quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "And it seems to me you lived your life like a __________ in the wind".

Answer: Candle

One of Elton's all-time classics, it first appeared on the "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" album. It didn't reach the Top 10 in the UK when first released, but when re-released in the 80s as a live recording it did, and then of course there was the reworked version for Princess Diana.
2. "I'm still standing, better than I ever did, looking like a true __________, feeling like a little kid".

Answer: Survivor

From the song "I'm Still Standing", a top 10 hit in the UK in the early 80s, as was the album from which it came, "Too Low For Zero", which for many critics hailed the return of Elton after several less-than-average albums (in their eyes!).
3. "I can't light no more of your __________, all my pictures seem to fade to black and white".

Answer: Darkness

From "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me", which amazingly didn't reach the top 10 until the duet version with George Michael, which went to no. 1. Generally acknowledged to be one of his best ever songs, it is from the album "Caribou" and it is alleged that Elton didn't like the song when he recorded it and didn't want it included on the album!
4. "Oh it looks like Daniel, must be the __________ in my eyes".

Answer: Clouds

From the song "Daniel", which is on the "Don't Shoot Me I'm Only The Piano Player" album.
5. "Oh I saw you by the __________, ten of your tin soldiers in a row".

Answer: Wall

From the song "Nikita", which is on the "Ice On Fire" album. The album got its name from this song, which continues from the line above "with eyes that looked like ice on fire". The song (and video to match) is about a man singing about a woman called Nikita from the other side of the iron curtain that divided Europe during the Cold War.

However, one crucial mistake was made in writing this song - Nikita is a man's name!
6. "But giving in to the night time ain't no cure for the pain, you've gotta wade into the __________, you've gotta learn to live again".

Answer: Water

From "Healing Hands", the often-forgotten second half of Elton's first solo no.1 UK chart hit - the other and more famous half being "Sacrifice". Both songs come from the album "Sleeping With The Past" and both songs were actually released a year earlier separately but neither made the Top 40. On re-release as a double A-side with a lot of publicity and an announcement from Elton that all his royalties from the single would be donated to charity they reached the top of the charts.
7. "I sat on the roof and kicked off the moss, well a few of the verses, oh they got me quite cross, but the sun's been quite __________ while I wrote this song".

Answer: Kind

From his first UK chart hit, the famous "Your Song". The song comes from the album "Elton John", which was not as some think his first solo album - "Empty Sky" was released first.
8. "Lived here, he must have been a gardener that cared a lot, who weeded out the __________ and grew a good crop".

Answer: Tears

From the song "Empty Garden (Hey Hey Johnny)", a fabulous song that deserved better than its lowly chart position. It is from the "Jump Up" album of the early 80s and is his tribute song to John Lennon. Elton is the godfather of one of John Lennon's sons.

The word may be 'tares' which mens 'weeds' and would also fit. A bit hard to tell, listening to the song....
9. "And when she walked down the aisle everybody smiled at her innocence and __________".

Answer: Curls

From the song "Kiss The Bride", a top 40 hit for Elton in the early 80s and from the album "Too Low For Zero".
10. "Crazy water, takes my fishing boat on a __________ morning".

Answer: Monday

From the song "Crazy Water", which is on the album "Blue Moves", and a top 30 hit for Elton in the UK.
11. "You can't plant me in your __________, I'm going back to my plough".

Answer: Penthouse

From the song "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", which is from the album of the same name. The album was Elton's first double-LP, and Elton was reputedly nervous about releasing it because it was a double album and worried that it therefore wouldn't sell. It survives to this day as arguably his greatest-ever album.
12. "And I would have walked head-on into the deep end of the __________".

Answer: River

From "Someone Saved My Life Tonight", a song about his failed half-hearted attempt to commit suicide before he became famous. The song comes from the album "Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy", a superb album.
13. "I say it again, this is not my __________, I don't belong looking for a town of plenty".

