That line is completely made up. The song was originally the B-side to "Take Me to the Pilot", but was preferred by DJs and got a lot more airplay. "Your Song" peaked at number eight in the US and number seven in Britain.

Bernie and Elton have both admitted in interviews that the song has no particular meaning. Some songs (i.e. "The Greatest Discovery") have clear-cut meanings (the birth of a new brother from the eyes of a young boy). Later on in their careers, Bernie would become fed up with critics always looking for hidden meanings in song lyrics, and would write harsh criticisms of his own ("All the Nasties") or purposefully meaningless lyrics ("Solar Prestige et Gammon")

Made in the Honky-Tonk style that the Rolling Stones were so popular for at that time (specifically 1969's "Honky Tonk Woman"), "No Shoestrings on Louise" is definitely one of the more 'unique' sounding pieces on the album (and personally, not one of my favorites).

A very haunting song that if taken literally shows the apprehension of a man nearing the end of his life. But who can really say for sure what Bernie was thinking when he wrote it: he's crafty that way.

For the record, Elton John has reached the age of sixty (earlier this year, 2007), and played a wonderful rendition of this song on his birthday concert! Bernie will not reach "sixty years of age" until 2010; we shall see how he deals with the situation.

The line 'Valerie's a Woman' does appear numerous times in the song, but it's not actually the title. 'Hienton' is mentioned once, but the phrase "First Episode at Hienton" does not actually appear in the song. "Strangers" is the title of another Elton song from the late 70s. The other two choices do not exist as Elton songs.

A non-descript but really very lovely song, it shows a softer side of both Elton's voice and Bernie's lyrics, as opposed to gritter numbers like "The Cage" and "Take Me to the Pilot". Really the song can be overlooked on this album; take the time to listen!

This is one of the rare instances (especially in his popular phase from 1970-1975) that Bernie Taupin was not responsible for a lyric. Bernie and Elton did take a break from each other in the late 70s / early 80s, and Elton's popularity took a dive. Coincidence? Well they reunited full-time with 1983's "Too Low for Zero", his highest selling album since 1975's "Rock of the Westies".

Wow what a great song and great line. One of the harshest sets of lyrics that Bernie would ever write, accompanied by a rocking piano and easily the most hardcore synthesizer solo ever recorded!

"Bad Side of the Moon" could actually be heard at many of Elton's live performances in this era (~1970). "Lady Samantha" and "Into the Old Man's Shoes" were bonus tracks on the "Empty Sky" and "Tumbleweed Connection" albums respectively. "Tartan-Coloured Lady" was a very early Elton John song and can be found on bootleg-demo recordings.

I guess this King's wife didn't merit a mention in the song, but his juggler, ostler, and jester did.
