Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Iggy Pop has played with many musicians, but every now and again one gets through under the radar. Which of the following collaborations never happened?

Answer: Patti Smith - wrote the song 'I'm a Conservative' with him.

Pop duetted with Deborah Harry on the "Well, Did You Evah" track on the Cole Porter tribute album "Red, Hot+Blue". Rollins provided some vocals for Pop's "Wild America" single and former Sex Pistol Jones played guitar on Iggy Pop's "Blah Blah Blah" (1986) and "Instinct" (1988) albums.
2. Beck likes a lot of different musical styles. But what of the following projects didn't actually happen?

Answer: Adam 'MCA' Yauch - collaborated with Beck on a remix for Jon Spencer.

Beck remixed Jon Spencer Blues Explosion's "Flavor" with Mike D in 1995, not with MCA. Jon Spencer returned the favor for "Flavor" by collaborating on "Diskobox", a track from Beck's "Odelay" (1996) album. Calvin Johnson sang back-up on "One Foot in the Grave" (1994), which was also released on Johnson's K Records label. Aphex Twin remixed Beck's "Devil's Haircut" and turned it into the freakout "Richard's Hairpiece".

In 2002 Beck wrote, performed and produced a few tracks for Marianne Faithful's "Kissin' Time" album.
3. Funkmeister George Clinton has done more collaborating than using his nose simply for breathing. But who is in league with Sir Nose d'Voidoffunk and never got his booty thoroughly shaken'? Which of the following is untrue?

Answer: James Brown - got remixed by Clinton on 'Livin' in America'.

Prince released Clinton's 1989 album "The Cinderella Theory" on his Paisley Park record label. Public Enemy's Flavor Flav and Chuck D guested on that album, on the track "Tweakin'". And Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers had his bands' album "Freaky Styley" produced by Clinton.

The only link between Clinton and James Brown is that they both worked with musicians like William 'Bootsy' Collins and his brother Phelps 'Catfish' Collins.
4. After his time in PiL, bassist Jah Wobble went on to work with several other musical legends. Later he worked for the London Underground, where he had a nervous breakdown through the intercom. So he got into music again. But he never did which of the following?

Answer: He rapped with Afrika Bambaataa.

U2's The Edge recorded an album with Wobble and Can's Holger Czukay in 1983 ("Snake Charmer"). Dolores from the Cranberries wailed a bit on Wobble's 1994 album "Take me to God". And Primal Scream's "Higher Than the Sun" ('91) was transformed by Wobble's thundering bass into "A Dub Symphony in Two Parts".
5. The late great Kirsty MacColl is famous for her collaboration with the Pogues on "Fairytale of New York" (1987). But she sang on quite a few more records you know. But which artist did she miss out on?

Answer: Elvis Costello

Although they both worked with the Pogues, Costello and MacColl's paths never crossed music-wise. She sang on the Happy Mondays' "Hallelujah (MacColl Mix)" (1990). She provided backing vocals for Morrissey's "Interesting Drug" (1989) single. And she sang on the Tom Tom Club 1991 album "Dark Sneak Love Action".
6. The members of the Wu-Tang Clan can be found almost everywhere. At times they are so thinly spread out that their quality standards go out the window and they collaborate with some unlikely 'artists'. But the numerous members of the Wu-Tang never got round to doing one of the following - or maybe they did but forgot about it afterwards:

Answer: Wrote a track for Michael Jackson.

Ol' Dirty Bastard aka. Osirius aka. Big Baby Jesus aka. Joe Bannanas aka. Dirt McGirt aka. Dirt Dog aka. Unique Ason worked with Mariah Carey on her "Fantasy" single (1995), which was basically a reworking of the Tom Tom Club's "Genius of Love". Method Man collaborated with Texas on a version of their "Say what you want" single, without a doubt one of the worst duets ever. And Ghostface Killah appeared on a remix of Puff Diddy's "Special Delivery".
7. Jello Biafra has worked with numerous acts since the Dead Kennedys split up. He worked with Mojo Nixon and the Toadliquors, D.O.A., NoMeansNo, with Alien Jourgenson as Lard, with Adrian Borland as the Witch Trials, Ice-T, Coldcut, Sepultura, Pigface, and the No W.T.O. Combo with Kim Thayil, Krist Novoselic and Gina Mainwal. He also recorded an album as Tumor Circus. Which of the following was his band on that one?

Answer: Steel Pole Bath Tub

In 1997 Levi's wanted to use the Dead Kennedys song "Holiday in Cambodia" in a commercial. Jello Biafra refused and the other three ex-members of the band sued him. They wrestled the rights to the Dead Kennedys back catalogue away from him and went on tour with former soap star Brandon Cruz on vocals.

A collaboration between Biafra and his former colleagues is not likely to ever happen again.
8. In 1992 the very successful German punk band Die Toten Hosen ('the Dead Trousers') released the album "Learning English, Lesson One". For this album they recorded cover versions of all their favourite punkrock hits and asked a lot of the original artists to join them. And a lot of them did as well. But who didn't?

Answer: Mark E. Smith, the Fall

The full line up was: Joey Ramone, Matt Dangerfield & 'Honest' John Plain (the Boys), Ronald Biggs (the train robber who recorded a single with ex-Pistols Cook & Jones), Jimmy Pursey (Sham 69), Nick Cash (999), Andy Ellison (Radio Stars), Knox (the Vibrators), TV Smith (the Adverts), Johnny Thunders, Cheetah Chrome (the Dead Boys), Arturo Bassick (the Lurkers), Wreckless Eric, Captain Sensible, Charlie Harper (UK Subs), Neil O'Connor (the Flys), Graeme Douglas (Eddie & the Hot Rods). What? No Johnny Rotten either?
9. The Icelandic chanteuse Björk changes collaborators for almost every new recording. Which of these cutting edge producers has she not worked with?

Answer: Clint Mansell (Mouse on Mars)

Other people the swan-wrapped singer has worked with are Nellee Hooper (Soul II Soul), Howie B, Talvin Singh, Jah Wobble, David Arnold, Eumir Deodato, Tricky, Matthew Herbert (Doctor Rockit), Drew Daniel (Matmos) and a load of others. Clint Mansell isn't even in Mouse on Mars by the way.

It was a bit of a trick question. He used to be in Pop Will Eat Itself and now he mainly does soundtracks ('Pi', 'Requiem for a Dream').
10. Former Velvet Underground member John Cale produced quite a few debut albums by seminal bands. Which of the following didn't he work on?

Answer: "Ramones" - Ramones

John Cale also worked with Patti Smith (debut album), Brian Eno, Nico, Squeeze (debut album), Super Furry Animals, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Terry Riley, oh and Lou Reed.
