Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Emma Bunton entered the world of showbiz at an early age, as a child model and actress. Which of these things did she NOT appear in during her pre-Spice Girls days?

Answer: An episode of 'Coronation Street'

Emma did appear in 'Eastenders' as a teenage mugger, and police drama 'The Bill' as a prostitute, but not 'Coronation Street'. Because of her light blonde hair and blue eyes, she was an ideal choice for the Milky Bar Kid's girlfriend in a Milky Bar ad.

As a teenager, she appeared in a 'Top Chat' photo story as a girl with a crush on her karate teacher, and an anti-smoking campaign with the headline 'she smells like an ashtray and she stinks'.
2. In an interview with 'Smash Hits' magazine, Emma claimed that she was 18, making her year of birth 1978. However, what is her actual date of birth?

Answer: 21st January 1976

Both Emma and bandmate Geri Halliwell lied about their ages in the interview, claiming they were 18 and 22 respectively (Geri, the oldest Spice Girl, was actually 24). A later issue of 'Smash Hits' featured Emma in their 'Biscuit Tin' interview, where the pop star being interviewed had to answer random questions pulled out of a biscuit tin. One of these asked her why she lied about her age, to which Emma replied, "I think a lady can lie about her age whenever she bloomin' well wants."
3. What form of exercise did Emma's mother Pauline teach?

Answer: Martial arts

Specifically, Pauline Bunton was a karate instructor - if you watch the video for the Spice Girls' 'Mama', you'll see her in a gi, along with a bunch of students. She gave Emma lessons in Goju, a type of karate from Okinawa. She also gave the other Spice Girls a few self-defence lessons.
4. When the final line-up of the Spice Girls was put together by Chris and Bob Herbert, their first managers, they lived together in a house in Maidenhead. Emma was not among them, and in fact, was brought in to replace one of the members. Who did she replace?

Answer: Michelle Stephenson

Michelle Stephenson was the Pete Best of the Spice Girls. She was the first girl to be picked for the group, and shared a room with Victoria Adams. There was friction between her and the rest of the group, as they felt she had a privileged and lazy attitude, and spent too much time sunbathing instead of practising.

Another singer, Abigail Kas, was considered as a replacement, but was turned down. The Spice Girls' singing teacher, Pepi Lemer, knew Emma from the Sylvia Young stage school and suggested her as a replacement for Michelle.

She passed her audition and immediately got on with the other girls, and the rest is history.
5. With which band did Emma team up to release her first solo single, a cover of Edie Brickell's 'What I Am'?

Answer: Tin Tin Out

Tin Tin Out were a dance/pop duo consisting of producers Darren Stokes and Lindsey Edwards. They had also worked with London singer Shelley Nelson on a cover of the Sundays' 'Here's Where the Story Ends' in 1998, which won an Ivor Novello award. In 1999, the remaining Spice Girls all released solo material, with Emma and Tin Tin Out's collaboration peaking at Number 2, with former bandmate Geri Halliwell's 'Lift Me Up\ keeping her off the top spot.

The song featured on both Emma's solo album, 'A Girl Like Me', and Tin Tin Out's second album, 'Eleven to Fly'.
6. Which member of R'n'B boy band Damage was Emma's on/off partner during the '00s?

Answer: Jade Jones

Jade Jones and Emma got together in 1998, but split the following year. They had an on/off relationship for several years and she was also linked with other celebrities such as footballer Rio Ferdinand and Justin Timberlake, formerly of N'Sync. In 2007, Emma and Jade had a son together, named Beau, and a second son, Tate, followed in 2011.

Damage had several hits in the '90s and as well as Jones, they also consisted of Andrez Harriott, Noel Simpson, Rahsaan J Bromfield and Corée Richards. After Damage split up, Jade found work as a chef. All Damage members except Corée Richards appeared on the second series of ITV's 'The Big Reunion'.
7. What was the name of Emma's second album, released in 2004?

Answer: Free Me

Although the Spice Girls had parted company with manager Simon Fuller as a group, he managed Emma as a solo artist, and she signed a deal with his record company, 19 Recordings, after being dropped by Virgin. 'Free Me' was released on 19 Records and had a retro feel to it, inspired by the Motown records that Emma's parents played when she was a child. The singles released from it were 'Free Me', 'Maybe', 'I'll Be There' and a cover of Brazilian singer Marcos Valles' 'Os Grilos', called 'Crickets Sing for Anamaria'.

('19' is an album by Adele, and 'Rockferry' and 'Endlessly' are both by Welsh singer Duffy.)
8. True or false: Emma has appeared in Bollywood films.

Answer: True

Believe it or not, this is true! Emma appeared in the 2005 romcom 'Pyaar Mein Twist' as Kylie Milligan, an international film star who appears at a wedding at the end of the film. She also had a minor role as Tabitha Gagoh in 'Chocolate', a 2005 thriller based on 'The Usual Suspects'. Louis Theroux made a documentary about her time in India called 'Emma Goes to Bollywood'.

She was offered three films to appear in and picked 'Pyaar Mein Twist', and was later asked to appear in 'Chocolate'.
9. Emma featured on bandmate Melanie Chisholm's album of songs from musicals, 'Stages'. On which song did they duet?

Answer: I Know Him So Well

'I Know Him So Well' is probably the most well-known song from the musical 'Chess', a collaboration between Tim Rice and Abba's Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson. It is a duet between Svetlana, the ex-wife of Russian chess champion Anatoly, and Florence, Anatoly's mistress.

It was originally sung by Barbara Dickson and Elaine Paige in the roles of Svetlana and Florence respectively; the Spice Girls' version has Melanie Chisholm singing Florence's lines and Emma singing Svetlana's.
10. Emma released an album of covers, 'My Happy Place', in 2019. Which Spice Girls song featured on it?

Answer: 2 Become 1

Robbie Williams also sang on Emma's version of '2 Become 1'. Jade Jones duetted with her on 'You're All I Need to Get By', originally by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, and Will Young also appeared on 'I Only Want to Be with You', originally by Dusty Springfield.

Other covers included Madison Avenue's 'Don't Call Me Baby', which gave me the idea for the title of this quiz, and Norah Jones' 'Come Away with Me'. The album also featured an original song, 'Baby Please Don't Stop'.