Answer: City

From the song "Town Of Plenty" from the "Reg Strikes Back" album. The song did make the UK charts - just. It spent one week on chart, peaking at no. 74!
14. "There's a hungry __________ I can only hope's gonna eat me up inside".

Answer: Road

From "Runaway Train", a duet with Eric Clapton from the album "The One". The song made the top 40 back in 1992 in the UK and was the second single from the album, after the title track itself. The music was not just written by Elton on this particular song, Olle Romeo was credited as well.
15. "A couple of the sounds that I really like are the sounds of a ____________ and a motorbike".

Answer: Switchblade

From the song "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting", from the album "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road". A top 10 hit for Elton, this remains one of the fans' favourites.
16. "Wrap them up in your father's __________, and let them cry to heaven".

Answer: Flag

The much-overlooked "Cry To Heaven" is from the "Ice On Fire" album. Not a large hit for Elton, peaking in the 40s in the UK, which is something he has been quoted as being surprised about - and I am too.
17. "We're the victims of the __________ that kept us short of breath".

Answer: Heartbreak

From "Live Like Horses", released as a single with Luciano Pavarotti, which made the top 10 in the UK. Elton released a solo version on "The Big Picture". One of my favourite songs, I first heard this live when he was promoting his previous album release, "Made In England".

The song was originally written in those sessions, but Elton didn't want it to go on the album - I'm glad he released it eventually!
18. "I remember when rock was young, me and Suzie had so much fun, holding hands and skimming stones, had an old __________ Chevy and a place of my own".

Answer: Gold

From "Crocodile Rock", a top 10 hit in the UK and from the album "Don't Shoot Me I'm Only The Piano Player". One of Elton's most famous songs, it even featured in an episode of the comedy sitcom "The Vicar Of Dibley"!
19. "And I want you to be my __________, I want you to be my lover".

Answer: Acrobat

From the song "Little Jeannie", a top 40 hit for Elton in the UK and from the "21 At 33" album. The album was so-called because it was his 21st album and he was aged 33 at the time. Logical really! The lyrics for this song were written by Gary Osborne.
20. "To make a chain of __________ you need a matching pair".

Answer: Fools

From the song "Passengers", a top 10 hit for Elton in the UK and from the album "Breaking Hearts", which also included the well-known "Sad Songs (Say So Much)". The music for this song was written by Elton, Davey Johnstone and Phineas McHize.
21. "All the things I've said in songs, all the __________ prose you bought for me".

Answer: Purple

From the song "This Train Don't Stop Here Anymore", from the album "Songs From The West Coast". The album was considered to be a fantastic attempt to go back to Elton's roots in the early 70s - I agree. The songs were more simple than many of those on his later albums, but just as good.
22. "They must have loved each other once, before the __________ slipped away".

Answer: Magic

From the song "Nobody Wins", which just missed the top 40 in the UK and is from the album "The Fox". It was also the only chart single from the album. Elton played no part in writing this song - it was written by Jean-Paul Dreau and Gary Osborne.
23. "We'll serenade the world with a lullaby so the __________ will know us".

Answer: Angels

From the song "Are You Ready For Love?" - a song released originally in the 70s which failed to make the top 40, and never released on a studio album. Its second release, on the back of a remixed version by Fat Boy Slim, reached the top spot in the UK charts some 25-odd years later! Elton again had no hand in writing this song. It was written by Thom Bell, Leroy Bell and Casey James.
24. "It's __________ but it's cold as Christmas, in the middle of the year".

Answer: July

"Cold As Christmas (In The Middle Of The Year)" was the opening track of the "Too Low For Zero" album, released in the early 80s. It was one of four singles released from the album in the UK, along with "I'm Still Standing", "Kiss The Bride" and "I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues".
25. "The spotlight's hitting something that's been known to change the __________".

Answer: Weather

Quite a difficult one, I think, to finish even though the song is very well known. It is from "Bennie And The Jets", which in the UK was originally a B-side to "Candle In The Wind" before being released as a single in its own right later after it reached no.1 in the US. Also from the album "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road".
