quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The "Houses of the Holy" album cover opens up just like a book. The outer cover of the album shows several naked children crawling up a rocky landscape. What colour hair do the children have?

Answer: Golden

The outer cover was photographed on the famous Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland. Although the cover shows more than ten golden-haired children clambering over the rocks, there were only two children in the shoot, a boy and a girl. The children, real life brother and sister, did have natural golden hair.
2. The inner cover shows a man offering one of the children as sacrifice. What is the name of the castle, which is near the Causeway, where the photograph was taken?

Answer: Dunluce

Duluce is a medieval castle, now ruined, that stands on a rocky outcrop in country Antrim in Northern Ireland. The idea of the cover came from Aubrey Powell of Hipgnosis, a London based art design group, that designed a lot of rock album covers. The photo shoot took ten days and the photographs were taken during dawn and dusk. Blarney castle can be found near Cork in the republic of Ireland. Both Glamis and Dalkeith are Scottish castles.
3. The album is the first Led Zeppelin work that contained the lyrics of the songs. On which part of the album were the lyrics printed?

Answer: On the sleeve

The lyrics were printed on the album sleeve. Side one lyrics were printed on one side and side two on the reverse of the sleeve. The album name was used as the header of side one and its mirror image as the header for page two. Both inner and outer covers of the album do not have anything written on them. To learn the name of the group and the title of the album you need to pull out the sleeve.
4. Now that we know a lot about the album's design it is time to learn a little about the songs. The album has eight tracks, four on each side. The first song on side one contains the following lyrics "California sunlight, sweet Calcutta rain / Honolulu starbright _______ ". What completes the lyric which happens to be the name of the song?

Answer: The Song Remains the Same

The opening lyrics of "The Song Remains the Same" are "I had a dream - crazy dream / Anything I wanted to know / Any place I needed to go". On this song Robert Plant provides the vocals, Jimmy Page guitars, John Paul Jones bass and John Bonham drums. The other three options are tracks on the album "Led Zeppelin IV".
5. On which track of the album does John Paul Jones use a Mellotron?

Answer: The Rain Song

John Paul Jones uses a mellotron as well as a bass guitar. The song opens with the lines "This is the springtime of my loving - the second season I am to know / You are the sunlight in my growing - so little warmth I felt before." The mellotron is an electronic keyboard instrument programmed to produce the tape-recorded sounds of musical instruments.

The other three options are tracks on the album "Presence".
6. What is the title of the Reggae-influenced song on the album?

Answer: D'yer Mak'er

The title "D'yer Make'er" is a word play on "Jamaica" thus the Reggae influence of the song. This was released as a single with moderate success. On the album sleeve, just after the lyrics of the song, there is this sentence "(Whatever happened to Rosie and the Originals)?".

This is a reference to an American group of the sixties. The other three options are tracks on the "Led Zeppelin III" album.
7. On the song "The Ocean" who is not credited with backing vocals?

Answer: Jimmy

The credits on the sleeve read: Vocals - Robert Plant, Guitars - Jimmy Page
Bass - John Paul Jones, Drums - John Bonham and Backing vocals - Robert, John Paul and John. Maybe Jimmy's voice is not that great!
8. Of which track is the chorus: "You know it's alright / I said it's alright / You know it's all in my heart / You'll be my only, my one and only / Is that the way it should start?"?

Answer: Dancing Days

"Dancing Days" is credited as written by Page/Plant. It was inspired by an Indian tune that the two heard while visiting Bombay. The track was released as a single with "Over the Hills and Far Away" as the B-side. The opening lines of the song are: "Dancing days are here again / As the summer evenings grow.". The other three options are tracks on the "Led Zeppelin II" album.
9. On which track does John Paul Jones use grand piano, synthesiser piano and synthesised bass?

Answer: No Quarter

"No Quarter" was credited as written by Jones/Page/Plant. The opening lines are: "Close the doors, put out the light / You know they won't be home tonight". The sound synthesiser is an electronic musical instrument that imitates other musical instruments. The other three options are tracks on the album "Physical Graffiti".
10. Which song on the album begins with the lines: "Hey lady - you got the love I need / oh Maybe - more than enough / oh Darling Darling walk a while with me / - oh you've got so much - ".?

Answer: Over the Hills and Far Away

"Over the Hills and Far Away" is credited to Page/Plant. John Paul only played bass on this track! The title does not appear in the lyrics. The other three options are from the album "In Through the Out Door".
