Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In mid-1960 the Everly Brothers produced their biggest-ever hit that topped the Billboard Charts for five weeks, and for seven in the UK. In 1989 country singer Reba McEntire covered the song and took it to the top of the Billboard Top Country Singles Chart.

Answer: Cathy's Clown

"Çathy's Clown" was the first and only number one hit for the Everly Brothers after switching to Warner Brothers following three years at Cadence Records. In the UK Charts, however, two more number ones were recorded the next year with "Walk Right Back" and "Temptation". On Billboard "Cathy's Clown" was ranked the number three record for 1960 behind "Theme From a Summer Place" and "He'll Have to Go".
2. The Billboard number two hit for 1959 was a Bobby Darin smash that topped the Billboard Charts for nine weeks and was number one in the UK for two. It was a song based on a 1928 play "The Threepenny Opera" which Bobby saw in Greenwich Village and decided to record the lead song. Louis Armstrong made it a top twenty hit in 1956.

Answer: Mack the Knife

"Mack the Knife" was headed only by "The Battle of New Orleans" for 1959 Billboard song of the year. Bobby Darin initially recorded the song as part of an upcoming album as he didn't believe it was suitable for a top single. Dick Clark agreed and advised him against it as it came from an opera and rock and roll fans would not take to it. Fortunately the record producers thought otherwise.
3. A 1964 song that became the title of a very popular movie, twenty six years later, achieved top place for three weeks on both the US and the UK charts. Roy Orbison was the only American recording artist to have a number one single on the UK charts in 1964 and he did it twice.

Answer: Oh! Pretty Woman

Roy Orbison was talking to his songwriting partner Bill Dees when Roy's wife Claudette said she was going shopping and he asked whether she needed money. Dees then stated that "a pretty woman never needs any money", and so the seed was sown to rescue Roy Orbison from a long awaited hit song. Roy later followed up with "Its Over".
4. In 1965 The Rolling Stones released the monster hit "(I can't get no) Satisfaction" and were soon hassled by fans across the pond for a great follow-up. So their "apt" reply rapidly topped the Billboard Charts for two weeks and the United Kingdom List for three weeks.

Answer: Get Off of My Cloud

Obviously annoyed by the unwanted attention they were receiving, within four months Keith and Mick had written a smash hit with a title that suited the situation, namely "Get Off of My Cloud". It proved to be the only consecutive number one for the Stones on either the US or UK charts.
5. In 1965 a young music composer, Sonny Bono, submitted a song to the head of Atco Records but it was primarily rejected as an A side when taken off the studio album "Look at Us". Some wheeling and dealing by Sonny saw his record eventually promoted and reach the top on Billboard for three weeks and in the UK for one.

Answer: I Got You Babe

Sonny took the record "I Got You Babe" to a top radio program director who agreed to play it once an hour for ownership rights and this led to the sixteenth biggest record on Billboard for 1965. Was written with opposite sentiment to Bob Dylan's "It Ain't Me Babe".
6. During the dominance that the Beatles had on the charts in the mid-sixties, Paul wrote a song dedicated to an aspiring author then working for a local daily newspaper. The song topped the Billboard 100 for two weeks and was top in the UK for one week.

Answer: Paperback Writer

Paul was asked by a close relative to steer away from love songs at that time. For reasons best known to himself he highlighted an employee of the band's regular daily newspaper "The Daily Mail", and "Paperback Writer" was written. The identity of the target is unknown.

The record's two week run on Billboard was interrupted for a week by Frank Sinatra's "Strangers in the Night". Footnote - The facts leading up to this song would be counteracted in 1976 when Paul was criticised by John for writing love songs because they were going out of popularity. Paul then composed "Silly Love Songs" which became the number one single in America for that year.
7. In mid-1976 a certain Bernie Taupin-Elton John composition needed a lady singer as accompaniment for Elton, but first choice Dusty Springfield was unavailable, so a relatively unknown performer was invited. This song topped Billboard for four weeks and ruled supreme in the UK for six.

Answer: Don't Go Breaking My Heart

With Kiki Dee, Elton John scored one of the biggest hits of his career with "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" and the song won the 1976 Ivor Novello Award for the Best Song Musically and Lyrically.
8. In 1978 The Bee Gees ran rampant across all the charts with the tracks released on the soundtrack of colossal movie "Saturday Night Fever". With three multi- week number one hits on The Billboard Hot 100 charts, one of these stayed top for eight weeks. Top in the UK Official Charts for two. Clue - Darkness Pyrexia.

Answer: Night Fever

"Night Fever", ironically, was displaced from top position on Billboard by BeeGees composition "If I Can't Have You" by Yvonne Elliman. It was in line to challenge Debbie Boone's "You Light up My Life" as the decade's longest running number one song. The other top hits from "Saturday Night Fever" on Billboard were "Stayin' Alive" (four weeks) and "How Deep is your Love" (three weeks).
9. In March 1979 Gloria Gaynor released a song that was later lauded as a symbol of female strength. The US Library of Congress deemed it culturally, historically and artistically significant. It had an interrupted three weeks on top of Billboard and a single week as number one in the UK.

Answer: I Will Survive

"I Will Survive" was originally the B side of a Righteous Brother's composition "Substitute" which reached only 107th place on the US charts. The song somehow managed to get enough airplay so as to be installed as a major hit and it also reached number one on the Canadian charts.
10. In 1980 Blondie presented the song ranked number one for that year and filled the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for six weeks while spending one week there in the UK. Lead singer Debbie Harry wrote the song in a matter of hours from the perspective of the main character of the movie that it was to become the theme of.

Answer: Call Me

"Call Me" was the theme song for the popular movie "American Gigolo" and was nominated for a Grammy for Best Duo or Group and Golden Globe Award for Best Song in 1981. It was a number one hit in Canada and was ranked number three record of the year in that country by RPM Magazine.
