Cryptic Song Titles Trivia Quiz

Like all cryptics, the answer is in the clue. For example "The Pedal-Power Carol" would be "The Pushbike Song"! As a bonus, I have thrown in a tip to the artists at no charge.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The set of risers and newels to paradise take some climbing to reach what sounds like a heavy mineral airship. What song is this?

Answer: Stairway to Heaven

A riser and a newel are part of a stair, therefore risers and newels are many stairs (stairway). Paradise can also be called heaven. Heavy mineral refers to lead (Led), whilst the airship refers to the Zeppelin. "Sound/s like" generally refers to possible different spelling of a word that sounds the same.

"Stairway to Heaven" is one of the few songs that I have heard played not only at funerals, but also at weddings. Obviously the master of ceremonies had never sat down and listened to the lyrics. Also, this is one of the most "covered" songs that I know of. It has even been performed by Rolf Harris. "Tie me kangaroo down sport"! Personally, my opinion is that Led Zeppelin's version will always be the best.
2. Reverberations to "meddle" with the pinky Dolf had to be reset. Name the tune.

Answer: Echoes

To reverberate is to echo, and the "meddle" was thrown in as a clue for Pink Floyd fans. The other clue was around the words "pinky Dolf" followed by had to reset. To reset is to rearrange, and if you rearrange these letters you can come up with the artists. Any generation can listen to this band. Lie back, relax, have a deep breath, and enjoy "The air that we breathe". My absolute favourite LP was "Meddle".
3. An Italian lady finds herself to be in gravidity, or so it sounds for a pair of rearranged graduates. What song is described?

Answer: Mamma Mia

The double clue in that "Mamma Mia" is a very well-known Italian saying. As for a lady finding herself in a state of gravidity, she is pregnant and within nine months she can say "me a mamma". A graduate is generally referred to in cryptic terms as a "BA", so therefore a couple of graduates are both BAs, which gives you BABA, which when rearranged, gives you ABBA. Of course, ABBA is a Swedish pop group that has had worldwide success.
4. Part of "Simon eyed" is what makes the world go around for Floyd, who is feeling pretty in his favorite color. Choose the correct song.

Answer: Money

Once again, two clues give the same answer. Part of the letters in "Simon eyed" point to the answer; in this case, the last three letters of Si(mon) as well as the first two letters of (ey)ed gives you the song title ("Money"). Of course ,we also know the saying "money makes the world go around".

Pink Floyd sang this song, hence Floyd. Add that to the phrase "(pretty in) pink", which is a relatively common saying.
5. We travel in reverse to see the Kremlin and surroundings, only to find out that our guide's name sounds like a bunch of Coleopteras. What song is this?

Answer: Back in the U.S.S.R.

To travel in reverse is to "back", whilst we all know where the Kremlin is (Russia, former USSR). The words "sounds like or similar" refer to possible different spellings. In this case, a beetle is a member of the Coleoptera family, hence the Beatles were the final clue.
6. Recompiled used blue e-hoses serve as an Elvis masterpiece. Pick the correct tune.

Answer: Blue Suede Shoes

To recompile something is to reset it, so if you recompile the letters of "used blue e-hoses", you can come up with "blue suede shoes". I will always remember Elvis as a 20-30 year old. To me, Elvis did not die, he just "left the building".
7. The fourth Greek met at the rising of the sun to see if Helen was ready. What song is being described?

Answer: Delta Dawn

The fourth letter of the Greek alphabet is delta, and he rising of the sun is the dawn. The extra clue was "Helen was ready", which referred to the singer Helen Reddy.
8. He suffered a delusional psychotic disorder due to an the extremely dark day of rest. Which song is this?

Answer: Paranoid

The clue was straightforward and of course extremely dark (black), combined with a day of rest (Sabbath). This gives you Ozzie and his band of talented yet totally "different" people, Black Sabbath. The band performed the song "Paranoid".
9. Birds of peace weep according to some royal persons. Name the song.

Answer: When Doves Cry

Getting the hang of it? A bird of peace is a dove, and to weep is to cry . The artist is obviously Prince. Not my cup of tea, but he is a multi-millionaire, so good luck to him.
10. People who want to fly high relax with their feet up. Which song is described?

Answer: Take It Easy

Funny, I always thought the song was "Taking it Easy", until I read the record cover (yes, I am that old that I do have records) only to fInd that it was actually "Take It Easy". This was performed by the band that definitely flew extremely high, The Eagles.
11. Be as you are, Jimmy the cloth-mender. Really, the clue answers the question. What is the cryptic song title?

Answer: B.S.U.R.

You said the answer when you read the question. The bonus was that it was sung by James Taylor, and it was off the album "Flag". Sorry to give away a secret, but this man is the best cover singer in his genre--my opinion only, and I don't want to quibble about this part.
12. The major thoroughfare to Hades is used by the camper as well as the electrician. Which song is described?

Answer: Highway to Hell

Is this one of those questions that make you kick yourself when you see the answer? Campers generally use A/C power supply, whereas the electrician generally deals with D/C, or direct current supply. R.I.P. Bon Scott. The thoroughfare is a highway, and Hades is sometimes another term for hell.
13. I am being invaded by what sounds like insects: 911, 000, 111, plus more. Which cryptic soundtrack title is this?

Answer: Help!

All numbers are emergency numbers to officials (Australia's is 000; the United States' is 911; and New Zealand's is 111). All are asking for "Help", which was supplied by the Beatles.
14. A nocturnal creature escapes from a place of horror by a cut of beef taking it easy. What title is this?

Answer: Bat Out of Hell

The answer is straightforward. A nocturnal creature refers to a bat, while the place of horror is hell. A cut of beef is "meat", and to take it easy is to "loaf". Put those together and you get Meat Loaf, the singer who performed the song "Bat Out of Hell".
15. What song that everyone sings is about tri-visually impaired rodents?

Answer: 3 Blind Mice

Tri, tre, and triple, all mean the same thing--three. Visually impaired refers to blind, and the rodents are mice. If the artist is not you, I apologise, I thought everybody has/had sung this song at one stage of their lives.
