Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We'll start off with The Beatles. What color was their submarine?

Answer: Yellow

"Yellow Submarine" was originally released as a single by the group in 1966. It won an Ivor Novello Award in the U.K. for the highest certified sales of any record in the U.K that year. It was almost as successful in the U.S., reaching number two on the Billboard Hot 100 charts.

The song itself was off the album called "Revolver" which was also released in 1966. In addition, it was also the title song from the 1968 animated film of the same name, and appeared on the album, making it one for the few Beatles recordings to appear on two different albums.
2. What color was the velvet in Bobby Vinton's 1963 big hit?

Answer: Blue

Bobby Vinton's version of "Blue Velvet" was a U.S. number one hit (Billboard Hot 100) for three weeks in the fall of 1963. Interestingly, when the song was released that year, it didn't make the British charts. It was re-released in 1990 and inexplicably made it to number two in the U.K. 27 years after being originally released. Tony Bennett had released a version of this song way back in 1951, and it peaked at number 16 on the U.S. Singles charts, but Vinton's version was by far the most successful.
3. The "sweet" Rolling Stones song that fits this category has what color in it?

Answer: Brown

"Brown Sugar" was the first single from The Rolling Stones' 1971 album called "Sticky Fingers". The lyrics of the song have little to do with sugar though. It is more a song about promiscuity, interracial sex and drug use. Despite that, it became a major hit for the Stones that year, going all the way to the top of the U.S. charts, and becoming a number two hit in the U.K.

It also made it onto Rolling Stone Magazine's "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" with a number 490 placing.
4. Procol Harum had a major hit in the 1960s singing about this color. Which color?

Answer: White

"A Whiter Shade of Pale" was the 1967 chart busting tune from Procol Harem, a British based band. The song was a super hit in the U.K., as well as an international success. It went to number one on the U.K. singles charts and stayed there for six weeks.

It was a number five hit in the U.S. on the Billboard charts. It also reached number one in Germany, Ireland, and Australia. Just how much of an icon the song really became was where Rolling Stone Magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" placed the song.

It came in at number 47.
5. Booker T. and the M.G.s had a number of instrumental hits during the 1960s' but only one song fit the category. What color am I looking for?

Answer: Green

"Green Onions" was an enduring 1962 for this instrumental group out of Memphis, Tennessee. The song entered the U.S. Hot 100 in the fall of 1962 and stayed there for 16 weeks, peaking at number three on the charts. The song has appeared extensively over the years in film and television, as well as commercials.

Interestingly, it did not chart in the U.K. in 1962, but did hit the charts 18 years later, in 1980, when it was included on the soundtrack of the motion picture, "Quadrophenia". The song is listed on Rolling Stone Magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" at number 181.
6. Los Bravos had their biggest hit in the 1960s with this color song. What color is the one needed here?

Answer: Black

"Black Is Black" was the Top 5 hit that Los Bravos put together in 1966. It went to number two in the U.K, and number four in the U.S. on the Billboard Hot 100 charts and sold over a million copies worldwide. The group was actually a Spanish beat group, put together in Madrid Spain; the remnants of two other bands from earlier in the decade.
7. Shirley Bassey bellowed about this color in a 1964 movie hit. What color?

Answer: Gold

"Goldfinger" was the title song from the 1964 James Bond film of the same name. Bassey, a native of Wales, sang the title song for the film, and got her only U.S. Top Ten hit, peaking at number eight on the Billboard charts. The song was surprisingly produced by George Martin, who amazingly found the time to do it.

After all, he was very busy with another British act which came stateside in 1964. Hmmm..who could that have been?
8. Let's go all the way back to the early 1960s. What color was the Marcels' moon?

Answer: Blue

"Blue Moon" by the Marcels, was a 1961 adaptation of a song written way back in 1934 by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart. The song has been used in numerous motion pictures since that time, and has been recorded by many famous and diverse artists, not the least of which would be Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Sam Cooke, Bob Dylan, Dean Martin, Sha-Na-Na, and Rod Stewart among others.

The best rock and roll adaptation was that of the Marcels, who took the song to number one on the Billboard U.S. charts, and sold over a million copies.
9. Gary Lewis and The Playboys had success with this colorful hit in the mid 1960s. What was the color in the title?

Answer: Green

"Green Grass" was a Gary Lewis and the Playboys hit from 1966. It was the last of seven straight hits for the group to reach the U.S. Billboard Hot 100's Top 10. It peaked at number eight. Gary went into the military to serve shortly thereafter, and was never able to re-capture the tremendous success he and his group enjoyed in the mid 1960s.
10. Neil Diamond recorded a song early in the 1970s which qualifies for this quiz. What song color did he sing about?

Answer: Blue

"Song Sung Blue" was a cut from Diamond's "Moods" album. It was released in 1972 and went to number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts, as well as number 14 in the U.K. The song was nominated for two Grammy Awards in 1972, but lost both awards to Roberta Flack and her rendition of "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face".
11. What's the color of Bob Welch's girl's eyes?

Answer: Ebony

"Ebony Eyes" was a release from the Bob Welch album "French Kiss". Welch, a former member of Fleetwood Mac, went out on a solo career in 1977 and scored with "Sentimental Lady". "Ebony Eyes" was the second single released off the album and it reached number 14 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts in 1978.
12. What color was Christie's "river" in 1970?

Answer: Yellow

"Yellow River" was a 1970 single released by the British based group Christie. The song itself was written by band leader Jeff Christie, and was offered to The Tremeloes. The Tremeloes did record the song but after they decided against releasing it, Jeff and his group decided to release it themselves.

After some minor changes and over-dubbing of voices, the song came out and was an international success. It only reached number 23 in the U.S., but was a number one hit in the U.K. as well as Ireland, The Netherlands and Norway.

It also went to number two in Germany, and number four in Switzerland.
13. Chris DeBurgh had his biggest hit singing about a lady. What color was she wearing?

Answer: Red

"Lady in Red" was a 1986 hit for the Argentinean born British singer. The song was an international success, hitting number one in no less than 25 countries. The song was allegedly written about his first wife, Diane, although he would never confirm this. It comes from DeBurgh's "Into the Light" album.
14. Prince makes his appearance on our quiz with his precipitating song of the 1980s. What color am I talking about now?

Answer: Purple

"Purple Rain" is considered a power ballad, recorded by Prince and The Revolution and released in conjunction with a soundtrack album and film of the same name. The song, considered one of his finest, was a number two hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts. The song appears on Rolling Stone Magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Hits of All Time" at number 143.
15. What color is Bruce Springsteen's Cadillac?

Answer: Pink

"Pink Cadillac" was a song written by Bruce Springsteen early in his career. He recorded it with the E Street Band in the early 1980s, but it never seemed to find its way onto any of his album, nor was he inclined to release it as a single. He did, however, use it as a B-side recording for "Dancing in the Dark" after bumping it from his "Born in the USA" album. Natalie Cole got a hold of it, and recorded it in 1988. She had a big hit with it, reaching number five on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts.
