Question 1 of 10
1. The Electric Light Orchestra was formed in Birmingham by members of the Move. The Move were very popular in the UK in the '60s, having had seven singles enter the Top 10 in England. Unfortunately, they were (and still are) virtually unknown in the US.

What song by The Move did Jeff Lynne re-record with ELO?
Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. Who, on this list, was NOT a founding member of the Electric Light Orchestra? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. The Electric Light Orchestra was dreamt up as a way to merge classical instruments with rock and roll. During its time, recordings saw the use of French horn, hunting horn, bassoon, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, violin and cello playing along with more modern rock and roll instruments.

Which of the following NEVER played cello on an ELO album?
Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. In 1974 ELO would release their first concept album, "Eldorado: A Symphony". We are carried through a dreamscape, visiting many lands, experiencing many wonderous sights and being treated to a myriad of musical styles.

The cover of this album depicted the scene from "The Wizard of Oz" where the Wicked Witch tries to remove the ruby slippers from Dorothy's feet, getting a nasty shock for her efforts. The still shot of that scene was reversed on its vertical axis for the album cover.

Who designed this album cover?
Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. ELO recorded many instrumental pieces, "Fire on High" being the most well-known. It was used for the background music for "CBS Sports Spectacular" as well as concert news updates for many radio stations.

Which of these is NOT an instrumental piece by ELO?
Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. The "Discovery" album's cover artwork is very Arabic in feel, depicting a young Arab staring into a glowing, three-dimensional construct of the famous ELO spaceship logo.

The Arabic feel continues on the back in what might be a seraglio chamber or just another room in a sultan's castle. At the back of the room is a large man in a turban weilding a nasty looking sword.

Who is this strapping, young model?
Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. Called ELO's creative masterpiece by Jeff Lynne, "Out of the Blue" was a double-LP. That means two vinyl discs with a groove on either side that reproduces the recorded music by use of a stylus riding in the groove, for those of you born into the CD era.

Anyway, the double-LP came packed with some neat swag. What was the coolest thing it came with?
Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. Bev Bevan was the drummer on all but one ELO album (the last one). After his tenure with the Electric Light Orchestra he went heavy metal.

Which of these bands did he play drums for?
Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. After "Balance of Power", Electric Light Orchestra was done...or so we thought. What band member won the right to form an offshoot band, called ELO Part II?
Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. After some solo work and playing as with the Traveling Wilburys, Jeff decided to do another ELO album. "Zoom" was, in truth, another solo album with only one ELO bandmate appearing on the album. The album was weak in sales in the US and a North American tour was cancelled.

Which ELO bandmate appeared on the track called "Alright"?
Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: Do Ya'

Jeff Lynne had originally turned down Roy Wood's first invitation to leave the Idle Race and join the Move. Only when Wood told Lynne of his idea for a rock band that would include classical instruments did Lynne agree to join the Move until the new project could be fully financed.

Roy Wood would leave after the first ELO album and form Wizzard with Hugh McDowell and Bill Hunt.
2. Who, on this list, was NOT a founding member of the Electric Light Orchestra?

Answer: Mike De Albuquerque

Mike De Albuquerque joined the band on bass for "ELO II".

Jeff Lynne and Roy Wood handled the duties on bass for the first album.

Answer: Jeff Lynne

The string section was in constant flux over the first four albums, but remained constant over the next four albums. This line up included Mik Kaminski on violin (bright blue, electric violin, to be more precise) and Hugh McDowell and Melvyn Gayle on cello.

After the "Discovery" album, the string section would be "released" by Lynne.

Answer: Sharon Osbourne

Sharon Osbourne was born Sharon Arden. Her first job was as secretary for her father's management business, Don Arden Management. Don Arden was one of ELO's managers.

Sharon would later take over the business and marry one of its biggest clients, Ozzy Osbourne. But this wouldn't be the only link between Ozzy and ELO. Read on.
5. ELO recorded many instrumental pieces, "Fire on High" being the most well-known. It was used for the background music for "CBS Sports Spectacular" as well as concert news updates for many radio stations. Which of these is NOT an instrumental piece by ELO?

Answer: Starlight

On "On the Third Day", ELO rearranged "In the Hall of the Mountain King" by Edvard Grieg. It was written for the Ibsen play Peer Gynt and is the final piece of the first movement.

Answer: Brad Garrett

Yep, it's actually Bobby Barone!

I wonder if he has to touch the sword to his chin before he lops off your head with it.

Answer: A put-it-together-yourself model of the ELO spaceship

The LP also included a poster of the band, with Jeff Lynne's image being the biggest. Bev Bevan and Richard Tandy's were below his and a little smaller, with the string section's being the smallest. There was obviously a heirarchy involved.

I actually bought three copies of this album to replace the damaged spaceship model. Little brothers...
8. Bev Bevan was the drummer on all but one ELO album (the last one). After his tenure with the Electric Light Orchestra he went heavy metal. Which of these bands did he play drums for?

Answer: Black Sabbath

The other link between ELO and Black Sabbath was Bev's tenure behind the set for the Ozzy-fronted heavy metal mainstay, in 1983 and into 1984.
9. After "Balance of Power", Electric Light Orchestra was done...or so we thought. What band member won the right to form an offshoot band, called ELO Part II?

Answer: Bev Bevan

Many former band members joined Bev, at one time or another, on studio tracks or in concert with ELO Part II. These included: Kelly Groucutt, Mik Kaminski and Hugh McDowell.

Louis Clark, ELO's string-arranger, played with the band as well.

Answer: Richard Tandy

"Zoom" also featured some guest musicians in the form of two former Beatles. George Harrison and Ringo Starr both appear on two tracks...but not the same two tracks.
