Levine and Brown got the idea for "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Around the Ole Oak Tree" in a 1971 article they read in The New York Post. While the article talked about tying a white handkerchief around a tree, they decided to tweak the imagery in order to allow the song to flow smoother. However, yellow ribbon or white handkerchief, the song made it to #1 on the US charts in 1973, marking a landslide hit for Tony Orlando and Dawn.
