Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Fronted by showman Ian Anderson Jethro Tull came into being in 1967. In 1968 they recorded their first album which was blues/jazz oriented. What was the name of this album released in October 1968?

Answer: This Was

The album contains 10 tracks four of which are instrumental. The lead vocals of the album are shared by Ian Anderson and Mick Abrahams. The latter left the band, before the album was released, and formed the band Blodwyn Pig. "Stand Up", released in 1969, was the group's second album; "Living in the Past" and "Through the Years" are compilation albums released in 1972 and 1998 respectively.
2. The title of the album is the same as the title of chapter 7 of Kenneth Grahame's "The Wind in the Willows". Which colourful group, with Syd Barrett on vocals, released the album in August 1967?

Answer: Pink Floyd

The album was called "Piper at the Gates of Dawn". The other members of Pink Floyd, at the time the album was released, were Roger Waters, Nick Mason and Richard Wright. Most of the tracks are written by Syd Barrett. Tracks like "Astronomy Domine" and "Interstellar Drive" are early glimpses into what kind of music the group would go on to produce. Black Sabbath was formed in 1968, Stone Roses in 1983 and White Stripes in 1997.
3. The Who started life as the Detours but changed their name in 1964. What was the name of the first album released by the Who in 1965 that has the same name as their first singles hit?

Answer: My Generation

The Who, Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, John Entwhistle and Keith Moon, released the album in December. Most of the songs are written by Pete Townsend and include "My Generation", "The Kids Are Alright" and "Much Too Much". "A Quick One" was their second album which was released in December 1966. "American Woman" and "Canned Wheat" are albums by Canadian group Guess Who.
4. This group, in my opinion the best ever, started life as the successors to the Yardbirds and ran into a lot of trouble with the cover of the album, showing a dirigible in flames, deemed as "insulting and dishonouring the family name". What is the name of the album that was released in 1969?

Answer: Led Zeppelin

The album cover is a cropped-up picture of the "Hindenburg Disaster" that happened in 1937. Countess Frau Eva von Zeppelin, granddaughter of the maker of the Zeppelin, threatened with court action the group over the use of the name and the photograph. Led Zeppelin stayed together until the untimely death of drummer John Bonham in 1980.

They produced nine studio albums and the last one, "Coda", was released in 1982.
5. We do have a picture of the front cover of the very first album of a group from Birmingham, England. What is the name of the album that unsurprisingly bears the name of the group, released in February 1970?

Answer: Black Sabbath

Black Sabbath was formed in 1968. The original line-up was Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, Bill Ward and Ozzy Osbourne. The album contains seven tracks with my personal favourites being "The Wizard","N.I.B" and "Evil Woman". The release of this album marks the beginning of the "heavy metal" genre of rock music. Black Widow is from Leicester, Deep Purple from Hertford and King Crimson from London.
6. No need for introductions for this group. Once again we have an eponymous album that was released in England in April 1964. What is the name of the album that was released in the US in May of the same year with the additional title of "England's Newest Hit Makers"?

Answer: Rolling Stones

The Rolling Stones was formed in 1962 in London, England. The line-up on their first album was Mick Jagger, Brian Jones, Keith Richards, Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts. The Stones is one of the most successful and prolific performers of rock music.
7. Here we have a debut album with a poser for the title. What was the question asked by Jimi Hendrix in 1967?

Answer: Are You Experienced

The Jimi Hendrix Experience, formed in London in 1966, consisted of Jimi, Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding. The trio made three albums together before Noel Redding left the band. "Are You Experienced" contains 11 tracks starting with "Foxy Lady" on side one and ending with "Are You Experienced?" on side two. "Axis: Bold as Love" was the group's second studio album and "Electric Ladyland" the third. "Who Are You" is an album by The Who.
8. Now we have an "electrifying" album from an "electrifying" band. What was AC/DC's first International album release in 1976?

Answer: High Voltage

AC/DC was formed in Australia in 1973 by brothers Malcolm and Angus Young who had emigrated there from Scotland. The international release of "High Voltage" was a mixture of the first two Australian releases, "High Voltage" and "T.N.T". The line-up for this album included the brothers Young, Bon Scott, Mark Evans and Phil Rudd. "High Voltage" was first released in Australia in 1975, "Powerage" was released in 1978, "Balance of Power" is an ELO album released in 1988 and "Sabotage" by Black Sabbath in 1975.
9. We have a debut album with a question as the title. Which American group was asking "Do You Believe in Magic" in 1965?

Answer: Lovin Spoonful

The album contains twelve tracks some of which are "Do You Believe in Magic", "Did You Ever Have to Make up Your Mind?", "Younger Girl" and "On the Road Again". The line-up of the group at the time was John Sebastian, Steve Boone, Joe Butler and Zal Yanovsky. My personal favourite song from the Lovin Spoonful is "Summer in the City" which was released as a single and is also a track on the album "Hums of the Lovin' Spoonful".
10. Here is a Canadian band. Once again we have an eponymous album and since this is the last question of the quiz we are going to give the answer away. What is the name of the band that goes by the initials BTO and had their first album release in 1973?

Answer: Bachman-Turner Overdrive

Bachman-Turner Overdrive's line-up for the album was Randy Bachman, C.F. Turner, Robbie Bachman and Tim Bachman. The album has 8 tracks that include "Blue Collar", "Gimme Your Money Please" and "Thank You for the Feelin". BTO had great success with their next two releases, "BTO 2" and "Not Fragile" that made them a favourite with the heavy metal fans.
