Butler was a member of The Impressions in 1958 and sang lead on the recording of the romantic "For Your Precious Love". He left the group and re-emerged as a solo artist in the mid 1960s with such hits as "He Will Break Your Heart", and "Only The Strong Survive".

He was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame in 1991, and into the 21st century, had hosted a number of PBS TV music specials. He also has served as a Commissioner for Cook County, Illinois, and has been in that position since 1985.
2. What girl group of the 60s was Diana Ross a part of?

Answer: The Supremes

Diana chose to leave the group for a solo career in 1970, and quickly cashed in with "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", which was a remake of the Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrell hit of the 60s.

She also scored in the 70s with songs like "Touch Me In The Morning" (1973), "The Theme from "Mahogony" (she also co-starred in the film), "Love Hangover" (1976), and "Upside Down" (1980).

In films, in addition to "Mahogony", she also starred in "Lady Sings The Blues" and had a role in "The Wiz".
3. Which group did Peter Cetera depart to attempt his solo career?

Answer: Chicago

Cetera was a founding member of Chicago in 1967, and sang lead on a good portion of their hits between 1969 and 1985. Cetera had released a solo album as early as 1981, but toured and recorded with Chicago through the summer of 1985, when he abruptly left the group in a dispute over time off to record another solo album.

After leaving the group, Peter recorded "The Glory Of Love" which was the theme song for the movie "The Karate Kid".

This became a number one song and was nominated for a Grammy award in 1986. He proceeded to record a number of very successful duets with top female artists, such as "The Next Time I Fall" with Amy Grant, "After All", with Cher, (this song was used on the soundtrack of the film "Chances Are"), and also "Feels Like Heaven" with Chaka Khan.

He didn't have much success in the U. S. after that but continued to have hits in his home country of Canada well into the 1980s.
6. Frankie Valli is a well known solo artist. Which 60s group did he record with?

Answer: The Four Seasons

Frankie Valli broke through with The Four Seasons in 1962 with "Sherry" and "Big Girls Don't Cry" in 1962, and continued to have hits with the group throughout the 60s. While the group's popularity waned in the late 60s Frankie continued recording and succeeded with songs like "I Make A Fool Of Myself", and "To Give". In the 70s he hit paydirt with "Swearin To God", "My Eyes Adored You", and "Our Day Will Come", and hit the pinnacle in 1978 when he was asked to record the theme song for the movie version of "Grease" and it became a number one hit. He then scored on his own with such notables as "Lonely Teenager", "Runaround Sue", and "The Wanderer". Mayfield left the group in 1970 to pursue a solo singing and writing career.

He left to form the group Traffic in the late 60s and then he went on to join Blind Faith (with Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker), and after they broke up, he played for a number of other groups before reforming Traffic in and then breaking up again in 1977. Confusing.

He released a solo album in that year, but no songs charted. Finally in 1981, he charted with a song from his next album.

12. Rod Stewart's enormous solo career was preceded by a stint with this British group. Name them.

He followed up with probably his best known song as a solo artist called "Stand By Me" which made the U.S. Top ten in 1961, and again a quarter century later in 1986 when it was re-released.
15. Don Henley's solo career was preceded by a ten year stint with one of the most successful groups of the 70s. Name them.

Part of one of the most successful rock groups in history, Henley was part of the group from their formation in 1971, till their breakup in 1980. His voice can be heard on such classics as "Hotel California", "The Best Of My Love" ,and "One Of These Nights" among many others.

After the breakup of the group Henley went solo, and scored in the 80s with "Dirty Laundry, "The Boys Of Summer", "The End of The Innocence", and "All She Wants To Do Is Dance". Answer: Creedence Clearwater Revival

Of course John was one of the leaders of Creedence Clearwater Revival, one of the most popular bands of the late 60's and early 70s. Starting with "Proud Mary", and "Susie Q", they had a string of Top 20 hits during that period. Unfortunately, an internal dispute forced the group to part ways in 1973. Fogerty began his solo career shortly thereafter and released a couple of songs under the title of The Blue Ridge Rangers, but had only moderate success.

He then released a song called "Rockin All Over The World" in 1975, under his own name, and immediately hit the Billboard Top 40.

He had his best success in 1985, with the Top ten song "The Old Man Down The Road", as well as "Rock and Roll Girls", and "Centerfield". Put me in coach!
17. Stevie Nicks lent her voice to this supergroup of the 70s before her solo career began. Name them.

Answer: Fleetwood Mac

With Fleetwood Mac since 1975, Stevie can be heard on all their major hits, starting with "Rhiannon", and continuing with "Dreams" and "Go Your Own Way". The group had many other hits with Stevie singing lead. She decided to try a solo album in the 1981, and came up with "Stop Draggin My Heart Around", which she performed with Tom Petty.

This was followed by "Edge Of Seventeen". In 1983 she had another hit called "Stand Back". She continued to write and perform through the 90s and into the new century.

Answer: Genesis

Genesis of course. Phil joined Genesis way back in 1970. He became the lead singer after the departure of Peter Gabriel in 1976. The group had met with minimal success in the U.S. Even though the group's first album with Collins fronting called "Trick Of The Tail" made the Top 40, they weren't very well known.

In 1980 they released an album called "Duke" and one of the cuts was called "Misunderstanding". Bingo! A hit. They were on their way. The group scored later in the decade with "That's All", and their most successful album "Invisible Touch" which yielded no less than six U.S. Top 40 hits. Collins in the mean time was building a simultaneous solo career starting in 1982 with the release of a remake of The Supremes' "You Can't Hurry Love".

Then, between 1984 and 1989, he scored seven U.S. Billboard number one hits. Included in these were "Against All Odds", "One More Night", "Sussudio", "Separate Lives", another remake, this time The Mindbenders' "Groovy Kind Of Love", "Two Hearts", and "Another Day In Paradise".
19. Michael McDonald left this very successful group of the 70s for his solo career. What group was it?

Answer: The Doobie Brothers

McDonald was a back-up member of Steely Dan when he was recruited for The Doobie Brothers in 1975. His husky voice can be heard on such notable numbers as "Takin It To The Streets", "Minute By Minute", and "What A Fool Believes" (for which he and the group were awarded a Grammy in 1980). McDonald went on to a solo career after the demise of the group, and hit with "I Keep Forgettin'" in 1982, as well as "Sweet Freedom" which was part of the soundtrack for the film "Running Scared" in 1986.

He also collaborated with Patti LaBelle that year and hit the top of the U.S. charts with "On My Own".

The Rasperries were a popular group for a time in the early 70s and had hits with Eric out front, such as "Go All The Way", and "I Want To Be With You". After the breakup of the group in 1975, Carmen went on to have a quite successful solo career scoring in 1976 with "Never Gonna Fall In Love Again", and the Billboard number two smash "All By Myself". Eric recorded a number of other singles in the late 70s and early 80s which charted but didn't come back to the forefront until 1987, when the song "Hungry Eyes" from the "Dirty Dancing" soundtrack made it to number four on the Billboard charts.
