Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Track One: In "Jackson Cannery", what happens while "seconds pass slowly"?

Answer: Years Go Flying By

This lyric is in the first verse of "Jackson Cannery." This explosive first track was the ideal start to Ben Folds Fives' career.
2. Track Two: What piece of music does Ben borrow from as part of the piano solo in "Philosophy"?

Answer: Gershwin- Rhapsody In Blue

Ben takes "Rhapsody In Blue" to a new level in this solo! He plays the theme at a much faster speed than on any previous recording of the piece of music.
3. Track Three: Who sings the high harmonies in "Julianne"?

Answer: Robert Sledge

Robert actually sings the high harmonies in all of their songs but he gets particularly high in this song. Darren always sings the low harmony (which is still quite high!) and if Ben is not singing melody, he sings the middle harmony. Caleb Southern was the band's producer in its early days.
4. Track Four: In the piano solo in "Where's Summer B?", who can be heard saying "yeah" and "hey" during the piano solo?

Answer: Ben Folds

Ben is having a bit of fun, pretending to be arrogant while he plays a very simple solo.
5. Track Five: Complete the lyrics from "Alice Childress": "__ ___________ ________ is not so good."

Answer: An Arranged Marriage

This lyric is a little bit hard to understand. It is sung in unison by all three band members just before the final verse.
6. Track Six: What is significantly different about the album arrangement of "Underground" to live performances of the song?

Answer: It Is Much Slower

I was amazed when I heard "Ben Folds Five" play this song live. It sounds so different and it is a much better song when played up-tempo.
7. Track Seven: In "Sports And Wine", what sound is above the piano solo?

Answer: Ben "Scatting" To His Solo

For a long time I thought that it was Robert who sung this part until I heard Ben play the song solo and I realised that it was the same voice as on the recording. Ben does this in both his solos in this song.
8. Track Eight: What instrument is NOT playing at the start of the first verse in "Uncle Walter"?

Answer: Piano

The piano drops put after the intro and Ben sings with only the bass and drums as accompaniment. Halfway through the verse Ben joins back in with his piano playing.
9. Track Nine: What instrument starts off "The Best Imitation Of Myself"?

Answer: Vocals

Ben sings "I feel like a..." before he starts playing piano. Shortly after, the drums come into the music and then the distorted bass joins in as well as harmonies.
10. Track Ten: When did Ben write the song "Video"?

Answer: During High School

The song was written about how his generation had nothing to represent itself with, so Ben and his mates decided to cling onto videos as a representation of their generation!
11. Track Eleven: What "is drawing near" in "The Last Polka"?

Answer: The End

This lyric is heard in the chorus- "Sha lai lai, sha lai lai, sha lai lai, the end is drawing near."
12. Track Twelve: The final track of the album is "Boxing." What is the track about?

Answer: An imaginary conversation between Muhammad Ali and Howard Cosell.

Ben wrote this song because he wanted to predict the sort of things Ali and Cosell would talk about.
13. Which of the following tracks were not cut from the "Ben Folds Five" album?

Answer: Song For The Dumped

At this point in their career, "Song For The Dumped" had not yet been written. A few years later Ben said that he regretted the other three songs being cut from the album.
14. Everyone knows that Robert Sledge plays an amazing bass solo in "Uncle Walter", but what is different about the sound of the bass during this solo?

Answer: He uses a distortion sound.

One of the great aspects of "Ben Folds Five" is that they are always trying something different. The distorted bass became a trademark of the band after this album.
15. Finally, who co-wrote "Alice Childress" with Ben Folds?

Answer: Anna Goodman

Anna wrote the original lyrics to the song. Ben then wrote the music and changed the lyrics around a little bit. At the time, he was interested in having people write him lyrics and then he would write music to the lyrics.
