I was in the second row of DeVos Hall in Grand Rapids, MI. to see Sammy Hagar for the second time as a solo performer. My first time seeing Sammy Hagar was when he was the lead singer for Van Halen at Wings Stadium in Kalamazoo, MI.
All Music Guide tells us that Sammy Hagar's first high-profile band was Montrose in the mid-70s. He was a solo act from 1976 until 1985, when he replaced David Lee Roth as the lead singer of Van Halen. That lasted for ten years and five platinum albums.
