Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which band is the house band in "Beach Party" and "Muscle Beach Party"?

Answer: Dick Dale and the Del-Tones

Most beach movies claim a house band in a beach club. Dick Dale and the Del-Tones perform "Secret Surfer Spot" once and "Swingin' and Surfin'" twice in "Beach Party". In "Muscle Beach Party" Dick opens with his composition "Surfer's Holiday". The Beach Boys make an appearance in another teen-genre film but are not in "Beach Party" or "Muscle Beach Party".

The Challengers are not in the movies but they are a seminal surf band from southern California. Their debut album, "Surfbeat", is the biggest selling surf album of all time.

The Surfaris are not in the two movie scores, but they recorded what is considered the best known surfing anthem; "Wipeout".
2. Who is the featured house band in "The Ghost in the Invisible Bikini"?

Answer: The Bobby Fuller Four

The Bobby Fuller Four (Bobby, bassist and brother Randy Fuller, guitarist Jim Reese and drummer Dalton Powell) was a hot band in the L.A. club scene in 1965. They were not actually a surfing group but their popularity likely led to their casting. Bobby died under mysterious circumstances a few years later as their hit "I Fought The Law" was on the charts. Eric Von Zipper (Harvey Lembeck) leads his gang, the Ratz and Mice in "I Am My Ideal" in "Beach Blanket Bingo".

The Four Seasons sing in "Beach Ball".
3. The Hondells are the house band in which beach movie?

Answer: Beach Blanket Bingo

During its five year long life the lineup of this band continually changed. In fact, it wasn't really a group at all, but rather a continually revolving cast of various West Coast studio musicians managed by Gary Usher. Usher wrote the lyrics for the Beach Boys' songs "In My Room" and "409".

The Hondells' only hit was "Little Honda" written by Brian Wilson and Mike Love of The Beach Boys. "It's a Bikini World" has The Animals and Castaways in the soundtrack. "Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine" features The Supremes doing the title song. "When The Boys Meet The Girls" is actually set in Nevada and has Sam the Sham and The Pharaohs as musical guests.
4. Which female character in the beach movies released beach movie albums with a band called the Exciters?

Answer: Candy Johnson.

Candy is a character who appears in the first four "Beach Party" films. She has lines in only one of them but was visually impossible to forget. Candy is the fringe-wearing, wild blond go-go dancer who could put a man in a daze and send him flying through the air with the swish of her hips. Annette made several beach party soundtrack albums. Donna Loren released several albums as a result of her appearances in four of the beach movies including the "Beach Blanket Bingo" soundtrack album. Sandra Dee plays Gidget in the movie of the same name.
5. Which beach movie is the only one that features the Beach Boys and has three numbers by Lesley Gore?

Answer: The Girls on the Beach

Songs in this musical include "Leave Me Alone," "It's Gotta Be You," and "I Don't Want to Be a Loser" by Lesley Gore. "Girls On the Beach," and "Little Honda" are sung by the Beach Boys. Tommy Kirk and Deborah Walley are the lead stars in "The Ghost In the Invisible Bikini".

In addition to acting, Nancy Sinatra sings "Geronimo" in the movie. In "Beach Blanket Bingo" Linda Evans gets to perform singing "New Love". "Wild On The Beach" has Sandy Nelson, Sonny and Cher and the Astronauts in the musical lineup.
6. Which movie features Gary Lewis and the Playboys as the house band along with The Rip Chords and a finale number by The Righteous Brothers?

Answer: A Swingin' Summer

"A Swingin' Summer" revolves around a group of teens who open a wild dance club to make money. The music album for this movie is among the best of the beach movie scores. Gary Lewis and the Playboys were at the height of their popularity. The Righteous Brothers wrap the flick up with their hit song "Justine". "Fireball 500" features Fabian singing along with Frankie and Annette. Most of the score for "Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine" was left on the cutting room floor to make way for three Playboy Playmates: China Lee, Marianne Gaba, and Sue Hamilton. "When the One Way Wahine Does the Bird" and "When I Look at You" are performed by Ray Peterson in "One Way Wahini".
7. Which beach movie features Del Shannon and the band The Offbeats?

Answer: Daytona Beach Weekend

If you haven't already been tipped off by the title "Daytona Beach Weekend" is a low-budget emulation of other Spring-Break favorites such as "Where the Boys Are" and "Palm Springs Weekend". In lieu of a plot, Del Shannon and the other pop artists set the beat for a wild vacation weekend. Filmed in 16mm and minus any name actors in the cast, the picture is rather boring except for when the guest stars perform. "Palm Springs Weekend" did not feature a notable musical score. "C'mon Let's Live a Little" features numbers by cast members Bobby Vee and Jackie De Shannon.
8. Which beach movie has a subtitle and theme song titled "Never Steal Anything Wet" and spotlights Little Richard as a performer?

Answer: Catalina Caper

In this movie the gang on the beach tries to recover a stolen museum scroll. The Cascades also appear doing their hit "Rhythm of the Rain." Little Richard performs "Don't Knock the Rock". The Del-Aires, a garage rock band from New Jersey, appears throughout "The Horror of Party Beach".

The bikini flick "Village of the Giants" has the Beau Brummels as musical guests. In "Ride the Wild Surf" the title song recorded by Jan and Dean is heard over the closing credits. The movie also contains "Surfer's Stomp" performed by The Marketts.
9. Which movie features Frankie Avalon in a secondary role as a British Invasion singer named Potato Bug?

Answer: Bikini Beach

In this 1964 flick Annette's character is torn between Frankie and British recording star Potato Bug. The Potato Bug actually has teeth similar to Austin Powers. He drives the girls in the gang crazy with songs like "Gimme Your Love" and "How About That".

The Pyramids are featured as the main band and perform a great version of "Midnight Run". The Gentrys, The Toys, and Pat and Lolly Vegas are among the entertainers in "It's A Bikini World". Annette Funicello's "The Perfect Boy" and "Better Be Ready" are sung in "How to Stuff a Wild Bikini". Donna Loren performs "Among the Young" and Dorothy Lamour makes a guest appearance singing "Where Did I Go Wrong" in "Pajama Party".
10. Which beach movie has The Kingsmen as the house band?

Answer: How to Stuff a Wild Bikini

Instead of doing their famous hit "Louie Louie" the band instead proceeds to bang out "Give Her Lovin," which is about as close as one can come to an example of rock n' roll circa late 1965. The majority of the other musical numbers are done by the cast as solos. Bob Denver performs "Ho Daddy, Surf's Up" in "For Those Who Think Young". "Muscle Bustle", a song Gary Usher co-wrote with Brian Wilson, is performed by Dick Dale and Donna Loren in "Muscle beach Party". "Beach House Party" features the movie singing debut of Jackie and Gayle.
