Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Geoffrey Titley of the Supports was the drummer in which UK punk band?

Answer: The Desperate Bicycles

Titley was one of the very few Brisbane musicians of the late 70s (aside from the Saints and the Go-Betweens) to have done the impossible and perform in the UK. He later played in the likes of Antic Frantic, who became Tinytown when the band itself relocated to the UK.
2. The Swell Guys' infamous EP contained the song "Songs". Their A-side was eventually vocalised by Lyn Bardsley. Who sang the original version, which was rejected by the producer at Sunshine?

Answer: Cyril Culley

During the recording of the song, Cyril and Steven went to the Social Security close to the studio to submit their dole forms. Upon their arrival, they found Lyn had sung a version of the song after being asked by the producer whether or not she could sing.

As luck has it, she did. The original version has since been wiped. As it turned out, each member had a song to sing each, except guitarist Tony Milner, who shyed away at the 11th hour.
3. Which of these bands was Steven Pritchard NOT a drummer for?

Answer: The Hostages

Steven Pritchard played for many bands around Brisbane during its New Wave years, including The Gasmen, Swell Guys, Pinko, The Repairs, JFK and the Cuban Crisis, Xero, as well as the names listed. All this in a very small five-year period!
4. Corpse of Christ member and fanzine writer Greg Perkins was the groupie for which Brisbane band?

Answer: Pork

Regarded by their peers and audience alike for their sheer perversity and non-musicianship, Pork was proud of their "worst band in town" status. Greg often spent time in the backseat of Pork leader Paul Newsome's Datsun or at the band's rehearsals, plotting his future as a rock god.
5. Ed Wreckage and Warren Lamond, after playing together in Brisbane's most notorious punk band the Leftovers, formed which band in the early 80s?

Answer: Temporary Ornaments

After playing 60s garage songs in the Leftovers days, The Temporary Ornaments focused more on material stemming from the punk years. This was the only other band Warren Lamond played in, aside from making cameos in Pineapples from the Dawn of Time in the middle eighties.
6. Which band had three members named Greg?

Answer: Tex Deadly and the Dum Dums

Greg Perkins (as Tex Deadly), Greg Wadley and Greg Gilbert (as Des Johnson) were Brisbane's answer to the Cramps. With line-ups changing from show to show, the band also included Greg Wadley's younger brother Ian, Peter Jetnikoff, Clem Lukey, Cyril Culley and Marko Halstead. Perkins later used material from this band and adopted it into the songs that became The Beasts of Bourbon's "Axeman's Jazz".
7. Toe Suckers drummer Clare McKenna played drums in the Go-Betweens in 1980 upon the return of the band from the UK. Right?

Answer: Yes

Amid much controversy regarding her entry to the band (without the knowledge of bass player Grant McLennan who was still overseas), Clare did play one gig with the band at Baroona Hall, Petrie Terrace (American Independence day 1980) with Dave Tyrer, who quickly left to form the Poles in Sydney. Lindy Morrison ended up being their first official drummer, with Clare taking her place in Xero.
8. The Four Gods had a song about a famous French New Wave actor. Who was it?

Answer: Jean-Paul Belmondo

"Polo-neck sweater, that's him for sure Jean-Paul Belmondo". This was perhaps a friendly poke at The Go-Betweens' first single, which was named after another famous actor, Lee Remick.
9. Peter Loveday, Michael Elliott, Keryn Henry and Tony Hayes were members of which band?

Answer: Birds of Tin

Birds of Tin released a cassette EP called "Same Both Sides" in 1981. This inner-city band was the only band at the time who had a fulltime tambourine and woodblock player, who was, of course, Tony Hayes.
10. Which Mystery of Sixes song was nationally banned due to its controversial lyrical content?

Answer: Azaria

Mystery of Sixes also touched on other sensitive subjects with "Whisky a Go-Go", regarding the Fortitude Valley's famous club being firebombed in 1975 under mysterious circumstances.
11. Who was the only constant member of Zero/Xiro/Xerox/Xero?

Answer: Irena Luckus

From the many line-up changes starting in 1978 and ending in 1983, Irena was the only member who sang and played keyboards for the group 'till the bitter end. Later on, Irena was a member of the art collective ZIP and played in Existential Experiment and Airborne Toxic Event.
12. The split release cassette on Shake Music with Just Urbain and Kicks was wrapped in a tartan of which Scottish clan?

Answer: McLeod

Rod McLeod was a member of both bands. Makes sense, doesn't it?
13. Artist Gary Warner played saxophone in which band?

Answer: Out of Nowhere

Gary Warner did indeed play in this "Brelian proportioned" band, along with Graeme Hutchinson, Joe Borkowski, Tony Forde and Peter Walsh. They released one cassette with Pink and Blue and a single on Ed Kuepper and Ken West's Prince Melon label in 1982. The band played a small handful of shows locally, before relocating to Sydney to a mixed audience.
14. The Pits hailed from which side of town?

Answer: Eastside

The majority of band members came from the Camp Hill/Cooparooo/Carina area, which is indeed in the Eastside.
15. One of the last of the first generation punk bands Kicks got their name from a song by which artist?

Answer: Adam and the Ants

The B-side to the Adam and the Ants' single "Car Trouble" was indeed the inspiration behind the band formerly known as the Young Identities. The band played rarely, due to their disregard for their own amps and the amps of others.
16. Which recording label had bands such as The Pits, Curiosity Shop, This Five Minutes and Tangled Shoelaces?

Answer: Cubbyhouse

Peter Pit's label Cubbyhouse released a rather prolific amount of cassettes by the said bands from 1981 to 1984, as well as Pork, Tea for Two and Des Johnson. The only two vinyl releases were the lone 45s by This Five Minutes and Curiosity Shop.
17. Public Execution, along with Tangled Shoelaces, supported which infamous US punk band in their Brisbane shows?

Answer: Dead Kennedys

DK's singer Jello Biafra heard words of a very young punk band called Tangled Shoelaces. Sure, they were indeed young- but were they punk? Not according to Jello, who profusely apologized to the audience and realised that perhaps he didn't make the right choice. Kicks were meant to play support to the Dead Kennedys, but alas, a falling out with promoter Dave Darling prevented this from ever happening. That indeed is another question in itself!
18. The Upsets featured a guitarist/singer whose nom de punk derived from which famous brand of moped?

Answer: Vespa

Vespa went on to become a rent-a-punk on the Gold Coast's Warner Brothers Movie World theme park. He also appeared in a cheese commerical... but not as the cheese.
19. True or false: Sydney gave birth to a Ramones-inspired bubblegum punk band called The Hard-Ons. Wasn't there a Brisbane band with the same name playing in the late 70s?

Answer: Yes

Indeed there was! With names like Tim Hard-on, Fred Hard-on and Iggy Hard-on; the band had very different 9 to 5 jobs, such as Ambulance drivers and public servants. Weekend punks, perhaps?
20. Roger Norris rose to fame with his vibrato singing style in the Plug Uglies in the late 80s and early 90s. But what was his goth-inspired first band?

Answer: Missing Words

Missing Words certainly listened closely to their Joy Division records in their heyday, in 1982. The band disbanded quickly to become Other Voices, who are rather embarassing to listen to today- even Roger himself would think so. His brother Graeme played saxophone.
