin' Fun" and "Oh Daddy."

Songs sung by Buckingham include "Second Hand News," "Never Going Back Again," "Go Your Own Way," "Monday Morning," and "Blue Letter."
5. Dennis DeYoung, Tommy Shaw, James Young

Answer: Styx

Styx are an American rock band that were popular in the late 1970s and early 1980s. They are famous for being some of the best musicians in rock, and for their diversity, doing styles from progressive rock to arena rock to heavy metal to soft ballads to folk music. They were diverse in large part because they always had three different songwriters and singers. These three changed over the years, but the most popular line-up had Dennis DeYoung, Tommy Shaw, and James Young. DeYoung played keyboards and sang while Shaw and Young played guitar and sang.

Songs sung by Dennis DeYoung include "Come Sail Away," "Mr. Robot," "Lady," "Babe," and "The Best of Times."

Songs sung by Tommy Shaw include "Renegade," "Too Much Time on My Hands," "Blue Collar Man (Long Nights), "Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man)," and "Crystal Ball."

James Young didn't sing any of the big hits, but he is the only member to sing at least one song on every album from the beginning of their career through 2017. Songs he sang include "Miss America," "Eddie," "Half Penny Two Penny," "These Are The Times," and "Captain America."
6. Bob Shane, Nick Reynolds, Dave Guard

Answer: The Kingston Trio

The Kingston Trio were a folk music group that began in 1958 and continued through 1967. There were some individual rock stars like Elvis Presley and Chuck Berry who were more popular, but the Kingston Trio were the most popular GROUP of musicians in the world until the Beatles came along. They had four albums that were in the top ten on the U.S. Billboard 200 Chart at the same time for five consecutive weeks, a feat that no one since them, not even the Beatles, has matched. Of the 19 albums they made, 14 reached the top ten on that chart and five reached number one.

They were famous for songs that were easy to sing along with, and songs that were either relatable or interesting stories. They were also beloved for their harmonies and for the fact that all three members sang lead vocal too. A common formula for Kingston Trio songs was to have one member sing one verse, then they all sing the chorus together, then a different member sings the second verse, then the chorus again, and then the member who didn't sing one of the first two verse would sing the third verse, and then one final chorus.

After they broke up in 1967, Shane created a group called "The New Kingston Trio," with different musicians. In 1976, he earned the right to use the name "The Kingston Trio" and drop the word "New." The Kingston Trio were still around and performing live shows at the time this quiz was made, although they had many line-up changes.
7. Chester Bennington, Mike Shinoda

Answer: Linkin Park

Linkin Park were one of the most popular rock bands of the 21st Century. They became famous when their debut album, "Hybrid Theory," came out in 2001. That album has sold over 30 million copies worldwide, making it the highest selling rock debut album since Guns 'n Roses' "Appetite For Destruction." "Hybrid Theory" had hits such as "In The End," "One Step Closer," "Crawling," and "Runaway."

Linkin Park started off as a rap/rock band, sometimes categorized as nu metal. Later in their career the added some electronic aspects to their sound and became more of a pop group. A common formula for their songs was to have verses rapped by Mike Shinoda, a chorus sung by Chester Bennington, and a bridge 2/3 of the way through the song also sung by Bennington.
8. Roger Waters, David Gilmour

Answer: Pink Floyd

Pink Floyd are one of the greatest and most popular rock bands in history. They have sold over 250 million albums world wide. In the 1970s they had four straight albums sell for 13 million copies or more worldwide, including "The Dark Side of the Moon" and "The Wall."

They are beloved for their experimentation. Before Pink Floyd, rock musicians didn't do much experimentation. Most rock songs were simple, upbeat songs about love. Pink Floyd were one of the first bands to change that perspective by trying new things. They were beloved for popularizing the concept album: an album where all the songs tell a story from beginning to end, and also their live shows which were unusual.

They've gone through line-up changes over the course of their career. Their most successful line-up had Roger Waters and guitarist David Gilmour doing most of the vocals.

Songs sung by Roger Waters include "Brain Damage," "Shine on You Crazy Diamond," "Sheep," "Another Brick in the Wall Part 1" and "The Happiest Days of Our Lives."

Songs sung by David Gilmour include "Goodbye Blue Sky," "Young Lust," "Wish You Were Here," "Us and Them," and "Money."
9. Joe Strummer, Mick Jones

Answer: The Clash

The Clash were a punk rock band from 1977-1985. They are one of the most popular punk rock bands of all time. Punk rock bands in general weren't known for their diversity. They just did songs that were short and sweet and really fast. The Clash proved that punk bands can do more. They incorporated elements of reggae, ska, new wave, and funk into their music. Because of this, many people believe that the Clash are the greatest band in history ever to be known as a punk band.

The majority of their songs were sung by Strummer. However, Mick Jones sang the lead vocal on two of the band's biggest hits in the U.S., "Train in Vain" and "Should I Stay or Should I Go." Jones also sang some of my other favorite Clash songs such as "Lost in the Supermarket," "Somebody Got Murdered," and "Stay Free."
10. Fred Schneider, Cindy Wilson, Kate Pierson

Answer: The B 52's

The B 52's were a popular dance rock band in the 1970s and the 1980s. They are famous for their hits "Rock Lobster," "Love Shack," and "Roam." Many of their songs had a "Call and response" thing going, with the man, Fred Schneider, doing the call, and two women together, Cindy Wilson and Kate Pierson, responding. "Roam" is sung entirely by the women.
