This is the eleventh album by Elton John. The album is a compilation of his hit songs recorded from 1970 to 1974. The album topped the chart in the U.S and the U.K, staying at the top for ten weeks in the U.S and eleven weeks in the U.K.

Eight songs reached Top Ten in the Billboard Hot 100 Chart from 1971 to 1974: "Your Song" (number eight in 1971), "Daniel" (number two in 1973), "Honky Cat" (number eight in 1972), "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" (number two in 1973), "Rocket Man" (number two in 1973), "Bennie and the Jets" (number one in 1974), "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" (number two in 1974) and "Crocodile Rock" (number five in 1973).

"Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", "Bennie and the Jets" and "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting" were recorded on Elton John's seventh album, titled after the first song in the sequence, was released in October 1973. This album, which sold 20 million copies is widely regarded as Elton John's greatest work.
